Re Metal Black : I found that one not too difficult compared to Gaiden. I think Gaiden's unforgiving power up system is what does it.
At least you can control the power up rank increase. I think it is comparable to the memorization difficulty in Metal Black but not in memory rather in dodging. Metal Black does not offer much leeway in that you generally should be in a specific place for the most part.
Saturn Darius 2 to my knowledge does not have widescreen and when not zoomed in it's a bit pixelated. A small compromise given it was the best conversion until it found a home on Taito Memories Joukan 2. I'd go for that, if you have a PS2.

Huh, I guess it's only on the import ps2 release.. That's too bad
Rayforce (arcade-perfect with TATE) is on the same disc, just in case it's of any interest to you louis (I bought it for RF with Darius II as a bonus).
louisg wrote:Hmm how does the ps2 one handle the multiple screens?
You have the option to switch the screen ratio. With 4:3 mode, everything is on screen but squished horizontally, making everything look really stubby. In 8:3 mode, you have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen with all the original aspect ratio mostly in tact, much like in MAME. In other words, everything is kind of small and it tends to make things hard to concentrate on.
Like BIL, I bought this comp for RayForce as well, although Fighting Hawk was a nice, albeit easy "Toaplan" esque bonus.
I'm not too keen on Twin and Force, but I've never really understood why people think of the former's music as being immeasurably better than the latter's. It's the instrumentation that lets Force down, rather than the composition, and Twin is generally weak on both fronts. I do love Zone H's tune, though!
Ugh, I am still disappointed with the slow as shit G-Darius even with the PSX. And the gameplay footage on youtube is haunting me. I guess I have no choice bu to go with the PS2 version.

I cannot imagine how you'd be disappointed with the speed of the PS2 version so best of success. Taito Legends 2 is a pretty good set (RayStorm, Darius Gaiden, Cameltry, Syvalion, and the outstanding Elevator Action II(Returns)) otherwise and can be found for quite cheap; which is nice since at one point in time it looked as though it wasn't going to come out in North America at all.
PS2 G-Darius and Raystorm aren't emulations, according to the developers of Taito Legends 2.
Apparently Empire Interactive's forums aren't up anymore, but their post on the subject was copy/pasted here (with added inaccuracy + speculation from the poster about "PS1-level hardware," unfortunately). The relevant info is at "Taken from Empire Interactive forum" onward.

Eh... yeah me neither. I can only play them on my PS2?

So you have completed Mission Mode?
Just fired this puppy up again, and it's still awesome. But yeah, it's only the final stages (and bosses) that really have you playing for survival. Mission Mode is sweet though.

So then, according to you the best straight-to-console Darius is Darius Burst.
Darius Twin does get some credit for the 2 player mode not found in the 16-bit ports of Darius I & II. BGM composer "Wiz Master" is another name for Joutohei Nakayama (Norihiro Furukawa). The soundtrack isn't bad. This song below is a great rock remix of Darius II's "Cynthia". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAlkrM4Qu3s
The hardest Darius would have to be II- and unfairly so because if you die, YOU LOSE EVERYTHING. Boom. Now here's a mint condition, factory standard Silver Hawk with no upgrades. That won't do you any good if you're past the 4th zone. So, you'd better be trying for a 1LC. Darius I does have a more fair weapon system- if you reach laser or wave, you start at the lowest level of that tier if you die.
Darius Gaiden would be my favorite one out of the 2D members of the series. Taito did away with the unfair death penalty of D2- while you lose some power, you don't come back with just a peashooter. Losing one ship does NOT spell the end of your game.

Does Sagaia on Genesis have the same harsh penalty as Darius II?
I noticed too that I was able to take out bosses pretty well with the peashooter in Darius II.. it's not *totally* useless. Actually I don't know that the power-per-shot goes up all that much when powering up in these games, does it? It seems like the main advantage is the increased shot spread.
