Why don't you get hangovers when you're a kid?
Why don't you get hangovers when you're a kid?
I was in ponderland late last night, thinking about some stuff.
Why is it when you're 15, drinking booze and getting wasted, you never got hangovers? Kids that age just don't get them, at least I didn't. I'd usually be cool the next day.
I think I started getting hangovers around 17-ish, maybe a bit earlier.
Anyway, there must be some physiological explanation for it, just wondering if anyone knows what that is. I'm guessing it's because the body isn't familiar with alcohol or something so it breaks it down differently?

*ahem*
Kids DO get hangovers...
I got my first hangover at the tender Age of 13...
I was at a boarding school, and, well, things got a little bit overboard, so to say...
3 Kids.
1 Barrell of Beer (10 L...)
...
go figure... ^^
Oh sweet, sweet memories...

I drank half a bottle of rum one night when I was 13 and had a hangover for, like, two days - so they do happen. Mine was more nausea than headache so it might have something to do with fluid retention/thirst mechanism development - I know children/adolescents don't have fully developed thirst mechanisms, so mmmmmmmmmmmmmmaybe it's that? http://www.edulife.com.br/dados%5CArtig ... intake.pdf

One of the worst hangovers I've ever had was at about 16/17 and drinking cheap vodka, never again. Haven't touched vodka since except polish stuff.
I can get some nasty hangovers nowadays also mind, and I'm useless for the whole day. ughh
I can't escape the cold beer maidens grasp mind you..mmm, its the beer that does it for me too, I could drink a decent scotch or any spirit all night and be pretty OK next morning, but have about 6 beers on top also and I'm feeling rough.
Felt pretty rough the next day after R3PLAY but by midday I was ok again. When I have hangovers they last all day usually and sometimes into the next.
edit: not entirely related to topic, but that is my story. I used to love getting drunk when a teenager, it was new and exciting, plus you'd just try and drink whatever, as much as possible.

Re: Why don't you get hangovers when you're a kid?
Come to think of it, back when I was in high school some of us would get drunk in the morning before we went to class, and then try and act as though we were perfectly fine. I knew my limit, and was able to keep my cool but I had a few friends who got caught at one time or another. One guy we used to drink with even threw up all over his desk during our Biology Lab

Re: Why don't you get hangovers when you're a kid?
I read the explanation recently. Young men efficiently make the enzymes that break down the alcohol byproducts that are believed to cause hangovers. As you get older you loose some of that ability. However, as women age they gain this ability. Look out guys.
Also, eating food before drinking does not "soak" up the alcohol. It causes your stomach to close the sphincter to the small intestine, where absorption it much more rapid.

Re: Why don't you get hangovers when you're a kid?
I don't usually get hangovers .. it's probably a combination of drinking a lot of water and never getting to the point where I just black out or something.
Humans, think about what you have done
Re: Why don't you get hangovers when you're a kid?
I hate it when people say that, they are obviously not drinking like men.
but yeah, I get your point, best approach is to have a pint of water between each drink, it means you drink less booze overall and you're getting plenty of water also. Works well for me. Either that or a couple pints of water before bed and some nurofen or something.
I like drinking, but 99% of the time if I'm just having a few beers at home (which I often do, because its more fun than actually going outside with idiots to a club or something, I can just sit at home and listen to music and play cabs and shooties), I usually end up all ill feeling at like 11pm wondering why I bothered. meh booze, weed was much more fun.

I seldomly get hangovers. Drinking another beer the morning after the "partay" helps a lot.

Ah, that's interesting. Well, I don't think I'm alone remembering hangover free early youth, but I'm impressed some of you guys got twatted so bad at such an early age.antron wrote:I read the explanation recently. Before lager was cider. Hadn't developed a taste for beer so cider was the best we could hack at like, 14/15. We used to drink loads of it and it was strong, but I'd usually be okay the next day.
Nowadays a night of lager will just finish me for the next day, so I've taken to ale in the last couple of years as I find it less damaging. Hungoverness usually becomes tiredness by about 5pm the next evening, and I'm not usually 100% the day after. Even though I conk out after a night on the booze, it's never a good sleep and I hate that. I always pass out, then wake up really early (about 7am) and can't go back to sleep. I need to actually get up, absolutely shattered, and do something for a bit before I go back to sleep. It's weird but its the only way it works.
In school we didn't do alcohol too often, we were stoners most of the time, getting un-suppressible giggles at the back of the strictest class imaginable.

If you got caught drunk in our school I think that was it, expelled. Didn't stop us getting stoned every lunchtime mind. I did shrooms once in a lunchbreak having no idea of the effects really and then had to go to a science lesson after. tripping balls. People were asking me why I was turning slightly purple
Cider is a good entry drink, cheap and quite tasty / easy to drink, and a litre bottle of something can get you on your way for sure.
Olde english, merrydown and dry blackthorn were always a good buy.

I had my first hangover when I was 15. That being said, in hindsight, it wasn't that much of a hangover. It's been years since I had REALLY bad one, though. Now I know when I should by all means drink some water. Ibuprofen, vitamin C, calcium and other stuff come in handy too.
And...? Did they ask you what's wrong with you as well? You wouldn't lie to your parents on 'shrooms, would you?kernow wrote:Yeah definitely a super paranoid moment. Had to go home and eat dinner with the folks after also![]()

I only get hangovers from liquor. I can drink beer till the cows come home.
It's weird too; when I do get hangovers, I'm fine when I wake up, but by mid/late afternoon it hits me.

Exact opposite for me. I got hangovers like crazy when i was a teenager. They've only started to lighten up now and that's just because I do a better job managing my intake. Once you learn how drunk you can get without being dead the next morning life is a breeze.

Shrooms at school?!
That is sounds absolutely frightful.
I was hungover most of today. A quick nap revitalized me.
The back end from ecstasy is the worst hangover I've had. My joints ached for weeks.
(Best to roll only once a year or so, not 3 weekends straight.)

Re: Why don't you get hangovers when you're a kid?
Yeah I definitely have a super young hangover memory. I was probably 15 or so and my dad apparently suspected what was up.
He got me out of bed at the crack of dawn the next day, middle of summer. He took me to his work and equipped me with a post-hole digger so I could dig holes for a new fence all day in full-on hot weather.
But he never said a word.

Man, I got terrible hangovers when I was a kid. I also puked up buckets. One of the few reasons I don't drink at all anymore.

Sidenote: Beer is a diuretic. Dehydration is one of the causes of a hangover so drink plenty of water if you're going on a binge. Just sayin'. Easy for me to say though, since I don't drink any alcohol at all. Never had a hangover my entire life.

This is a myth. There were some good discussions about this on BBC Radio 4 this year (don't know if the links will work worldwide): http://www.google.com/m/search?client=m ... 010+radio4beyonder wrote:Sidenote: Beer is a diuretic. It's the congeners, sugar and alcohol combination that your body is trying to combat, along with the loss of salts and vitamins from so much liquid passing through you that gives a hangover. Stick to clear spirits with mixers free of sugar

Or drink less.
