An American Fighting stick for Mortal Kombat

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

I was looking through Kotaku today when I came upon this article. Apparently, Japanese style arcade sticks are not good for western fighting games. This thing is pretty ugly...

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

I never understood the funky button layout MK used. If you're a big fan I suppose that stick would be pretty cool, but not very useful for any other game.

I really dig the color scheme! Also the surface from at least that angle makes it look like glass... very classy! The lay out is a bit funky, just like the actual arcade cabs!

I don't know, I think it looks fine. Takes me back to the arcade days of my youth, wasting tons of quarters trying to pull off fatalities. I'd probably get one for PC if it came out.

That control layout still looks like it was designed by someone who doesn't even know what a hand looks like.

Yeah, since Mortal Kombat strives to be different the input commands for moves are all weird like (forward, forward, back, low kick, etc). HAPP American made sticks are a hell of a lot tighter and definitely work better for those type of commands, compared to the Japanese sticks that work well with "normal" fighting game commands (quarter circles, half circles, etc)

If you're talking about the stick itself, the 360 one should work fine on a PC.

I meant the game in general. Pretty sure it was announced for PC, PS3, and 360 at some point but I can't verify that anywhere.

And yeah. Mortal Kombat in the arcades I always hated, personally. The home ports were laggy as hell, but the button setup for the arcade I never liked. Me and MK have a love/hate relationship.

MK was never a truly good series... it had excellent graphics and shock value, and that's it.

Aye, yeah...I mean, compared to other good fighters, the series is stiff and broken, yeah, but I still have a lot of fun with MK II and III/Ultimate/Trilogy for casual playing.

The figure it comes with is nice.

I might as well add that the stick is hilarious and can't even be used for shmups. I don't even remember MK2 cabs being like that, they were 6 button.

for those prices I recommend finding an orginal mkII cab and put your weed, I mean ps3 or xbox in there.
Thing is, that those american bat sticks have a very long throw and you need to put quite some power to move them. doing Raiden´s superman flying move would probably let the controller fly to the kitchen.
Exegerating a bit here
nice for fans.
mk is not great, yet on competitive level it is great even though unfair and buggy and unbalanced as hell. it´s fun. (talking anout mkII)
but, ps, xbox and snes controllers are perfect for this game!
R is block and the four buttons for kicks and puches are all there on the front of the controller.
(let´s not go into the ridiculous run button since mk3)

You laugh but in the days of killercabs someone bought a cab which was privately owned and they found a bag of weed in the coinbox which they claimed they smoked and was some great shit too. The most I ever found was about a 10GBP in loose change. There have been a few guys who bought arcade machines and found more change in the bottom than what they paid for the cabinet in the first place. You dont tend to hear these stories much at Arcadeotaku.com as most people have imported these and are bought domestically off collectors who imported them for themselves.

The cabs you played it on obviously were just conversions of some kind then. That layout is the official arcade MK layout.

Way back when Tekken 4 was relatively new, the community college I was attending at the time got one... installed into a cab that had clearly been serving as a Mortal Kombat. The button layout hadn't been changed at all from the MK layout, aside from the middle position having been blanked.

No one had hands large enough to play it properly.

That's a sweet looking box... I'm just curious as to where you can buy it, and how much will it cost?

Allow me to correct myself: Mortal Kombat had excellent graphics, shock value, AND a good story with interesting characters. So the movie and the comics were built upon solid ground. Street Fighter, on the other hand, didn't have much of a plot and the characters were not well defined.

Indeed, it certainly is funky as hell. I remember hating it as a chillun.

My favorite part about this stick is how it's being billed:
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/Product ... t_id=89095

# Features the classic Mortal Kombat ergonomic button layout to best optimize game play.

Clear aims at arcade nostalgia in the veteran, diehard MK fans - despite Mortal Kombat not having a major arcade release since MK4 in 1997, IIRC - this is still a dopey layout that is anything BUT ergonomic. But like drauch said, it's a part of MK making an effort to be a unique snowflake among other fighters. In this instance, uncommonly hand-wracking as opposed to typically comfortable.

No such thing.

Apparently they are making the next one for tournament-level, though. Maybe we'll all want sticks for it.

Seeing as it took Capcom years before they put out a truly tournament level fighter, and they were trying, somehow I doubt "Team make MK a tournament level fighter" will succeed.

You're retarded, just FYI.

Or ignore it, like everyone will once they realize it's just another chronicle in a fighting game series that was founded on gimmicks and will die on them, as well.

Reguardless of your opinion some people will play the game enjoy it. I for one will buy the game, and more than likely enjoy it.

American style sticks are generally crap because the parts aren't built for the same quality or purpose. In other words that MK stick is solely good for MK and nothing else. A 6 button or 8 Button stick is good for anything. Personally i'm fine with the bat top stick, but if it's a Happ stick it won't be nearly as precise.

Yeah I'm more partial to the actual "stick" or "teardrop" than the "lollipop" knob. Either way it's fine - the button layout is suspect but as in most games, if needed, you could reconfigure the buttons to fit preferred style. I'd like to see the price tag on it.

The game bindings aren't going to change anything, the buttons on the stick itself are fixed into the Mortal Kombat specific cross. Or star, if you like. Good American imagery there.
