Video Game Podcasts
All right. I didn't see any topics about this specifically, but if there is one already, just redirect me.
I've listened to giantbomb, podcast198x, talkradar, and a few others that have escaped my mind for the moment.
What videogame podcasts do you guys listen to, like, etc?

Re: Video Game Podcasts
I've actually just started listening to a bunch of these, since I want something to listen to while I do grindy things in DQ9, and didn't feel like listening to an audiobook. I've been listening to a lot Retronauts, which is interesting, but unfortunately is filled with people with infuriating ideas of how to play "retro" games; they don't understand that games are fun when played for score, and consider credit-feeding a game to be "beating it." When someone suggested that they limit themselves to one credit at a time, they all laughed off the suggestion as a "self-imposed limitation." Anyway, they've got some good interviews. The one with the Tengen crowd is very cool. I also listened to some of the other 1up podcasts, they're generally not bad. I listened to the IGN podcasts as well; again, not bad, but not too great. I do enjoy the IGN UK podcast quite a bit. I checked out a few that I didn't like much at all, but I won't bother mentioning them.
Re: Video Game Podcasts
Liked that one too but, yeah, Retronauts hosts are terrible if the topic is anything other than Nintendo or RPGs.The one with the Tengen crowd is very cool.
Re: Video Game Podcasts
talk radar is great because the hosts are smart and have great chemistry
rebel_fm is interesting in that its infuriating listening to people who barely understand games talk about their jobs reviewing games
retronauts, once my least favorite, has become the most listenable, with ray keeping most episodes afloat with progressive ideas and a classic understanding

Re: Video Game Podcasts
Awesome thanks for the recommendations guys, and rob, thanks for the links. I'll be sure to check these out.
As of right now, I'd have to say that 198x is my favorite one so far. I'm glad to see someone else actually listens to it. It seems to have gone under the radar, but it's actually really good, imo.

Re: Video Game Podcasts
Drunken Gamers Radio - More funny bar conversation than game reviews but they know what they're talking about.
198x - They'll think of shit nobody else does. Brings many new viewpoints to the table. And *gasp* they're actually good at games even when they say they aren't.
Gamers With Jobs - Generally PC players but they have great topical discussions.
Mobcast - Different game industry people talk about five gaming topics. Dan Shu is on a lot.
Giant Bombcast - The best way to get the mainstream gaming news.
Fast Karate for the Gentleman - It's randomly either about gaming or anime and it has the least structure on earth, but if they talk about something you're experienced with, it's one of the funniest things ever. If you had to go to old episodes, find the ones that were on when last season of 24 was running. That shit is classic!
A Life Well Wasted - Topical discussions and interviews. The highest quality podcast out there. The segments are cut up and mixed to original music. Because of the quality, new episodes are scarce.
The Amplfied Gamers - They pay attention to the music when they review the game and play clips of stuff throughout the show.
---------
Video, Video Game Podcasts
G4TV.com Web Shows - It forces 4 shows on one feed, but Feedback and Sessler's Soapbox are good. It's like G4 without the Comcast meddling. No idea why Feedback needs to be a video podcast tho.
GameTrailers.com - Video Reviews
GameTrailers.com - Video Previews
X-Play's Daily Video Podcast
---------
And for podcast listening stuff, I use DoggCatcher for Android. It's like, holy shit the best ever when you figure out how to use it.

Because of your suggestions, I checked out podcast 198x, I listened to the E3 episode. It's like stepping into bizarro world; they have almost completely opposite views to those of most games journalists. In many cases that's refreshing, but in other cases, it's just baffling. You care that much about video games, but you haven't bought a Nintendo product in 10 years? You thought this E3 was mediocre? You don't think the 3DS would sell if it was priced over $200? I'm not trying to hate on them, overall a good listen, but very strange. Also, do those guys hang out on shmups forum? They mentioned the site by name, and even mentioned DOJ at one point.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread...
I don't know why it took me so long to check out talkradar, but I've been listening to it for the past two weeks, and it blows every other videogames podcast out of the water. Please, if you listen to podcasts, listen to this one, it's awesome. Even better, they discuss rob's shenmue xoxak review in episode 68, which is all about the Dreamcast.

Re: Video Game Podcasts
Yeah, I heard about that. I hate Talk Radar, though.
I really like the ultra nerdy shows that either cover something fairly obscure or go into detail.

Re: Video Game Podcasts
Yeah, but there's something to be said for entertainment too. I love those types of podcasts too, but they get sort of hard to listen to in large doses, at least for me.
Re: Video Game Podcasts
I thought I'd plug the racketboy.com podcast here, which I host.
We just put up our newest episode (#15) focusing on indie shmups, which I think folks around here will enjoy.
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2010/08/ ... hmups.html
We're also holding a contest this month where you can win one of the three Gundemonium games - details are in the final interview.
Past shows are here: http://www.racketboy.com/category/retro/podcast
I'd appreciate any feedback you may want to leave!

Re: Video Game Podcasts
Just put up another show, this time featuring interviews with the creators of the Strike series: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/together ... eries.html
I'll be doing the show live later this month at the TooManyGames con outside of Reading, PA. Any shmups forum members plan to attend?

although we're not really similar, talkradar was very inspirational for sean and i in starting 198x out
ps, we both guested several times on their recent pax show/panel!
pps, we drank with the crew till 5am ... and they're just as cool as you'd imagine them to be. much, much love to them.
Re: Video Game Podcasts
Yeah, I heard you on that podcast, It was cool hearing someone from here on the cast.
Nice podcast, dsheinem, I listened to episode 15, very informative. I love developer interviews on podcasts. Very nice radio voice, I get a laid back NPR vibe
Anyone else bummed about retronauts ending?

Re: Video Game Podcasts
Thanks, linko. An NPR vibe is indeed the ultimate goal of the show, so I appreciate the compliment. If you get a chance to listen to other episodes I think you'll find much the same thing, even if I don't always talk to developers. Thanks again for listeninglinko9 wrote:

I should thank you guys for turning me on to talk radar as well. I think you mentioned talk radar in the first 198x podcast. I religiously listen to them now. When I heard EDF get mentioned in the pax podcast I had a feeling it was you guys but I wasn't sure until you said your handle. Sounded like you guys had a blast at PAX and hanging out with the talk radar crew. I might have to make the trip out there next year.
Also, really digging the new 198x site design.
EDIT:
Podcasts I listen to:
198x
Talk Radar
Bombcast
I'm going to try and attend too many games. At least that's the plan ATM.dsheinem wrote:Just put up another show, this time featuring interviews with the creators of the Strike series: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/together ... eries.html

Just listened to the indie shmups podcast. Some good interviews there. It's been a few years since I looked at any indie shmup. I'll have to check some of them out.dsheinem wrote:Thanks, linko. Listening to the too many games podcast now. I'm also checking out the racketboy site. Some excellent articles and discussion there. Getting some ideas of what games I should look out for at too many games.
Re: Video Game Podcasts
Out of the Game - actually funny and interesting.
Re: Video Game Podcasts
I'm not familiar with his writing, but he hasn't said anything to hate. Least entertaining guy on the show.
Re: Video Game Podcasts
Nice to see that 198x is still around.

Oh cool THX for the heads up on the new 198x podcast. I was starting to think the progect had died off. One of the best shows going atm is 198x
BTW does anyone know of any other recent podcasts that go into detail about shmups and arcade games?

@ kid aphex, great show I was gonna comment on your site but it wont let me, what do I need to be a member of to post comments?
One intresting aspect you talked about was how Cave are currently testing the waters, in a bid to replace its shrinking highly priced PCB market with a console fanbase willing to pay top dollar for console ports.
Still I wonder if Cave would ever pull the same kind of shit that the makers of Railworks 2 do for their DLC http://store.steampowered.com/sub/6839/
Shit like that proves that fans are totally insane

i think this will all eventually end with gamers directly funding the development of games they want to see.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:@ kid aphex, great show I was gonna comment on your site but it wont let me, what do I need to be a member of to post comments?

in turn, they'll get access to betas, and some degree of influence over the final product.
change like that would first develop on the fringe of the hobby ... and this genre is about as fringe as you can get.
it makes it a very interesting space to watch for developments of new models of economy.

I like what you guys said about the PS3.
Although, sometimes I feel (disc) games take a second seat to the rest of it's amenities.
This forum is scary. I'm afraid to post anything outside the drunk thread.
Your b/w podcast covers look cool.
Don't have too much more to add.
