Just bought the game.
25 titles on a single DVD. WOW
And many of them are really quite good.
BAD NEWS:
(1) No Tate Mode for all games.
(5) 5 games are initially locked and cannot be access.
And these include
"Bobble Bobble" and "Kiki KaiKai"...
The TWO games which drive me to my these collection...
I have to check and see if it save high scores.
Really want to know how to unlock these games...

Hmm, are any of the shmups among the "locked" games? How are the graphics in general, are they mostly faithful to the originals or is there a big resolution difference or the like for some of them?
I'd guess that it just takes a certain amount of playtime hours to unlock them, but I suppose time will tell.

NCS just posted a bunch of what are probably PR screenshots, but all of the non-vert ones appear to be in their proper resolutions. I now go from being 100% sure that these games'll be high-res/interlaced/otherwise blah-looking to only 99% sure.

Anyone have definitive word? Whatever the case, I don't think I can resist picking this up when I'm in Japan in september. -_-;

Those look like MAME screengrabs to me. There was an article on the package on GAME Watch recently that included a bunch of screenshots full of filtered blurry messes.

This is really harsh. Still doesn't affect a large number of the games in this collection, but all of the verticle shmups might as well just be taken off the set.SAM wrote:J

Now to hold out until next month when the set with G-Darius comes out.

Of the 5 locked games, 3 of them are shumups.BulletMagnet wrote:Hmm, are any of the shmups among the "locked" games? How are the graphics in general, are they mostly faithful to the originals or is there a big resolution difference or the like for some of them?

I'm not too thrilled with the idea of 5 of the games being locked. Hopefully that TMG Akkanvader pic is a bit compromised from poor JPEG quality and not fake low-res. I'm a bit worried about the Tate games since they've been Yokofied.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I just want to know WHEN the hell this compilation will be coming out in the US, and WHAT games will be on it.
Empire Interactive needs to get their act together; honestly, they haven't even gotten their US website up yet, and they expect us to believe that this collection is coming out over here this year.
As soon as I get the "all-clear" phone call about the drug test I did for my new job, I'm calling their US office, and, as politely as I can, try to get to the bottom of this.

There are plenty of STV Saturn shmups and Saturn hori's, some of which will be on this compilation, which do not even warrant turning one's TV on it's side, because they are already full-screen. And as far as Galactic Attack goes, that game plays just fine, IMO, in non-tate.

yeah, but there is a difference between "just fine" and "perfect." rotated layer section is the most (pain in my ass at full rank).
the lack if tate is quite a blow for me. i still want the game (after all the bulk of the games weren't vert to begin with), but that is still a missed opportunity at awesomeness.

I have no sig whatsoever.

If you got a large enough TV, playing those vertical oration game should not be a problem.
As far as "KiKiKaiKai", "Space Invader" & "Lunar Rescue" in concern, the resolution output by the PS2 is high enough handle them without any distorting in the picture. Use of high quality vedio input format, like S-Vedio, Component does help.
For the horizontal shumps, like "Darius Gaiden", "Black Metal" and others got no problem.
Not to mension, the disc also includes some good non-shumup like "Bouble Bouble", "Elevator Actions", etc.
For the price of $39 (at local game store), I would say it would be a great deal. Unless you are those <Fill in the Blank yourself> who use to play games on MAME.

Does anyone know if Taito are to port the PS or the original arcade version ?CMoon wrote: Now to hold out until next month when the set with G-Darius comes out.
- PS version = massive slowdowns (unless optimized), but boss mode and many difficulty modes.
- arcade version = full speed (therefore insanely hard game).
I can think of better examples of games with broken yoko modes, ones that don't require you to reword someone elses post. Note, this is not a fault with vertical games being put into yoko, but a fault with the implementation in the game in question. PSX Donpachi. Gameplay totally ruined.Bar81 wrote:Post corrected.dave4shmups wrote: And as far as Rayforce/Layer Section goes, that game plays completely differently in non-tate and is inferior to the properly oriented version.

I'm guessing you haven't played the arcade one recently - the slowdown is almost as bad as on the PSX, even on the revised board which removed some. It's not surprising, as the hardware in question is modified PSX hardware.Lyle wrote:- arcade version = full speed (therefore insanely hard game).CMoon wrote: Now to hold out until next month when the set with G-Darius comes out.

There also are a LOT of us who DO, and unlike screen resolution, digital sound and even saving a high score, having a good tate option can drastically affect gameplay; especially when so many games have pretty trashy yoko options with cropped screens, forced wobble mode, etc. Most of the time, you lost SOMETHING when you play a vert in yoko, but of course there are exceptions (as there are to everything).bloodflowers wrote:wtf?CMoon wrote: This is really harsh. Really, it isn't that hard to throw a cheap tv on its side permanently somewhere in your den--and it makes a great conversation piece.
Nope, never played the arcade of G-Darius. I just assumed that it ran at normal speed instead of constant slowdown. I am having less and less of a reason to buy either of these packs...I'm guessing you haven't played the arcade one recently - the slowdown is almost as bad as on the PSX, even on the revised board which removed some. There's an easy reason to buy them too. There are a few games here which have never been ported, Gridseeker for example, and stuff like Gun Frontier and Metal Black will very likely be at least as good as the Saturn revs. Also, I like Rastan

I agree with everything you posted (I too like Rastan) except for this. Gun Frontier will be killed by a lack of tate; which is unfortunate, because not many are willing to pay the $60 or so that the saturn version commands.bloodflowers wrote:and stuff like Gun Frontier will very likely be at least as good as the Saturn revs.

Given the accuracy of the Saturn ports these new ones will actually be somewhat worse, given that they apparently (I gather) run in interlaced/high-res modes. Yeah, I know not everyone cares, but if you do...bloodflowers wrote:stuff like Gun Frontier and Metal Black will very likely be at least as good as the Saturn revs.
