I tried to explain what Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu was to a friend of mine.

Me: "So, there are these giant cyborgs called Element Dolls. They used to be heroes, but humanity feared their power and enslaved them on the moon. However, they got infected by a computer virus, broke free of their slavery and then went on a destructive rampage to take revenge on mankind."

She: "Oh, that sounds pretty interesting."

Me: "Yeah, here's the first stage boss. *I draw a rough mock up of A.I crushing the ship in her hand*"

She: "Oh, I was wondering why you said the giant cyborgs were cute. Are they all girls? ...This is a man's game, isn't it?"

I lol'd.

Haven't quite figured that one out yet...) and it gets annoying that every time I talk about a shmup, I end up explaining waht they are with "Those games with the little space ship shooting aliens and stuff. Games like Galaga, Gyruss, Gradius, or R-Type". Kinda pisses me off that they all think I'm crazy cause I don't give a care about the newest FPSs...

You can only image what people here Kansas think about shmups. I'm so alone down here.
Ironic most of my friends are aware of Touhou as well.

And for the record its not any better here in Alabama, but peoples faces are pretty funny to look at when you say shmup or shoot em up. All of the people into shmups are in montgomery -_- why do I have to be 110 miles away???

In high school I was looking at screenshots of Hibachi (DDP ver.), and some guy behind me claimed he could get to that point. But I'm sure, judging by how he sounded, he was being a falsificare.

Similar deal when I was talking about my experience at Nickel City with some classmates and brought up Giga Wing. One classmate claimed he enjoyed that game. I tried to ask him if he really knew what that game was, but insisted he did without going into detail.

Yeah, people who do that sort of bullshitting can go die.

Thankfully in my later years of college things changed; I got to meet people who played shmups (but didn't restrict themselves to cute girl doujinshmups), and I currently semi-regularly hang out with one such player. I feel like I have actual gamer friends now :D

"Wow. That's a lot of purple" (as I was playing the Mushi Arrange final boss)
"No, it's going to be too hard" - Most responses to, "Do you want to give it a try?"

I also have a friend who calls a game like Gradius, Progear, and Deathsmiles a "shmright" since you're shooting right instead of up.

Well, that actually makes a lot of sense. But wouldn't Deathsmiles be a "shmanydirection"?
