"Get a life" or "ohh look your good at these games you must have a very sad life" Comments like these really get my back up especially if its comming from a fellow gamer moreso comming from MMO / RPG nuts :?

Dunno how / when not cruising through new games as fast as possible (in easy mode) became the norm, skipping as much content as possible or even not finishing the game just so gamers can quickly move on to the next overly hyped must play game. Whats wrong with putting a shitload of hours into mastering a single game or trying to 100% all its content.

Maybe its because many of us come from an older gaming generation, where when we was kids in the 8 / 16bit days, games cost about the same as they do today and were very expensive, so if we bought a game we damn well made sure we got our moneys worth out of it. Unlike the current generation where its possible to game for free or with very little money and gamers have so many games they feel they must play otherwise the world will end of some shit.

Fuck that, I'm 16 and I can say that modern games are not quite as great or skill-focused as arcade titles. Nothing to do with age, just a changing zeitgeist that apparently wants fun served on a silver platter.

There's always exceptions to the rule, mate. The rest of the people in your generation don't feel the same way as you unfortunately. Expectations are different now.

Well, after the ear chomping episode, she got a good spanking, so that was easy to cope with. :-P On a serious note: Actually I look at such "incidents" as a good way to train my concentration. I actually managed to keep my concentration more often than not when she was standing next to me and was talking to me. I just made an arrangement with her: I promise not to get angry when I am playing, and she promised not to get angry when I "ignore" her when I am "in the zone". Actually, that works quite well. And about the getting offended part: Yeah, it still happens sometimes that I loose my nerves, especially if I'm in a very demanding part of the game, but hey... Come to think of it: It really is just a game... Putting the game above human relationships... Hmm... Well... Sometimes I have to tell myself to get my priorities right...

And yeah, @Esp Ra.De.... I swallowed my pride and switched to playing the mall as the second stage, playing with yusuke. And even then, the endboss is still a mean mothereffer, but I finally managed to get to stage 3 (bay area) on one life, and from there on, defeat the "helicopter-thingy" on 1 credit - barely. I have to admit, this order of the levels is considerabely easier than vice-versa.

And to get BTT:
One of my friends comments, as he saw me playing Espgaluda II on the iPad:
"Aren't you affraid of an epileptic seizure?"

... he should come and see Mushi Ultra... hehehe...

Next time she does it - throw her down in front of the couch or seat you are playing on, say "i want you right now" and have your way with her. Trust me she'll love it ;) they just want the attention.

Decided to introduce my new g/f to my gaming habits last night. I brought over RFA and played RFJ and she just kinda flipped out the whole time. Best part was when I said I hadn't played in MONTHS, and then proceeded to up my high score from 44M to 50M. She asked me how I could see the bullets right before RB1 started... lost my last two lives within a few seconds of the beginning of the stage and laughed and said, "I apparently can't." Damn her tiny 13" TV. =(

I can't wait to show her Futari or something. Hopefully I can get her to at least give the Novice modes a try!
<trap15> I only pick high quality games
<trap15> I'm just pulling shit out of my ass tbh

Hey now, you know THAT'S not entirely true

Though I'm curious what you mentioned to your English teacher to make him say that though

Anyways, most of my non-shmup playing friends don't really have much negative to say about the games, but it's always kinda funny to watch them with their mouths open in awe as I 1CC......stage 1 of Futari Black Label :P

Okay, all of my friends except, like, 2

In regards to the English teacher: Not specifically shmup related, but when asked why I was doing a report about video games and violence among children I said "videogames are my life" or something like that, to which she said the aforementioned quote. I killed her.

I have a specific collection of games through Lagless MAME on my USB that I play at school sometimes, and besides all the aforementioned "How do you dodge that shit man, you're really awesome" kind of quotes, I was told by one Halo:Reach fanboy that I should be a pilot.
Fortunately shmups are the underdog genre here, everyone knows of them even though not by genre name because there's Raiden II and Raiden Fighters(1,2&JET) arcade machines all over the town. So I get generally positive comments. We recently got After Burner Climax as an arcade machine as well, though the big whoop over that is the moving chair and VERY FAST gameplay.
And some time ago I got back in contact with one of my oldest (female) friends from primary school years, and when I showed her the games I played she had a memory trip of an old Playstation game she used to play as a child, turned out it was RayStorm. "Oh my GOD, I LOVE these games, like the one with the red ship that shoots the big purple laser that goes spastic and hits everything!" she said. :D

Some weeks ago, my girlfriend (29) asked me (32):
"Are you playing Sailor Moon again?" ...

I was playing Futari... not some Sailor Moon-ish game.. of course! ;o)

"What, you have to dodge EVERY bullet?" - Friend watching me play Radiant Silvergun.

Mind you I've heard shump fanatics slagging off other genres too, each to their own I say.

"Oh like Ikaruga?"

This one always rubs me the wrong way. Not just because of my public and well known hatred of that game's image in the west, but because they then comment on why i'm dodging the bullets, or why i'm collecting gems or why i restart after losing a credit...

From the fighting game fanbase: "durrrr shmups are so dull it's 100% memorization, with fighting games it's a different game every time"

From proficient players of other genres in general: "holy shit these games are for insane people *turns around and whoops ass at Call of Legends: Craft Fighter Hero*"

I have to agree with this the one that says this "durrrr shmups are so dull it's 100% memorization" is always a damn fighter "fan"

A comment taken from a Gundemonium Recollection ps3 trailer, ive no idea if hes joking or serious as I can never tell with these sort of comments (sigh)
WARNING: DO NOT CHECK THIS GAME OUT! IT'S TRASH! It's the worst games ever made. It is 100% impossible to complete especially the 1st Stage due to the fact that the enemies shoot everywhere. This is not right and it's against the law for a developer to make crappy games like that. No one is going to buy this game, ever. SOE has confirmed to recall this game tomorrow

- A friend of mine when I said that I bought Xbox 360 for playing 2D shmups mainly:
"Are you serious? You bought Xbox360 for this kind of games? Geez!"
Well, exCUUUUUUUUUUSE MEEEEEEEEEEE for not buying it because of HALO!
- Most common quotes I hear from friends of mine as a joke:
"These games cause you epilepsy easily." (they refer to bullet hell shooters like Touhou since they know how much I like Touhou)
"You must be japanese in order to finish them."
- A quote from a friend of mine after showing me Mushihime-sama final boss video:
"I dare you playing this unbelievably difficult game". Well, I did but I dropped it after a few minutes since the PS2 port was a huge disappointment. Good thing that Mushihime-sama Futari is much better.
- Most common quotes from non-shmuppers after seeing Touhou:
"They're no way you can avoid all these bullets!". Well, there is. I explain them that these kind of games make you think that it's unthinkable to avoid them but when you learn the patterns it will be much reasonable. And if they're new at this kind of games there's always the easy mode for practising. Good thing that these points always work. :)
- A friend of mine (which he mainly plays strategies and mmorpg but he loves shmups since they are simple to learn and very entertaining and nostalgic) when he want from me to recommend him some shmups:
"Can you recommend me some games with planes, space ships or flying people (he refers to games like Touhou)?"
