1001 Games to Play Before You Die (book)

Post by Cthulhu »

I was at the bookstore the other day and saw this one on a shelf. It's a very hefty tome that actually offers at least a few paragraphs on 1001 games. It has a single color photograph for most of them as well (but not all). The book has a bent towards the 80s and on, with only a handful of games from the 70s (which is 100% fine with me, as I actually am not a fan of the 70s intensive books that have come out previously).

As you'd expect, the older titles are mostly classics that most people will agree on but as you get more towards recent stuff there's some "no way, why is that in here?" stuff. One newer game I was very happy to see them list - Bayonetta. :D

I think it was $35 or so. Well worth picking up imho. My fiance and I are (when time permits) going to make a spreadsheet of everything I've played out of the book and see what percentage I've got covered.

Bayonetta is a disappointment from the makers of DMC. Even for the fact that DMC was an ok series which isn't saying much.

I love how you see it that way and I see it as a disappointment from the makers of God Hand.

Though to be fair it wasn't really a bad game. I enjoyed my play through. I think i was just expecting a little more.

Too long. Combos felt a bit odd. Difficulty was up and down throughout the game.

Like i said it's not a bad game, just it felt like it could have been better given the team behind it.

Yeah, I saw that book too the other day.
From a brief look, I noticed it had quite a few shooters too, but not all the ones I would want.

More questions:

What's the first selection? What's the last selection? Where amongst these is Ikaruga?

If it includes several shooters but not Ikaruga, where can I buy it?

Nothing.... at all.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Both Ikaruga & Radinat Silvergun were in the list (Can't remember their exact number selection though)

Axelay, DoDonPachi, R-Type 1 were in the list too and I think Thunder Force III too...
Not sure about Gradius V & Thunder Force V was not as I remember!

I'd have to say I'd much prefer The Third Lightning to be in there.

Such a wonderful game. The stages are gorgeous and there are THREE solid loops. It's the best "console/arcade cross(fusion!)" that I've ever seen in the 16-bit days. As far as I know, it's one of... three... games this Ikuko Mimori has ever composed for, and the score is legendary so where is this guy?

That game is a JRPG, though.

I'm pretty sure that's correct, but the book generally does not cover games that didn't get any sort of release in the US. It makes mention of when a game in it didn't have much of a presence in the US but were more successful elsewhere (eg: some of the early computer stuff was very minor here but huge in the UK). The only game I can think of that's in the book that might not have a US release is Radiant Silvergun; I don't know if the arcade version ever officially was released here or not.
