RGB to RGB with sync on green question

Post by Strider77 »

I just snagged a PVM 20L5... really stoked about it since it's a 4x3 that is totally ok with being in vert position (tate). Not to mention it takes 240p all the way up to 1080i natively (including all the resolutions between 240p to 1080i).

It takes component fine but also takes RGB.. the thing is it takes RGB with the sync on green. I have no real knowledge or experience with this format. I would think it's just a matter of wiring the sync and the green signal together since this monitor does not need a H and V sync. But I am unsure of this and worried that wiring the two together would increase the voltage of that particular line once combined. A resistor may be needed?

Also there is a port that is labeled external sync.... now I assumed that this was for the composite sync line at first. Now i am not so sure. Descriptions in the manual are worded in a way that leads me to believe it's for linking multiple monitors together.... but I'm not sure if they mean syncing the remote options or not. This is the part where I make myself sound like an idiot if it is indeed for the composite sync.

I'm not sure either way.... looking for some experts to help me through this.

I'm in love with the monitor... Ketsui and DFK on the 360 look fantastic. The results FAR excited my hopes. I never knew a CRT could have an image this, PERFECT. Geometry and convergence.... my jaw dropped. Hooked up the PS2 via component and was thrilled to see scanlines intact via true low res as well. I am also shocked at how close Ketsui looks to 240p when sent to the monitor as 480i from the 360...

Payed 150.00 US dollars and he even brought it to my house. Was still in the box. The only bad thing I could say about it is it's a 20 inch monitor.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

No need tobsync on green, external sync is indeed c-sync and I think composite sync will work as well.

Awesome find! Sounds like it was NIB or MIB? The Sony PVMs with loop through RGB inputs on BNCs always mark the sync input as external sync. So yes, the external sync input IS for the RGB/Component input. A SoG circuit isn't applicable. Sony CRTs also accept composite video as sync, so you wouldn't need a sync stripper with this monitor either.

You could use your existing RGB cables with this monitor. All you'd need is a SCARTF to 4 BNC adapter. PM me if you want one!

It's all done... had everything I needed and it's all hooked up. This thing is freaking perfect, I'm in love with it. The 360 ports look fantastic on it. I was amazed at how well the arcade modes looked (non HD) on it. Ketsui looks quite good even when viewed in 480i.

This is one of the best purchases I have made in the past few years. 150.00 in the box for a reference level CRT sony monitor that handles 240p up to 1080i natively.... and it handles tate perfectly, straight from the gaming gods.

A cool feature is with component input, if you feed it a reference level color bar/calibration image the TV has the ability to self calibrate the color temperatures perfectly. As long as you make sure the image you are using matches to the standard you are asking the TV to calibrate to.

I chose to use SMPTE, but it lists a lot of other standards that I have not heard of. Even handles Pal standards as well.

Looks like the 20L5 demands sky high prices on eBay, lucky you to snag one for a mere 150, and with delivery at that.

I think I would actually see the 20" size as a plus, at that size anything from 240p to 1080i looks fantastic. Congrats.

Yeah I'm ok with the 20 inch size... my other PVM was the same size also.
