Saturn Solar Eclipse any good??...

Post by dave4shmups »

I'm curious as to what people on this site think of this game; I've done some research and hardly anyone seems to rate this game lower then a 7.4 out of 10.

I am also asking because I am trying to trade my Saturn Darius II. Haven't been having much luck on this site, so I got on gametz.com, and there is one guy on there who wants Saturn Darius II, and Solar Eclipse is one of the Saturn games he has up for trade.

The others he has are: Skeleton Warriors, Super Dimension Fortress Macross, House of the Dead, and Virtua Fighter remix.

Skeleton Warriors sounds like a great action hack and slash, but I've heard that the shooting levels suck, and, in any case, Shinobi Legions is probably a lot better.

I'm not a big fan, but it's pretty decent if you like Starfox type games. The graphics are a bit pixellated considering it was a 3DO game originally, but the gameplay is pretty good. It also has some cheesy voiceovers, which can either enhance the experience or annoy you, depending on who you are. But yeah, Shinobi Legions is a lot better.

Anyway, if you're still interested in Solar Eclipse, I'd trade my copy for a Darius II. I think we're both in Denver so it would be a quick trade.

We are indeed both in Denver, but I have made several offers to trade Darius II for Shinobi Legions on gametz.com. If those don't work out, you've got yourself a deal! :D

I found this comparision between Saturn and PS1 Off-World Interceptor Extreme:

http://www.gamezero.com/team-0/articles ... r_extreme/

Seems that the PS1 version is superior, but I most reviews for this game that I've found, rank it very low.

The one thing that does really concern me about Solar Eclipse is the fact that it has 40 minutes of video in it! Ugh! Is this stuff you have to/need to listen to, or can you skip through it?

Dave.. how much do you want for your Darius 2? That trade would equal like exchanging a piece of silver for some... uh... lead.

Heh, yeah, I don't know how one could prefer Solar Eclipse to Darius II, but hey, I figured I'd make the offer. ;)

As for the video in Solar Eclipse, yes you can skip it. It's a cheesy sci-fi story with that chick from Babylon 5 in it.

Specineff-would you take $25 for it?-it's in great shape and even has the spine card. That's what I payed for it, minus shipping, and I'll make that part free! Just give me a day or two longer to see if anyone on gametz.com takes my offer to trade it for Shinobi Legions. But if the offers expire, then it's your's if for that price if you want it! :P

BTW, dave, I bought a new copy of Shin Shinobi Den (Japanese version of Legions) for $15.00 off McVans.com a while back. If you go to their Saturn import section, it looks like they still have some. The game doesn't require any Japanese except for the cutscenes (which are pretty obvious anyway). They also have Solar Eclipse new for the same price.

Thanks for the info! Is McVans.com located in the US? Because I can't use a credit card or paypal right now.

BTW, speaking of Darius II, what the hell is "Tuna Sasimi"??

Yeah. They're in the US, in the Midwest somewhere I think, and are pretty reliable, although they don't always have stuff in stock that's listed in stock on their site. They'll inform you about it right away if that's the case.

As for tuna sashimi, it's just raw cut tuna. And ever since I first played Darius II, I have used that phrase as a sexual innuendo. I'm so immature. ;)

My god, trade for House of the Dead.

Graphics and load times suck, but it's the best House of the Dead yet and the second best light gun game on the Saturn (just a hair behind the original Virtua Cop). HotD is also one of the 7 rarest US Released Saturn games.

For anyone that cares, the rarest is Lost & Found Volume 1, with 3D Baseball, Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition Net Link, House of The Dead, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Sega Worldwide Soccer '98, and Winning Post bringing up the rear.

I was being sarcastic. Offworld Interceptor Extreme or whatever isn't even remotely playable its so bad. :p

Digitpress has it listed as a 5, so it's a toughie to track down (especially since most stores don't even bother stocking saturn games at all), but not on par with the previously listed games :)

I would've thought Winning Post was more rare than PDSaga, HotD, Magic Knight Rayearth (which can still be purchased NEW from the Working Designs website), and Shining Force III...

I don't see anyone saying otherwise, considering Digitpress lists MKR as a 4 and Shining Force III as a 3....it IS more rare.

And yea, I've contemplated buying MKR directly from WD in the past, but I'd feel real guilty about giving them my money. Afterall, Vic Ireland is a fucking tool.

I've never played Solar Eclipse, but Skeleton Warriors is a pretty cool game with awesome epic heroic fantasy music (If you're into that stuff) The shooting games aren't that great but there are only 2 if memory serves right, so it shouldn't bother you much. The game is quite long too but can get a bit repetitive at times. The graphics are about the same as the PS-1 version & it actually has transparencies (Rare for a Saturn game) generated probably through software routines. The Scaling & Rotation of some Boss sprites is slightly worse than the PS-1 version, but the FMVs are just as good.
Overall I would say it's a fair trade for the Saturn Darius II.

I've never played Shinobi Legions, but I doubt it's any better than Shinobi 3 on the Geny. I would imagine it's on par with Skeleton Warriors.

I've never played Super Dimension Fortress Macross on the Saturn, only for the PS-1. I've read that graphics are supposed to be as good as the PS-1, with just a few minor slowdowns compared to the PS-1. Also the FMVs are a bit worse, but I would definitely trade Darius II for this as it's not very easy to come by (At least in this part of the world ;) ) & tends to be on the rare side of things.

As for House of the Dead, and Virtua Fighter remix... well they suck big time! No way would I trade Darius II for those!

I say trade it for Macros but I would try to keep Darius II as well, since the Saturn version adds the cool scaling to change the screen size to your tastes & needs.
