STGs with NO SCORING AT ALL!

Post by Ed Oscuro »

This is a rare type of game indeed, isn't it? Even Force Gear, Tiny Phalanx, and Daioh Gale had scoring systems, even if they are as simple as "shoot the enemy for points." I would even assume the Pocketstation-themed "Jienryu" (for Gekioh Shooting King aka the Shienryu PSX port) has scoring. You would think that since keeping score would help gamers compare notes so it would always be included.

But apparently there is a game badass enough not to need those digits cluttering up the screen.

That game is Psychic Storm! A PC Engine game - 1992 Telenet Japan and Alfa System, of all sources. It's also pretty easy - didn't die once in the whole play, though getting through without taking any hits would be a different matter. It even has auto-bombing. That aside I didn't see any reason why they couldn't have scores - the graphic quality isn't so profound that they couldn't afford the digits, I thought. But at least it does seem to play very smoothly.

Are there any others? Let the search commence, loose the hounds!

On the PC Engine, you also have Barunba and Legion (CD).
On the Saturn there's (I think) Terra Cresta 3D.

EDIT: I was wrong about Planet Joker. sorry

Legion for PC Engine CD. Telenet had their hands in this one as well. It's an exceptionally badly designed game in other ways too.

edit: Dang, Kollision beat me to it.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Oh, how terri-I mean that's wonderful! There's enough members to set up their own Scoreless STGs fraternity now. Though...Planet Joker and Terra Cresta 3D...oh my...and as Terra Cresta II had a (slowdown plague-ridden) caravan mode, I'm surprised they took out scoring entirely. But they did. Hmm!

How about games which don't let you see the score until the cutscene, or better yet to the all clear or name entry? Add to Viper Phase 1 or Shienryu style scoring for maximum excellence.

Sorry, I was mistaken about Planet Joker. It does have scoring.
I guess my mindset was overloaded with crap so I made the wrong association.

I do enjoy Raiden DX's 100% shoot down bonus that applies regardless of where you game over. Kill yourself off as quickly as possible while making sure to shoot everything? 1000000 points!

There are a few "art" "games" with no scoring. It's probably a meaningful message about something or other.

Hyper Duel's scoring is such a robotarded clusterfuck, I wish it had none at all.

(effectively it doesn't for me, since I just go for 100% destruction and good ol' Tecno Soft NO MISS BONUS [hard as hell due to rank]. Babysitting suicidal AI and holding off the ammo is for Silent Hill 4, not the best unofficial Macross game ever. And staying still for points is something from an STG for the deceased)

Iirc, that clay-mation PSP shmup gave a time of survival rather than a score. Is that right?

You're talking about Platypus?
It does have a proper score.

Hmmm, haven't played in a long time, but I thought there was a mode that only recorded survival time. I'm probably misremembering.

e.g. Solace, described as "a unique journey through the five stages of grief".

A rail shooter, but the original Star Fox didn't really have a score. You were awarded a score, but it was simply a percentage of shootdowns. Shooting a small enemy and a big one both count as 1%.

It's amazing what vector graphics, ambient music and psychobabble can do for a game that doesn't stand up by its own merits.

I had this in my mind as well, but I checked a video at the time and saw that the game does give you a score. However it's shown only after each stage ends.
