Phoenix on 360, ps3 or nintendo ds/gba?

Post by Phoenix »

Is there a topic where we can ask little questions like:

can i play Phoenix (the old arcadegame) legally on my pal ps3 or pal 360?

I am asking here cause this is a chat topic. I dont know if i should open a new topic for a simple question like this, or that somewhere on the forum there is a topic for these sort of questions.

The better option, rather than hijacking an existing topic, would be to use the search function or to PM a moderator with specific questions regarding posting.

From wikipedia:
Phoenix was released on the Xbox, PlayStation 2, PSP and the PC as part of Taito Legends in the US and Europe, and Taito Memories II Gekan in Japan.
If your console have backward compatibility, then you could get a copy of Taito Legends and play Phoenix.

Phoenix is a famous old game where developers made one of the first attempts to increase scoring possibility when the player takes on more risk. The arcade flyer, if I'm thinking about the right game, shows the big phoenix bird being shot high on the screen, and lower (close to the player) and asks which player will score better. Dunno how influential it was but I think some people took note.

I really want to play it on my ps3, which is a slim, so no backwards comp.

Phoenix was the first shooter with an endboss.

But, ok, i cant play it i am afraid.

Err...some of the sounds in the Taito Legends version are quite different from the original arcade version. I wonder why?

Phoenix was the first shmup I played on the arcades. I love the sound effects.

Yes, i heard that too. Some sounds are good other not.

But there is no ps3 or xbox360 yet. I hope it comes out, maybe a 100% arcade version this time.

Somebody knows or i can play it on my DS lite? That would be fun to play too i think. And the DS is not regionlocked and can play GBA games. So i hope some one can help me: is Phoenix a game on the ds or gba?

For whatever reason emu took a long time to get the sound right and , unfortunately, the Taito Collection version doesn't sound like the PCB unfortunately. The sound is a pretty big thing if you really like the game. At least... it was for me.

regarding the game, i don't think it's proximity based for the scoring - i think it's arbitary. Though there are several different versions of the game. On the Centuri boards i have it's pretty much random. That said, it does pay for you to let the first and second wave birds come down to the bottom as if you nail then flying left or right back up the screen then you can get a basic bonus on those and if you nail three in quick succession you can drop 200k points.

First game i felt i was actually good at i guess and still love the look and sound of it.

not "legally" , no - there was no official release. PSP -does- have it though on the Taito Legends Power Up collection.

Phoenix has a nice port for the 2600. Odd how it wasn't ported to Atari 400/800/XL/XE or 5200.

They also avoided developing music for this game by using classical tunes.

When you hear the sounds one by one maybe it is not real good.

But when you hear them all next to each other, while dodging bullets and shoot those birds/phoenixes, then it transforms into an adrenaline rushing symphony.

I really hope for an xbl or psn title: Phoenix HD, which include the 100% arcade game as a bonus.

Shall i keep on dreaming?

I feel like an idiot - I went into this thread thinking you guys were referring to Phoenix Wright.

Speaking of Taito Legends however, I have that game but can never seem to get ANY of the games to work properly on ANY computer I've tried. What the hell?
EDIT: Well bugger me, I get the disc out after making this post, install Taito Legends and it actually works! Great stuff!

I'm amazed that the Taito Legends and Taito Memories versions of this game sound like two totally different games, are either one of them correct in sound? I know the Memories version uses a different music set, they changed the Rainbow Islands tune to something a bit more up to date as well.

I'm not sure if the JP sounds are correct, but the one in Taito Legends sounds different from this. The 2600 only sounds vaguely like the arcade and I think the same sound effects are used in other 2600 games. Here is a video.

Do you have video footage of the JP Memories versions of Rainbow Islands and Phoenix? I would like to hear what they sound like (and see how they run). I searched youtube, but didn't find footage from the JP ones aside from a couple trailers that don't have the games' sound playing.

No, no vids that I know of on Youtube or Nico of either game, I did hear some of the song or RI Extra (RI original sounds pretty much the same) in one of the Taito Memories trailer, but it's played pretty briefly. I don't have a video camera either, so I can't capture footage, perhaps someone else can.

The Phoenix music is different from this on Memories, but the sound FX sound pretty close, still might not be correct though.

Ah, it's another one of those PCEFX! posting parodies going around, y'know? I got a hearty chuckle reading this myself. Ed's got a cool sense of humor.

True story: There was a full-sized Phoenix cab that I spotted inside a church set on Free Play. I pressed the Start button and proceeded to play it. Was told by an adult to not to play with it and left it as it was. Was fun to try it out for the brief time that I was able to do so. This was back in the early 1980s mind you (when it was common to see such cool arcade game cabs everywhere dotting the American landscape). Ain't like that nowdays, given the current state of the American arcade gaming scene these days.

I did spot a Centuri released Phoenix upright cab set on "Free Play" mode at the 2010 California Extreme show back in July of 2010.
