Graphical glitches on Aero Fighters PCB, any way to fix?

Post by drunkninja24 »

Just picked up a cheap Aero Fighters PCB today (like $18), and pretty much immediately noticed a ton of graphical glitches when I started it up. First I get this:

And it doesn't get much better in game:

I've looked over the board and don't see anything physically wrong, here's a pic anyway just in case someone can see something:

Any suggestions or ideas, or is the board shot?

Areo Fighters is a pretty big/heavy board from what I remember, so its likely the PCB flexed and some traces or SMT chip legs might have lifted from the PCB.

Lay the board down on some cardboard, while plugged into your jamma loom, and use the eraser end of a pencil to press down (and hold) on different chips to see if the glitches get worse/better/change. This helps you narrow down where the problem might be, and possibly fixed with a resolder or reflow of surface mounted chips.

Hmm, checked around the board and couldn't find anything wrong with the traces, I pulled out all the socketed chips and went over the pins with an eraser and put them back in, but still the same result. The game is playable, but it still has those glitches.

Also forgot to mention, the sound is real choppy as well.

Looking at the 3rd pic and seeing the bomb counters at the bottom of the screen, I'd say you have the uber rare 4-player version of Aero Fighters. Nice find!!!
