What happened to the Psikyo devs

Post by Zeron »

What did happen to them after Psikyo shutdown? I see a trend amongst shooter developers that usually they just create a new company when their previous one has gone bankrupt or the devs join some other shooter dev but in Psikyo's case I have no idea whatever happened to these guys did they leave video games forever?

Got out of gaming?

... No idea specifically ... wasn't there a rumour that some went to snk?

The 'shut-down' was refuted, in 2002/3, but I think that was a publicity play for keeping the brand going - effectively I think the real devs were gone then... not much help probably ...

After the 10,000th message board comment about all of their shmups being exactly the same game with different graphics, they all went insane and are currently hiding in a remote village in Cambodia.

Didn't some of the guys form X-Nauts? They developed PS2 Cho Aniki and handled the Psikyo Shooting Collection and Gunbird ports as well. I think they also made a 3rd Sengoku game for the PSP, but I heard bad things about it.

I think PSIKYO did some really cool scrolling effects like in the Strikers games the larger airplanes dont just explode they start loosing altitude catch fire then explode when falling to the ground.

Agreed. I picked up the gunbird games, and am not a huge fan of the music. Though very similar, they offer enough differences for me to enjoy having both titles. I really like the animation; however, the scrolling and randomness facilitates more than a few angry outbursts.

As far as I can figure out...

Zero Gunner 2 was the last shmup made by the original Psikyo team, and they went bankrupt sometime after releasing Buggy Grand Prix: Kattobi Daisakusen on the PS2. Some of the developers then formed X-Nauts, who inherited Psikyo's licenses and continued to release games under the Psikyo name. They licensed the PS2 ports of their arcade games to Taito and Atlus for publishing work.

X-Nauts also went out of business after Taisen Hot Gimmick 5: Mirai e Gou, with Cho Aniki PS2 and Sengoku Cannon being the only original shmups they developed. I assume everyone involved is scattered around various other companies now, and apparently GungHo (who published CA Zero) currently owns the Cho Aniki license.

That answer your question?

PM Studios put out PSP versions of Strikers 1945 Plus and Gunbird 2. Don't know much else about them though.

So there's some chance that Cho Aniki Zero was put together by Psikyo folk?

The gameplay gives an average impression of it being so. Really mediocre game though. I haven't 1cc'd it with the chick yet.
