Haha, decent RPGs... The only good/decent RPGs are Secret of Mana 2, Golden Sun, and whats the name of it... Well it will hit me in the head later. Maybe its just those two actually.
Oh, you guys are talking about Action Adventure games, my bad...
Lol and how can you Include Albert's Odyssey with Alundra. Fail...
Always wanted to try NWN btw but didn't get the chance. Its the same thing as Baldurs Gate supposedly, which is like a combination of Action Adventure and turn based I suppose with a touch of RPG elements, quite a mix up tbh.

Final Fantasy Tactics is turn based, but good mention. I haven't played the playstation one yet. Since you mentioned that, I'll throw in Front Mission.

Re: Actually decent RPGs
Theres nothing wrong with action adventures but most of the games we are discussing are C-rpgs (computer-rpgs) which tend to be more true to D&D and the spirit of true role playing then J-rpgs which are more centred about stats and random battles in the OCD way the japanese approach their games, plus a storyline / plot thats more centered around characters and npcs then western rpgs. All are RPGs though even alundra
Edit if were talking about Srpgs dont forget about Warsong / Langrisser games! (I know i mention it in every thread but for any srpg fan who hasnt played any of the english (+ fan) translated games really needs to. Its the same as a platformer nut having never played a mario game or a shmupper who hasnt played space invaders or gradius)

Im so green with all you D&D players.
When i was a kid a was nuts about D&D and games workshop but all my mate were football of video game nuts and had no intrest in board games. AVGN board james vids where he plays the obsessed RPGer who nomatter how much he trys to get his mates intrested in playing them never gets anywhere and ends up playing on his own like some saddo. Thats my childhood there.

As a dedicated indie gamer, it is my obligation to correct the games people mention per genre listing, especially if they are really obvious.drauch wrote:I was going to say the same thing. as ive allready said action rpgs are still rpgs, its a very broad genre like shoot em ups are
Re: Actually decent RPGs
Never really liked to many RPGs, but I do have a soft spot for anything ATLUS, so I kinda like Persona. Also gotta love "Summon Night: Swordcraft Story" for the GBA. Loved the fighting game sequences as opposed to having another lame turn-based battle.
When the bullets shoot bullets, you know you have a problem.

Re: Actually decent RPGs
Too bad it's so hard to find a good group. I have a bunch of 3e sourcebooks, and I look through them constantly for munchkining purposes (Epic Level Handbook FTW!), but considering that nobody else seems to be interested they don't do me much good.drauch wrote:Every sundayRNGmaster wrote:Does anyone here play D&D?

Re: Actually decent RPGs
Wow Limbrooke
I just listed most of the ones I enjoyed off the top of my head
Had a few minutes. I purposely skipped a lot of great stuff like Warsong, Shining Force, Disgaea, Tactics Ogre, Ys series, Fire Emblem series, Advance Wars series and Alundra cause they weren't straight RPGs and forgot a few like KoToR and Lunar Silver Star Story. And Ur-Quan Masters is one of my favorite games of all time, even back when it was just Star Control 2. Never liked Earthbound myself....got bored with it almost instantly when I tried to play it.
I specifically added Xenosaga and FFXIII not because they're "Good" but because I enjoyed them personally regardless of if they were good or not. Only listed so many things to give a wide variety (and I was sleepy
) as the thread didn't really ask for top 3 or top five or whatever.
Mostly skipped PC cause I haven't played many of em or enjoyed many of the ones I did. I do like Fallout 1 and 2 and Septerra Core though. Tried Morrowind after loving Oblivion so much and it was a bit too dated for me. Pretty much the same thing it seemed like though. Got Planescape Torment installed but haven't tried it yet.

Re: Actually decent RPGs
I find it depressing that the only two major companies outputting cRPGs left in North America (the continent fairly meritorious in this regard) are BioWare and Bethesda (instead of quite a few other ones I'd rather see alive and kicking), and Chris Avellone works for BOTH. At last Piranha Bytes don't give up. Dissing the likes of Arcanum and Gothic as unfinished, buggy, amateurish etc. I can understand, but not coming from people who jizz over Morrowind (as if it wasn't at least just as, you know, untidy). All the greatest cRPGs I played were technically messy as hell (Fallout 1&2 being arguably the least broken).

Little to no knowledge? Why the fuck would I criticize on shit I don't know jack about. I know what Alundra is, I know what Golden Sun is, I know what Secret of Mana 2 is, I can go on. I'm not some stupid ass thats gona go on nonsensically ranting about something I don't know ANYTHING about, what the fuck? Seriously? And I'll be honest with you, I am a fan of the Darius series.drauch wrote:JGcontraman wrote:Haha, decent RPGs... Calm down. It's one thing to say your opinion nicely, and another thing to bash people and their tastes. I've seen you do it in multiple threads, as other users have pointed out in your month or so of being here. Just take it easy and get your point across without cursing or laughing at someone; it will go over much smoother and successfully.

Yea we've seen allot of angry newcommers who rock the boat recently, so heres a tip to any newcommer. While theres nothing all that wrong with not mincing your words and been frank with ppl. Ppl posting nothing but negative comments and / or making personal attacks out of the blue will genrally be told to GTFO sooner then later by members who are quick to pick up on these things.
Thats not to say you cant be a dick now and again, hell even me whos genrally a chilled out guy IRL likes to rant, moan and be a total cynical bastard about non sensical nerdy things, this is a chat forum after all just dont do it all the time especially if you're new here and ppl dont know you. Just do what I do, be genrally polite and chilled out during the week, that saves enough good karma so that at the weekend you can go off on some drunken half baked nerdy rant and not get perma-bannned. Its worked like a charm for me for ages now

Re: Actually decent RPGs
Those attributes are a blessing and a curse. Some RPGs are time consuming in a good way, others not so much. In the old days there were games like Phantasy Star 2 where the amount of grinding was a bit extreme, and your characters walked at a conspicuously slow pace. I liked the game anyway, but it certainly would have been better if it were more like Phantasy Star 4 in that regard (one of my all time favorites). In the post-cartridge era, sadly, new ways of wasting the player`s time were invented: loading, video clips, spoken dialog, annoying mini-games, and text displays timed for first-grader reading speed. Some programmers were astute and made these things avoidable with a simple button press, but others have refused to see the light. So yeah, the slow aspect can be bad. On the other side of the coin, I like to burn through time by micromanaging various stats or equipment or whatever. I have fond memories of sitting at the Langrisser 3 sakusenkaigi screen and changing classes, changing equipment, rearranging characters on the map, changing classes some more, etc. before the scene even begins. However, despite the slow nature and focus on story...
As for the story, I`m not sure how important it is. There are some games where a good story carries a weak or broken battle system, but I think there were more games that I liked that had fun gameplay while the story went in one ear and out the other, so to speak.
Games not yet mentioned in this thread: Panzer Dragoon Saga (some people love it but for me it was a bit lacking in excitement). Charles Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden (if you played the Working Designs release of Albert Odyssey and decided that a parody of an RPG sucks, think again!)

Conspicuously slow pace? I don't think the NPCs ever stopped to take notice, as they walked even slower and more aimlessly than you did.and your characters walked at a conspicuously slow pace.
I don't think I've ever spent much time looking at a loading screen in any RPG, and I wouldn't say it's a waste of time given the games were now many hundreds of times larger. In the post-cartridge era, sadly, new ways of wasting the player`s time were invented: loading
http://insomnia.ac/commentary/a_brief_h ... cutscenes/video clips
How is spoken dialog a waste of time? In most cases it can be skipped, and I consider voiceovers to be A Good Thing.spoken dialog
Sheesh, I'm all for relentlessly criticizing JRPGs as well and it isn't too hard to do it right.
Such as how grinding is one of the worst gaming concepts ever invented and I've yet to hear of a JRPG that had a respectable command of the English language and NARRATIVE PACING that didn't dip into endless irrelevant plot threads that contributed nothing besides padding the game length. Oh, and lest we not forget the battle systems where the vast majority of the encounters are won by pressing FIGHT every round in-between your endless walking-around-in-circle spasm to get your lifeless stack of numbers high enough to beat the next boss (level checkpoint) so you can read the next few paragraphs of text prompting you to go to the next location and do more grinding there and...
Fuck JRPGs.
That is a bizarre comparison.Charles Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden (if you played the Working Designs release of Albert Odyssey and decided that a parody of an RPG sucks, think again!)

I usually am too involved by actually reading his essays to notice the frequency in which he uses endashes. They're just brief pauses in speech to separate related independent clauses. I'm not there to rate his writing on AESTHETICS, I'm there to read what he HAS TO SAY. What he has to say is rather worthwhile, in my opinion. You should try listening sometime.
Also, personally, I find the semicolon much more annoying in the same context than an endash.

For me, it's not just about aesthetics, it's about the general choice of words and writing tone, which is just inadequate.
The opinions expressed may be based on valid points, but the writing is just plain in bad style.
Which is deliciously ironic, considering the elitist nature of the site.
