Thinking of buying a (PAL) PS3... what do I want?
I already have Demons Souls, Shadow of the colossus and maybe lords of shadow on my list of will buys.
Are there any Shmups on PS3??
EDIT: Already got a 360 with ESP Galuda ii and mushi futari... waiting for deathsmiles too.

As for shmups, there aren't many. RayStorm is on PSN, but they stretched it out, so it sucks. There are some good old PS1 shmups on the J PSN, but I haven't bought any, so you'd have to ask others.
As for disc based games, if you like strategy games, I can't recommend Valkyria Chronicles enough. That has probably been one of the most fully satisfying games of this gen, for me.
God Of War III, if you like the series.

Yakuza 3. Brilliant game. Well, it's kinda a butchered localisation with all that unnecessary cuts but throughly enjoyable experience anyway.

I'm a more adventure type person and I've found these entertaining
Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Infamous, Dead Space, Prince of Persia Sands of time. I found quite a lot of entertainment in all of those.
You can get God of War 1,2,3 on the PS3 and they all represent good graphics gameplay etc.
I would recommend Dead Nation next month if you like Gauntlet type games. Joe Dangerous, Wipeout HD and GT5 are all worth a look.
The best shmup on the PS3 would be that PSN title. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I98leBC8UrE

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Urgh... Soldner X - I bought that for the PC when it was first released. It wasn't really much good.
I do indeed like gauntlet style games though so maybe I will check out Dead Nation.
Thanks!

Re: Thinking of buying a (PAL) PS3... what do I want?
Just a FYI: all PS3 games are region-free, so don't worry about it being PAL or NTSC or whatever. The only limitation is that you'll only be able to access your region's store with your account, but you can make other accounts to access stores in every region. It's worth it since they can have very different content.
As for shmups, well, there aren't many. Aside from the PS1 ones and Soldner-X, there's only Space Invaders Infinity Gene which is a really good, challenging game. The rest are either arena shooters (quite a few of them, but the best is Super Stardust HD) or rail shooters (After Burner Climax).
Retail games I'd suggest:
- Pinball Hall of Fame: Williams Collection
- Lost Planet 2 (3rd person shooter)
- MAG (256-player online FPS)
- Dead Space (survival horror)
- Super Street Fighter 4
- Uncharted 2 (action/adventure)
- Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
- 3D Dot Game Heroes (Zelda-like RPG)
- Killzone 2 (FPS)
PSN games:
- Crystal Defenders (tower defense)
- Zen Pinball
- Castle Crashers (beat-em-up)
- Critter Crunch (puzzle)
- Megaman 9 / 10
- Fat Princess (kind of like Team Fortress)

That's a different game you know.Leader Bee wrote:Urgh... Soldner X - I bought that for the PC when it was first released. It wasn't really much good.
Anyway, I enjoyed Soldner-X2. I never played the first one so I can't say anything about that. It can be pretty easy to 1cc on the easier difficulties but playing for score is a different thing. Only euroshmuppy about the game was the healthbars to me, there's a decent scoring system and a bunch of challenges to keep you busy.
For other shmups.
PSN: You're pretty much limited with Soldner X games, Raystorm HD and Space invaders extreme. But the later 2 are also on the xbox so if you wanted you probably had them already. There's also this 1942: join strike game but I don't know about that. Oh and I almost forgot the Rocking android games, the gundamonium thing collection.
PS1: Lots of stuff, Einhander, Thunder force V, Zanac x zanac, Raystorm, raycrisis, donpachi, dodonpachi, r-type games, and a bunch of others. Some on US psn, all on JP psn.
PC-engine: There's some, but I didn't get others than Soldier Blade and Super star soldier. I'm really enjoying these two so far.
For other games I really don't have much to add. Just seconding Wipeout HD (+Fury) (psn).

Re: Thinking of buying a (PAL) PS3... what do I want?
Raystorm is the really chatty arcade shmup right?
From the state of things it looks as though I'd be best sticking to the 360 for my shmups, so any other non-shmups you guys could recommend?
Is there a secret of mana type game on PS3? Sword of mana, legend of mana etc?

Re: Thinking of buying a (PAL) PS3... what do I want?
PS3 exclusives I recommend:
Heavenly Sword
Heavy Rain
Killzone 2
Uncharted 2
Valkyria Chronicles
Metal Gear Solid 4 is good if you've been following the series, but the latter half may bore you if it's the first game in the series you've played.
Afrika is a good change of pace, and it's possible to take some nice photos with a little (or a lot) of patience. The controls are clunky and the whole experience feels even more artificial than you might expect, but I give it a conditional recommendation. You'll have to import the US or Asian version, but it's region free.
On PSN: Wipeout HD, Noby Noby Boy, Flower, and Siren.

Demon's Souls you already have, 3D dot game heroes was mentioned already by Ruldra, Senjou no Valkyria too...
So I add NieR to the list. It's a very decent action-rpg mixed with other genres in it like shmups, adventure and platforming.

I'll add in another recommendation for Valkyria Chronicles - it's actually the sole reason I own a PS3.

Re: Thinking of buying a (PAL) PS3... what do I want?
Bought a 160 gig myself recently (only the older 60 gig is backwards compatible with PS2 iirc), to be honest the console has few noteworthy exclusives. I'd recommend:
God of War 3
Metal Gear Solid 4 (Not as good as MGS3)
Gran Turismo 5
WipeOut HD Fury
Heavy Rain, Uncharted 1 and 2 are probably worth playing aswell.
Killzone 2 is nice to look at however the aiming mechanics destroy what could be a great franchise.
Demon Souls haven't played, lot of people seem to like it.
Heavenly sword, Played the demo and strongly disliked the combat fluidity.
Some good stuff on the PSN: Grandia 1 stands out in particular, will buy this eventually. God of War 1 and 2 pretty much a given if you like action games. Truly a great piece of hardware, needs more essential exclusive titles.
