Haha, I watched this recently as well. My plot synopsis for the film: There's a close-call approaching, We're not going to make it! We made it! Repeat for 2 and a half hours

To live and die in L.A. I've had a date with this movie for a long time. I mean, there's the French Connection which is one of my favorite films, and of course no one is going to deny how great Friedken's Exorcist is. I haven't seen any of his other films, but loving the filthy cop genre, I wanted to love this film, but the clips I'd seen of it pushed me away. No longer. Drinking several pints of beer and immersing myself in the cheap 80's cinema vibe, I was ready! Fucking To Live and Die in LA is damning! It isn't merely souless, but rather if you once believed in something akin to morals, goodness, kindness, human decency, etc., expect to lose it in this spiraling vortex of filth. It isn't quite what the French Connection was, but the atrocities committed here run deeper than I had recalled from clips shown on television. Seriously, whatever reason or rational you've told yourself for getting up the next day and going to work is a lie. Humanity is burning. There is no salvation. Get a gun and go for broke!

How are Friedkin's other movies?

I recently watched Beauty and the Beast, Back to the future 3 and Alien on blu ray.
The Blu-Ray Criterion version of House (1977) is up for grabs at $19.99 USD on the Barnes and Nobles site: http://video.barnesandnoble.com/DVD/Hou ... 114/?pwb=2

His remake of 12 Angry Men is supposed to be pretty good. ther than the three you've mentioned, the only other one I've seen is Bug, which I quite enjoyed.

One part I didn't understand is the first plane take off. One minute they make the take off, 30 seconds later the ground is all around them like it sunk 1 mile into the earth. The time line is warped as well. The London Olympics won't be on in December, but I can't think if the movies disaster started way ahead of the Dec 21st date or not.

And yes, the near miss catastrophe is over done to the point incinerated toast.

On the blu ray there is an alternative ending which has to be seen to be believed. The cruise liner escapes sinking by hitting exposed rocks and everyone on it is cheering when they see the arc's coming by.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

This is the last bit I'll say about House. After returning the netflix rental I found myself wanting to see it again, that damn song stuck in my head. I finally picked up the blu-ray and gave it another spin. Even better the second time! House really is a great film in its own special way--I mean, it's proabably too strange for most people these days, but if you take a liking to it, I think it will stay with you a long time.

Saw much of this on a recent plane flight. I'm a massive McGuyver fan (with no irony at all), so I was hoping for a witty parody of the many nuances of the originally TV series. I was hugely disappointed. I couldn't even finish it.

Just saw the rather dissapointing Beer Wars documentary (you can see it on Netflix streaming.) Attempts to go somewhere in a michael moore fashion, but never really gets off the ground. As one reviewer noted: "Oh my god, big businesses acting like big businesses, oh my!" Yeah, no shit, microbreweries are run by people who love beer, and Budweiser is run by people who love money. Really? Mostly cool for watching Sam from Dogfish head refurbish his brewery. The absense of Sierra Nevada (oldest US craft brewery?) is duly noted and doesn't aid my opinion of the film. If anything is exposed here it's that the US still has some shitty beer laws still left over from the prohibition era and that Beer is distributed as poorly as comics are. Wow.

Next time I watch a beer documentary, I hope it is by someone who isn't allergic to beer.

Me and Mrs spadgy have had a couple of days off of work and watched a nice run of films:

The Killers - The 1946 one, and one of the sharpest movies I've seen in a very long time. Awesome scripting and on screen chemistry. Easily as good as the mighty Double Indemnity!

We Are What We Are - The new film out at the cinema about a cannabalisitc family. More of a thrillker than a horror, and generally great. A great satire of family life, but it didn't tie up enough loose ends for my taste.

Shutter Island - A beauty of a film, but something about it annoyed me ever so slightly. Well worth a watch though.

The Blue Dahlia - Another great old film noir.

Watched Slumdog Millionare last night. Danny Boyle is an awesome director, and while that shows in Slumdog, it just can't escape teenage love triangle it finds itself in during the second half. This film was another "I love the first half, I hate the second half" affair. The first half felt incredibly visceral, inviting a genuine investment from the audience in the orphans. But it just seemed like there was nowhere to go after that. Once it became evidence what the film was really about, one could almost feel the collective sigh. And really, Taj Mahal and Phone customer service? Darjeeling Limited did a much better job at showing another side of India then this film did. In the hands of a less competant director, I can't imagine this being anything other than a flop.

Still, it's really a beautiful movie. If you aren't bothered by cheesy teen romance nonsense or can turn that off and just watch the camera work and color composition then certain dig in! Or even better, just don't watch the second half of the film (although I enjoyed the end credits.)

I watched the Signal earlier today. I liked it and some parts were genuinely hilarious, but I really hated the random bits of dialogue where they try to explain what the signal was. It felt totally unnecessary and tacked on.

Funny you should mention the 1st half/2nd half duality, as the best example of this imo is another of Boyle's movies, Sunshine. A truly brillant first part, really, which takes a terrible turn 20-odd minutes before the end. The beginning still makes up for it -it's just too good.

Finally done unpacking after Ive moved to my new appartment. Media Centre got hooked up so I could relax on the couch and watch a movie.

I decided to watch Hot Rod. Realised Danny McBride was in it. Really going the distance to find all the stuff he's in after Ive started watching Eastbound and Down. Hot Rod was pretty funny. The humor felt a little bit like Napoleon Dynamite, but in its own way. The crazy stunts were awesome and the story in general is good.

When I first watched "The Signal" flick, was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was filmed entirely in the USA by three different directors (hence the three different short stories all tied together by the overall mysterious signal transmission/killer zombie theme). Even the opening scene/main title screen had that nostaglic 1970s horror flick vibe/feeling.

This film is also available for d/l on the U.S. PSN site as well.

It seems that the creators of the Saw franchise are running out of steam with the new-fangled traps and contraptions for victims to break free of. Saw 3D is the last one in the series for now. Now watching some of the earlier Saw films like Saw III and Saw IV push the envelope in terms of contraptions shown. The infamous reverse bear trap contraption from the original Saw flick (and Saw VI) makes a return apperance this time around. It seems that the props EFX folks had some fun in conjuring up some of those wicked & demented traps/contraptions.

3D Film factoid: Those first-run 3D digitally projected films being shown nowdays use what's known as passive 3D viewing. It's been said that current TV manufacturers will start making the newer 3D TV sets for the 2011 season with passive 3D viewing technology rather than using the current active-matrix 3D LCD-based viewing systems in place. Means not having to use batteries in the 3D glasses to view the 3D films at home.

Hooray for polarized lenses. Anything beats active shutter tech. That shit was ridiculous enough when Nvida tried it. As for Saw, I just hope the series dies and stays dead. The first was a masterpiece and one of the defining horror films of the decade. The sequels have just been increasingly ridiculous rubbish. It's a movie that should have stood alone.

As for my recent films I just watched Versus on Blu-Ray. Absolutely no reason to pick this up over the DVD as the picture quality is crap. Very soft, poor encoding on grain heavy scenes and just generally unimpressive visuals. As for the movie itself, it was alright. I haven't watched it since the original DVD release and I was interested in seeing how the Ultimate Cut looked. Overall a marked improvement, but on a second watch the lulls in action become extremely apparent and really make some parts drag on.

I watched Yoshiaki Kawajiri's rendition of Highlander. It was exactly what I was hoping for, Ninja Scroll as Highlander, and was basically as though the last 10 years of anime didn't happen. Good stuff.

Agreed. The concept is a good one, but the story can't be stretched very far without destroying the suspension of disbelief and descending into nonsense.

Let's also not forget that the sequels were not warranted. The original film was built as a brilliant one-shot story and only works as such. It favoured the story over the violence. Other films in the series just seem tacked on an cliche driven. Saw II was by far the worst of the three I've seen as it's about as paint-by-numbers as a movie can get.

I just watched the newly restored 150 minute cut of Metropolis on blu-ray. The only version I'd seen previously was the colourised mess with Queen music over it that was only about 90 minutes. Suffice to say this was an entirely different experience. The most recently reinstated footage (the 25 minutes taken from a deteriorating 16mm print found in 2008) is very poor quality, but the rest is amazing for a film that's 83 years old. There was very little soft focus used in the film, so the restored 35mm elements are sharp and detailed, and have been thoroughly cleaned. The music is a new orchaestral recording of the original score.

Metropolis is a visual masterpiece that inspired generations of SF writers and directors who followed. It's a key piece of cinematic history, which can now been seen in a version that's a mere three minutes shorter than the original German theatrical cut. It's also an entertaining way to spend two and a half hours. If you're not prejudiced against silent movies that are as theatrical as they are cinematic, I recommend it.

Sometimes it's good to be wrong.

I just watched the Dark Crystal streaming on netflix. I remember enjoying it a kid, but put it away and never returned to it. When it came up in conversation, I just blew if off as a weird kids movie.

It isn't that that assessment is wrong, but Dark Crystal is weird as in surreal, and visually it may take practical effects about as far as they can go. If your willing to sit down with a film that isn't necessarily fantastic and watch it as an organic, analog, practical effects bonanza, Dark Crystal may be a deeply rewarding experience. There are moments here that felt like someone trying to make a live action puppet version of Nausicaa. Viewed in that light, Dark Crystal is wonderful and probably without equal.

I recently picked up a 5 disc pack of Charles Bronson movies for $19 and worth every cent. Sure Bronson didn't make the best movies in the world but some of them are pretty good if you take them with a grain of salt. Transfers were adequate (for DVD) and the best of the 5 was '10 to Midnight'.

Sorry I missed this post drunknija24. I must admit I know nothing of the SNL sketches (I'm only guessing when I presume you mean Saturday Night Live. Is that where MacGruber has it's roots?).
