How many bullets...

Post by chempop »

...does one dodge in 1CC in any given game? Has anyone ever counted? Is there an easier way to find out? What game has the least or most bullets ever? Just curious if it's tens of thousands, or much less or more. Ridiculous, I know.

For what it's worth, most Touhou games have a graze counter and it tends to run in the several thousands if you aren't actively trying to hug bullets for score, or easily into the tens of thousands otherwise depending on the particular game. The Psyvariars feature a buzz counter with a similar order of magnitude (the Psyvariar 2 superplay hits 108k buzz), and both series have fairly dense patterns and are of average length.

It's only a narrow definition of dodging, of course, but I can't really think of any better way to get a good estimate... I'm sure there are other games that feature similar counters, but they don't spring to mind at the moment.

Don't forget in Psyvariar 2 you can graze a single bullet multiple times.

Well considering 90% of bullets in danmaku shmups have absolutely nothing to do with you, it might be less than you think.

I once counted bullets from Ikaruga bosses. The last one had around 8k I think.

I belive cave put about that futari had as many as 2000 bullets on screen at any one time ... I'm not sure, but considering you've got 76800 pixels on screen at 320*240, and knowing what some moments of futari are like, I wouldn't bet against it.

There's probably no way of easily counting it - I doubt any game actually counts bullets, and I bet there's various programming/display tricks would mean that even objects/sprites 'in use' - if a debug/test had this - at any one time would not necessarily match up with the number of individual bullets.

Dunno though - manic (over even near manic) shmups are just ridiculous - I'd be interested in the answer for something like tatsuijin though... anyone got a lot of time?

Many.

Perhaps even lots.

Least bullets ever? I guess something old where enemies don't shoot and the player is limited to 1 bullet; Space Invaders is close to this limit, and Centipede closer.

Counting bullets generated by enemies is a much easier to track statistic, from a code perspective anyway.

Too bad I didn't add to add this to XOP :P

This is an interesting quandary, but very vague. It depends on your definition of dodging - how close?

Hmm, I was think in terms of how many total bullets enter and exit the screen. If Mushi really has 2000 on screen at once I'd imagine the game to spit easily hundreds of thousands total, now granted a very small percent of those actually have to be dodged, but they all have to be avoided one way or another. Maybe I could watch a replay in slow motion and figure out a way to keep track of a rough estimate. Anyone want to help, lol

I can't be the only one who thought of the Tootsie Pop catchphrase when I read this topic...
