Songs From Your Favorite SEGE Genesis Games

Post by raigon50 »

So, a friend and I have decided to collab on making a remix album. All songs are remixes of SEGA Genesis games. I'm looking for games that have good, fun music to use. I'm not just talking shmups either (I just got a case of Deja Vu. I believe I've said that before.) just any game you like. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also, don't be naming off games like Sonic, Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, or Golden axe. Those games are givens, OBVIOUSLY we're going to use them.

Three off the top of my head... been a while since I posted about VGM with any enthusiasm, but I still love it.

Shinobi III / The Super Shinobi 2 - "My Dear D." The hammering basslines, equally violent and off-kilter drumming and passive/aggressive tone make it one of the most thumping, unique and finessed tunes to come out of the MD. Love those arpeggio-like melodies floating up out of the erratic percussion.

Thunder Force IV - "Downright Attack." This game is loaded with impressive synth-metal pieces; this one is not the catchiest but probably the grandest, progressing as it does from the almost staggering intro to a full-on gallop and back again.

EDIT: sorry, it's a shmup isn't it. But still, give this song a look - it's exceptionally well-developed, and could do with better sound quality.

EDIT V2.0: oh, you didn't actually rule out shooters. In that case I'd also mention Twilight Express from the second Battle Mania game. Catchy and aggressive as fuck. Love the sombre lead melody, shredding rhythm guitar sound and those punchy drums.

Gauntlet IV - "Transparent Obstacle." The scale of this song alone is pretty astonishing for its time. I don't really feel qualified to describe it beyond being simultaneously eerie and driving, and constantly building intensity with each new layer. The tight grooves underpinning it make for the funkiest soundtrack to sieging a satanic dungeon ever (bass slap).

Monster World IV, Shining Force, CRYING - excellent soundtracks all around, not just those particular tunes. Final Zone (FZ Senki Axis) gets an honourable mention for the mesmerising continue screen theme (didn't find it on YouTube), but I suppose it's the Sharp X68000 where it really feels at home. Also, Gynoug for the Stage 1 music.

According to the comments, it's from Stage 4 of 1941.
Besides, I suggest to correct the typo in the topic's title (might be difficult to search for as is).

Granada/Windy Avenue (2nd stage)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsXtvHx3tyg - this is the X68000 version
Hard-charging mid-tempo basslines and heavy power chords give this one a sense of urgency. Though the MD version is a step down in quality, nothing else gets lost in translation.

Shinobi III/Rush & Beat (Electric Demon)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0RYuv4ZbuI
A more aggressive take on Rolling Thunder 2 style jazz. I love how the intro creeps in slow for a couple seconds, then jolts into the furious bassline of the main song. While rather upbeat, it does have a note of danger. It's catchy stuff.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

The intense build up intro music from Splatterhouse 3

Same thing with Splatterhouse 2

I like Splatterhouse, OKAY?
Too bad this new one looks like a turd...

Another vote for Langrisser. The soundtrack is epic.

Phantasy Star IV has some excellent soundtrack as well:

Zero Wing's intro and stage 1 music are pretty catchy. So is the tune from the far-right stage of Elemental Master. And while it might be outside of what you want, being a Sega CD game, Prince of Persia stage 1 is mesmerizing.

Prayer of the tragic queen (I think?) from Castlevania Bloodlines and maybe Iron blue intention.

Soleil/Crusader of The Centy awesome music in that game, same composer as the Langrisser games.

CRYING
I would definitely agree with this. Pretty much all the songs from Bio-hazard Battle are great.

Yeah, I feel ya, but we (my friend and I) agreed to not do any obvious SoR songs because they have already been remixed to death. I will probably remix some on my own though, so you're not out of luck.

Alisia Dragoon has some top-notch music - so does Gunstar Heroes. Almost pointless listing specific tracks from them.
Star Cruiser (was also released on various Japanese computers, but who cares about them) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df05c0kYryE
Exile too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88UqYdQcgLs
Castle of Illusion has 'medley' written all over it.
Also want to back up suggestions for Bio-hazard Battle, Gynoug and Phantasy Star IV.

Finally, Streets of Rage doesn't have good music (and is only a middling bmup). That's right, I'm throwing down.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

There are some tracks on the Vectorman 2 soundtrack that I like.

I like this Dynamite Headdy track as well.
