R-Types

Post by Accutron »

Bought a copy off eBay a couple weeks ago, and it showed up yesterday. I think I'm in love. I haven't played the original R-Type since it was new in the arcades, other than running it in MAME on my prehistoric iBook (I like to call it Chunky Mode). I've never played R-Type II outside of MAME. The controls, level design, artwork, music, it's all beautiful. After playing RTF and Super R-Type, the originals feel like they're moving at warp speed. Both games are true masterpieces.

They're fab aren't they! I will ALWAYS have a soft spot for R-Type.

R-types is pure gold, no doubt.

it's a real shame to hear manic fans constantly deride the series though. R-Type is still the genre's crown jewel.

They are fab. And to think, until only a few months ago when I got this, the closest thing I'd got to these games was the Master System R-Type and SNES Super R-type.

I'm a HUGE manic fan and the first 2 games that I played on my horizontal cab were Progear and R-Type.

I'd been wanting a good home conversion of R-Type for a long time, but was unaware of R-Types until fairly recently. I had thought the only solid home version was for the PCE, and well, I don't have a PCE. I take it the versions on R-Types are arcade-perfect?

I just discovered the snazzy enemy guide with point values :D

Some slight resolution issues; the PSX version doesn't have quite as much vertical space, which is why you can either choose the semi-transparent HUD or the opaque HUD+wobble mode.

The PSX version of R-Type 1 can't add any better than the original arcade did though. :| (Hence the blurb in the manual about arcade bugs being recreated or whatever it says.)

Yeah, the first thing I did was move the hud. I noticed it has a setting for wobble mode, but I haven't tried it out yet.

I was unaware that it had scoring bugs...arcade-imperfect eh?

Yeah; if you compare the end-of-game score breakdown to your overall total you'll often notice they don't quite match.

The best place I've found to actually witness the bug in action is the second level boss. If you milk the snakes a while and then destroy the boss right as the very last snake (before the boss would time out) is coming out and watch your score carefully, you'll find you'll have less points after destroying the boss than you did before. I used to have a crummy movie of this happening on my site but I don't have the space for it anymore...

Please, let's not start with the whole "damn this is fun and good but someone is evil and dislikes it", if i give you the idea (nothing personal, of course, peace love and understanding  ). In one thing R-type is surely fundamental: the invention of the "maze approach" to shmups.Modern "manics" (bullet-curtain or other japanese-based terms are better, i think) do with bullet patterns what R-Type with scenery.
"The only desire the Culture could not satisfy from within itself was one common to both the descendants of its original human stock and the machines [...]: the urge not to feel useless."

i picked this up for a few quid a couple of weeks back but not really put any time into it yet. as an r-type virgin i've enjoyed the few plays i've put into it and i have got to the 3rd stage once, but i'm finding it seriously tough and a little unfair. i'm going to dip into it occasionally until it clicks as i know that eventually it'll be something that i can really enjoy. i find often with many pieces of entertainment that the ones that i'm not too keen on to start with are the ones that last the longest. i mean look at patti smith, japanese films and mushrooms :) all of these at some point were held with nothing less that contempt by myself, and now i'm more than passionate.

and to anyone who thinks that mushrooms aren't entertainment.... i pity you...

Rtype is everything but unfair. You can always recover from any re-start point. The reason I think you may find it unfair is because, unlike many other shooters, rtype leaves little room for improvisation. You always have to be at the right place at the right time. If you want a little more "freedom" in rtype then give a try to Rtype Leo.

i agree with you, but was making more of a dissapointed observation than purposely throwing flame-bait into the water.
