That's kind of lame. That seems like it would make the game unbalanced.

It does seem like characters are unbalanced. I was never able to get far using Death or Strength, but I made it all the way to Tower the moment I switched to Fortune.

I don't think character imbalance is a big deal in multiplayer. You can choose the same character if you want a fair match and different characters if you want a handicap. They all perform the same on your own side; so even if you're forced to use an unfamiliar character it shouldn't have any impact on your play style. For single player, I assume everybody just uses the good players (kinda like how everybody uses the same ships in the RF games).

Having said that, some characters are undoubtedly better than others, and it does make a noticable difference. The good characters pile everything into a few columns, forcing their opponents to spread everything out before they can start chaining. Black Pierrot is the worst in this respect, although Fortune is pretty similar IIRC.

I haven't touched this game in ages. Is there a way to play this online, and if so, do people actually play it? I got demotivated after hitting a wall in single player, but the couple times I played this with people at shmup meets it was a lot of fun.

It just seems like it would basically press everyone to use the same character in single player. I would have figured there to be more variation than just the way blocks pile up for the opponent. Imbalance in multiplayer doesn't make much of a difference for me because everyone I play is terrible. I mostly just play survival with rounds in adventure and challenge occasionally. My MVS puts it in English anyway.

... oh god, you're in English mode? Get ye to Japanese mode if at all possible, just to save your eardrums.

I'm never going to lose to you! I'm pretty sure I'm stuck in english mode. I'm fairly certain my MVS lacks the ability to switch regions.
