Shipments to US other than boat stopped?!?!?!

Post by GaijinPunch »

I posted this at Assembler as well. Information overload.

Is this a Japan only thing? Starts on the 17th according to my post office. Basically I can send packages only over 16oz and only by boat. Letters and everything else are stopped. Ass Sphincter says what?!

Can you some of you Euro people go to your post office and check? If you have would-be-EMS items waiting in Japan, you better have your buyer send them.

It's due to the terrorist threat from last week, the package from Yemen I'd say. It's on the Japan Post site so it's real. Only affects the US.

PDF of the announcement: http://www.post.japanpost.jp/whats_new/ ... 02_c01.pdf

The announcement says only articles 16 ounces and over are affected. You can still send stuff (like letters) under 16 ounces as usual (airmail, EMS, whatever). Still dumb, though.

I cannot locate anything about this "ban" stateside. The only thing I can locate is an airline that serves Yemen not carrying packages to the USA.

The sheet they gave me is different... the Engrish is of course very vauge.

"Only more than 453g (16oz) and post-payment of postage are acceptable." The Japanese isn't much better. But, it does *seem* to be parcels.

Even if that's right, you have to convince the Japanese postal system. That'd be about as easy as a chihuahua fucking a donkey.

So my mom-in-law in Japan had just sent 3 boxes of stuff to us in the USA last week. Will she expect to have these returned to her soon? My KOF Skystage for PSP was in one of those boxes.

Interesting. I imagine this would affect stores like NCSX with their shipments, wouldn't it? Might be waiting a little while longer than expected for DFK 360 if that's the case...

It doesn't affect parcels already sent, or those sent tomorrow presumably. Japan Post expects this deal to last about a month. I'm just glad I've no reason to post anything to the US.

Hmph. I just paid to have some records sent via EMS. And I don`t even like EMS, the crap never gets delivered and I have to go to the post office and stand in line to get it. Maybe they`ll ship before the shutdown. If not, is there any chance that I could nullify the current threat by threatening to doubly blow something up unless shipments continue without interruption?

I was wondering why Celga was talking about JPPS restricting parcels to the US, but then saying that it won't effect their EMS/PAL shipments. I don't think ncsx or amiami will be inconvenienced by this, just regular citizens. I could be wrong, just making a general assumption based on that Celga posted that this will not harm their courier service.

This whole situation seems a bit over the top. Japan don't delay my DFK shipment! Pretty please!

I get the impression commercial items will be ok, i.e. those sent by a proper registered company.

Import companies almost always have a deal cut w/ private carriers for reduced shipping. Japan Post doesn't do this (and most non-privates AFAIK) so ordering from small mom & pop shops or dickheads like me and you're screwed.

EDIT: Can someone living in Europe go and inquire at their post office?

Yea I felt commercial wouldn't be messed with, but wasn't sure. Poor Gaijinpunch and Rancor are kind of screwed though. At least there is still snail speed boat shipping.

I'd cope with the slow speed if it were reliable, which it isn't.

Americans don't constitute much of my business... :? Since I've started selling stuff, I've honestly only sent maybe 3 packages to the US... Seems the vast majority of orders come from Scandanavia and western Europe.

How much more does it cost someone to use something like FedEx for international shipments as opposed to Japan Post EMS?

I see, must be the garbage economy we've been in as of late. I'd like to finish off my touhou and doujin game collection but the cash just isn't there. What little pocket money I do have is put saving for pcb/ports. If the economy stables a bit I'll give ya a ring Rancor, I'd kill for one of those shooting magazines too.

Usually more than double. For example I can send one game via SAL for $6.00. The same game via EMS will cost $14.00.

I have a lot of people that will claim otherwise.

Same here -- Europeans for the win.

He was asking what is a private carrier compared to Japan post. The answer is: Fucking ridiculously more expensive.

I'm in the USA and most of my goods are sold to Europeans.

I think every good PCB or kit I sold went to France.

Pastries and the used PCB market. Is there anything they don't have?

So if we just tell the terrorists they win, can we stop playing the game and let things go back to normal?

Oh yeah - I misread that. If EMS is $15.00 then UPS/FEDEX will be $30.00 at least. This is for 1 CD in a jewel case stuffed inside a padded envelope. I remember checking their prices a while back to see if they were a viable option, and it's like they don't even try to compete.

Ok same here in France.Acces restricted to USA/South America
On a domectic fly they can't take Personal Effects,Household goods and goods more than 453g

But,Chronopost(EMS) do send all the stuff above with cargo fly, they just can't guarantee the delays.

I wonder if this is why there was extra security on the shinkansen this past week. It's hard enough finding a trash can in this place but now I find these cardboard sheets over everything telling me to dispose of my bombs elsewhere.

Japan is a bit of a worry-wort country but is there some specific reason they're freaking out over this terrorist threat compared to all of the others in recent years?
