Thanks to the people who offered to help us out by joining the mod team - we got quite a selection of people to pick from and may add another shortly (this person would be from the names we already have so no need to offer again), but for now Ghegs and jiji have been added.

What I am wondering is this: are the mods even useful?

Is anyone trying to post child porn or whatever? I am just asking because I recently started a forum with no mods. There are only 54 people there now, but I haven't felt the need to edit anyone's posts yet, or delete/lock threads or do any other such nasty things (I am the one and only benevolent admin).

Well someone posted a direct link to iso's recently which was directly against the forum rules. Simps like Blastaway has thankfully been kicked out for scamming people, and sometimes flaming in threads has got a little out of hand, so yes I think we do need mods.

I like the font you use in your reviews.

How did you take the screenshots on your site?

There is DEFINATELY a need for mods on this site; and that's all I'm going to say about that.

I think we have too many moderator's already.

Hopefully these new ones won't go through that "new mod" period where they start editing posts excessively and unnecessarily.

I don't see why anyone would want to edit someone else's posts.

Posts are opinions. It's totally uncool to mess with someone's opinions. Or put words in their mouth.

Actually that's not quite true - Dylan has left the mod team, and nullstar is leaving. Thunder Force is busy with work - poor old Zach isn't able to read all the posts from 900+ people all on his own ;-)

Lets say your forum rules prohibit links to ROMs and ISOs. Someone links anyway at the end of an otherwise valid post. Do you remove the link or delete what they said entirely?

Your rules say people shouldn't insult others based on race. Someone does. Do you delete that post entirely, screwing up the read of the thread, or edit out the particular line in question?

There are times when it's a valid thing to do, depending on the kind of forum you want to have.

Personally I like having the moderators around. There's always _someone_ either posting those links, or selling bootleg pcbs, or just being an outright trolling ass. You know, nobody likes cops, but imagine how shitty things would be without them...

Exactly, and this forum is a helluva lot less friendly then it used to be-just PM Malc sometime and ask his opinion on the matter.

And I agree with CMoon-it is always nice to know that the mods are there. People can gripe about "overmoderation", and other mispercieved mod actions all they want, but the bottom line is that mods wouldn't even be necessary if people didn't do stupid crap like provide Rom links, make elitist insults and flame other forum members, etc. And trust me icycalm, I've been a forum member for over 2 years now and have seen and personally experienced enough of this nonsense to last me an eternity. So as far as I'm concerned, the more mods on here, the better.

I guess I am new to the modding game and I haven't given it much thought.

Removing illegal links sounds like the right thing to do.

As for the second situation, if someone insults another poster based on race, I would post right under and tell the guy (in public, not via PM) to not do it again otherwise he will be IP banned...

Does it help?

we definitly need more mods, this is a good move.

good moderators help any forum on the internet become a happier, more pleasant place to visit and post in.

personally, i thnk the current modding situation here could even do with 2 more mods, and a stricter policy in general on toleration.

one thing that is really misssing is a formal warning/banning process, which in my opinion should be added to the "forum rules" sticky.

Eg 2 warnings then your banned, for example.

Why is a team of 10 people needed for that on a forum that has less than 100 or so regulars? And only 2 forums of which get more than 100 posts in it a day?

I don't really care mind you... but it just strikes me as odd.

Ehr, as bloodf says, only Zach will remain, so it's just a switch of team. (How about reading the messages though, ahem?)

[1]where do you get 10 from?

i count 5: zach, jiji, ghegs, nullstar, thunderforce [listed on the main index page].

[2] on any forum surely its better multiple mods rather than too few. plus you are not thinking about the time committment, by having multiple mods each individual does less overall time committment, and also can do a better job modding.

You'd be surprised just how many people /actually/ come here from the 900 registered, many of the old faces still read the forum at the very least, but choose to stay hidden, and I'm not naming them.

If one person had nothing better to do all day, that one person could mod this forum. In reality, we all have dayjobs or school, certain times of day we use the net and so on - well most of us anyway. If you rely on a tiny (say two) number of mods, its more than likely that it won't get looked at even once in a day - so you pick say 5 active ones, so that nobody is under pressure to constantly monitor the forum, people go on holidays and there's no problem, and they can just have a quick read every now and then.

There's your reason! Oh, and we get more PM complaints than you might think too, sometimes.

I don't think we have too many mods. It's better to have a little bit more than necessary because we all have our own lives. Let's say we have 10 moderators on the list, are you going to expect all 10 of them to be on the forums scanning through the forums making sure nothing is out of ordinary? No. Like I said, we all have our own lives, so they will occasionally pop in at different times on any given day. This is just a wise way of balancing things out when it comes to moderation, if three moderators aren't online... Then there are several others that can do the duty when three moderators aren't able to do it.

Better safe than sorry, I say.

Also keep in mind that having lots of mods lets you not be short handed when one of them lets it go to their head & abuse thier mod powers, and they have to be let go.

Running a community of any size is a tough and thankless job. So, many thanks to the old team[s] (and advance thanks to the new team) for doing a good job, and keep it up.

Congrats to all the new mods, who all demonstrated they are willing to put their time into ensuring a bright future for this site.

Through their diligent actions, this site will hopefully remain a place that caters to a pleasant amount of hardcore discussion (including the new addition of shmup development) while at the same time being newbie-friendly to all those just entering the genre for the first time :)

Welcome guys to the rockstar lifestyle of unpaid volunteer work :P

I'll still be here with Zach as mods. Just going through a busy patch with my (real) job in recent weeks, but I'm now trying to find time again to be here (and play more shmups!).
