According to Steam forums, PC version is once again completely unplayable. No big deal, I was only interested in that arena shmup minigame anyway.

Re: Call Of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360/PS3/PC)
Went to (one of the many) midnight releases in my city and picked up my copy (PS3 version).
I haven't played it yet, as I went home and straight to bed as I had to get up for work in like 6 hours...
I'm too old to wait outside in below 0 weather for games haha
IGN gave it an 8.5 I believe, so it seems solid, but it's still Treyarch. No matter how much they take from Infinity Wards games they still can't seem to manage that stretch for greatness. Not much of a fan of World War stuff, I really like the "Modern" warfare games myself. ALso, I know there is already a topic for PSN names and the like but I think I'll through mine out incase anyone wants to play:

Just about to head home from work and have a copy in my bag to fire up that I picked up at lunchtime.
Edit: Funny though as I'm actually more excited about Guwange tomorrow and although I have Black Ops, I don't feel as though I got swept up in any hype. I went to HMV in the UK and traded in MOH and paid £7.99 for it so more a case of buy now and save (MOH was a freebie)

Played it for half an hour between baby cries, so it doesn't mean much, but this is going to be amazing.

Well I hope you gents have fun.
Personally this will just be another endless FPS game coming between my friends and higher education with shmups. I get stuck playing FPS games for hours at friends houses for hours. I guess I'll have to write off the whole next year of get togethers to this game...*sigh*. I just see this as another biscuit in the mouth of the FPS harlot killing the arcade genre.

Reminds me of the time when I went to an internet cafe in Cyprus and saw four kids playing Call of Duty side by side on PCs. Or the time when someone opened an arcade with 2D Shooters in Southampton UK and all the local kids ignored it and went to the internet cafe downstairs and played Call of Duty. The arcade closed soon after. This was only 2 or 3 years ago.

I meant no disrespect to the people who enjoy FPS games.
I'll give the game an honest chance when I go over to my friend's parents' house.

I think you can't blame the industry for making a game people want to buy and play.
I'm a big fan of everything classic gaming but one must admit that within the FPS genre, the last 2 COD games did an excellent job at giving the player an addictive game with high production values. Is it so called sophisticated entertainment? Perhaps not. Is it fun? Hell yes.

Re: Call Of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360/PS3/PC/Wii)
I have this for the PC. I think its fun. Looks good and runs great (some have issues). With that being said. While i want to go back and play it some more, or finish up that next level. I wonder why no one gets tired of seeing FPS. People complain that you can credit feed a shmup and beat it in 30 minutes or game a is the same thing as game b. How are FPS not any different? You can usually save whenever you want. If you die you just reload your last save or checkpoint. Sure they are hours longer but its still the same concept.
If you really think about it, what changes in an FPS aside from the graphics? Hardly anything. You're memorizing single player formations just like you would in a shmup. The only real difference is Multiplayer. Yes, I understand multiplayer is very fun but yet after 100s of FPS people still clamor for that MP experience that was found in the 99 games before it. Ok. So its a newer game with a newer engine but you're still firing the same guns and hiding behind "the same" buildings etc etc etc.
When COD12 comes out, people will go gaga over it. I dont know. I think I just seriously hate games.

What's the big difference between the Infinity Ward and Treyarch titles? I've played a few and sure don't notice anything different.
Re: Call Of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360/PS3/PC/Wii)
Agreed. It all boils down to trends and what the majority of people like. Some of my favorite games are FPS's, but lately I'd have to say most of them don't really appeal to me, much like the recent CoD games; however, I can easily agree they do a great job with the games as far as production, fluid controls, and great multiplayer. I don't plan on getting it, but I would be lying if I didn't want to play it a bit.KindGrind wrote:I think you can't blame the industry for making a game people want to buy and play.

It sees the return of the M14 in multiplayer...albeit with pistol grip...so it can't be all bad. That being said, I'll wait a while. Between PFX2, Toy Soldiers, and the upcoming Apache: Air Assault, I'll be busy for a bit.

Re: Call Of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360/PS3/PC/Wii)
Played online for 3 hours tonight so I'll pos a few impressions:
- Definitely feels like CoD4: MW to me. Treyarch did a decent job of making the controls feel right at home with MW(2) players, although the gun recoil still doesn't feel right, especially when hip firing.
- The maps are nice and big, which I love and feel it helps discourage camping.
- Killstreaks only go up to 11, so obviously no nuke, which again, discourages camping. I mean you'll always have those people who think that K/D ratio means something but for some reason getting a Nuke was probably the be all and end all of some peoples dreams
- The Dogs which are killsteak 9 I believe scare the crap out of me everytime I see them.
- The RC Car is only a 3 kill streak which is cool but they actually have very poor controls and that takes away from the fun imo.
- The game has been out for less than 24 hours and some of my friends have been playing since midnight...
Yes, these guys have been playing for well....23 hours now and have not slept...missed school/work just for a game. I find this somewhat sad.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: Call Of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360/PS3/PC/Wii)
Just personal preference really. I honestly feel IW makes better games all around: they innovate new features and their games just feel more solid in the design and gameplay than what Treyarch put out. All Treyarch seems to be doing as of these past couple games is take what IW makes and then adds some more stuff in and calls it a day. They just play it a bit too safe when it comes to making their own game.junkeR wrote:What's the big difference between the Infinity Ward and Treyarch titles? I will give it to Treyarch though... they've come a long way. CoD3 was shit, period. I really gave that game a chance, but it was the worst game I've ever pre-ordered and really soured me. WaW was way better (it was based entirely off IW's engine and features from CoD4), but I ultimately became really bored with the multiplayer for some reason. It certainly wasn't the setting, as CoD2 is one of my all time favorite online FPS games. It just didn't hold me like IW's CoD games did. MW2 blew it out of the water when it dropped.
My copy of Black Ops is waiting in the mailbox while I'm at work today, so I haven't played it yet, but it looks like from what I'm reading so far, Treyarch has done a great job on this one. All everyone is talking about with regards to MW2 now that BO is out, is how broken the multiplayer was. Well, maybe it was, but damned if it wasn't fun and addicting to play. I'm sad that 3rd Person Team Tactical didn't make the playlists though. It was a nice change of pace from the standard fare.
Re: Call Of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360/PS3/PC/Wii)
Been playing the campaign. Some four missions in, I think. It's fun, nothing wrong with it.
Also played some Nazi Zombies. Round 6 is the furthest me and my buddy can get. We get the power on and then we get slaughtered in the auditorium.

Re: Call Of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360/PS3/PC/Wii)
I just finished the campaign on normal difficulty. There's a lot to like about it. The plot really nails the cold war paranoia and is far more coherant than the MW2 campaign (although most things are more coherant than that, including the Teletubbies and Salvador Dali). It doesn't have the epic sweep of MW2's homage to Red Dawn or the taut torn-from-the-headlines atmosphere of MW, but it never gets dull. Every couple of levels you're switching time period, theatre, or gameplay style.
The bulk of the missions feel very familiar, perhaps too much so. Treyarch try some new things, but seem a bit hesitant about it. There's a great level where you monitor a fireteam on the ground from a Blackbird overhead. You issue orders and every time they engage the enemy it zooms down to ground level and you join in the action. It works very well, but it's all over by the time it's run through the tutorial for issuing orders. I would have liked to see that idea expanded upon. Aside from that, other changes in pace including driving/piloting various vehicles. There are also a couple of levels that force a faster pace than usual for CoD and push you to run-and-gun with dual-wielded weapons. On the whole it's a solid, entertaining campaign, but it lacks in truly memorable moments. There's nothing here as memorable as the the nuke going off in MW, the ghilli suit sniper missions, or fighting through DC at night after an EMP has knocked out all the electronics in MW2. The campaign in Black Ops does have one big plot twist towards the end, but I saw it coming a mile away. This is Treyarch clawing their way almost up to the standard of Infinity Ward, but they don't manage to set a new standard on their own terms.
I've played a few rounds of the two zombie maps. The one in the Pentagon that unlocks after you finish the campaign is a riot. Playing as JFK vs the undread horde is priceless, especially since he's comstantly coming out with twisted versions of his most famous quotes. I haven't tried any multiplayer modes yet.

I thought it was pretty good, but I've been calling it Balls to Booty: Black Cocks for a few days with my buddies.
ANYWAY, played the hell out of the multiplayer with 3 other buddies tonight via split screen. Played for a good 3 or more hours, and I still want more. YOU CAN THROW AXES NOW AND IT IS TOO KEWL.

I had to look up how to unlock Dead Ops Arcade. It has one of those stupidly obscure unlock methods that you'd never figure out yourself. It's an excellent clone of Smash TV, but takes a long time to become challenging. I reached stage 21 on my first attempt and scored 1,341,375.
