Definitely Twinkle Tale. Not surprised Prof commented on this already; I remember we're both fans of it. If you have $ for only one 100$ MD game, do get this one.

Also, Undeadline is really, really hardcore. If you're into that you won't have problems with any other shmup on your list.

As a fellow MD collector I can tell you that patience will be your best friend here. You can score amazing games for the price you want to pay if you wait a bit. There is a lot of variance on prices when you look at the top games. Panorama Cotton, for example, can be between bought 100 and 200$, depending on condition, completeness, etc. From time to time, these games spike and slump for no apparent reason. Wait for good timing and buy the stuff. You won't regret it :)

Super Fantasy Zone is very nice. The EU version can be played on US systems without any modification. Seems to run at the correct speed, as well. It also has some incredible music.

So many good MD shmups, I've collected most of the US ones, but the elusive imports could take some time and cash to collect.

I really want to play them on real hardware, so I just ordered this:

the FM sound support for Master Sytem roms is the icing on the cake.

I second that Super Fantasy Zone recommendation, such a sweet game :) Also Thunder Force III, top notch.

What is the Mega Drive's best controller? I have some knock off ones that are rubbish, and a pair of the wireless which are alright. Is there anything better?

The official 6-button pad is excellent, and mostly identical to the Saturn's. There are some compatibility issues with certain games, but if you hold the MODE button when powering on, the system treats it as a 3-button.

If I remember correcty, the only shmup that has this MODE button issue is Forgotten Worlds.
If you don't press MODE while turning on the console you get a GAME OVER right after starting a credit. Now that's what I call a hard one, huh?

Confirmed, Forgotten Worlds has compatability problems with the six-button and has to use the Mode button to prevent the immediate Game Over problem after starting a game.

Also, when playing Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits, pressing the Mode button in Robotron 2084 allows four buttons to be used for firing:

Y=left, Z=up, B=down, C=right.

Mode button also changes the Defender II (Stargate) control scheme from the 3-button version that is a partial duplicate of the Atari 2600 Defender controls for smart bomb (have to descend all the way down and press the C button for smart bomb, otherwise C button is hyperspace):

X=thrust, Y=reverse, Z=smart bomb, A=fire, B=inviso, C=hyperspace.

But then again both Defender and Defender II also support left/right for reverse, tap same direction again for thrust, so having X and Y as thrust and reverse is somewhat redundant.

dude Genesis shmups are ridiculous. You'll never bump into a shitty shmup game on the genesis. The worst you'll get is a decent shmup. My fav shmup on the Genesis has to be MUSHA or Darius 2. Gaiares is mad good as well, also I've been playing Gley Lancer quite a bit. I can go on but god damn. Truxton as well.

Surely you can "bump" into / find a lousy shmup on the Genesis / Mega-Drive.

Many consider "XDR" as a bad game - it has many flaws ( graphic etc. ) , but I consider it
.... well ok.

Sol Feace / Sol Deace also get´s not much love.

Two games I won´t spend any money on are

Divine Sealing ( great - naked anime chicks - never seen someting on the Internet   )

and worst of the worst

Earth Defense / Earth Defend .

you obviously havnt played xenon 2, looks nice but the ship moves way to slow and is as fun as watching paint dry, i hate it with a passion due to this been the first vert shmup i played on the console as a kid, it scared me so much that every other shmup game on the shelf or review i encountered thereafter was quickly dismissed as trash and quickly put back on the shelf of the page was turned. As i was a young kid and when kids form an opinion that they dont like something they can be very narrow minded and stubborn to change. And so apart from a couple of horis shmups were an unknown quantity untill recently.

Why couldn't the I of picked up Musha!

Hmm I wonder how many bad shmups either euro shmup or those god arwfull modern "Hello World" shmups have scared other kids and adults for life as it was the first shmup they had the missfortune to play

Ah... I remember Sol-Deace, its one of those shmups that seemed kind of unfair in certain portions of the game other than that it wasn't bad at all, haven't played the others you mentioned.

Edit: Actually I have played that one, and I will agree, the makers should of done something about the ship speed. Problem with alot of shmups is ship speed though. With certain games like Gradius, power ups really save your ass in that regard.

If you want something irritatingly hard I recommend Thunder Force II. I can't beat that despite putting lives to max, normal mode and using all six continues.
Even TF IV was less difficult. :?

Ranger-X is a RnR (Run n Gun) mech game. Not to be confused with shmups, its a genre of its own.

I have owed RangerX since I was a kid, I'm a huge fan! I wouldn't exactly call it a Run and Gun though, too much boosting around in the air for that! Got some simple elements of Blaster Master, and beautiful colors and backgrounds.

I'm happy this thread is getting so much love. Ever since getting Elemental Master a year or so ago I've remembered how awesome 16-bit games can be. Just a couple weeks ago I grabbed a copy of Gaiares and it is stellar - I'm now on a hunt to really fill in my collection with top games. I'm having a blast learning about all the great offerings that the Genny/MD has, and hearing what games are favorites out of the massive quantity of titles.

Right now I'm most interested in affordable titles ($10-$60), there are tons of options but I've taken interest to these in particular.

Gynoug/Wings of Wor
Crying/Bio-Hazard Battle
Undead Line
Hellfire
V-V/Grindstormer
Dangerous Seed

There are about 10 more that I'm also interested in, but can wait. I really appreciate the feedback from everyone so far, feel free to discuss or add suggestions.

Right now I'm struggling with stage 4 in Gaiares, I can get to what I think is right before the level boss, but its taken a bit of practice to get this far. What an epic game, quickly becoming one of my all time favorite horis. I can't wait to see Gynoug and Crying, but I want to savor this journey back in time.

It looks like you already have some of the best ones.

As far as the list of what you don't have, Undead Line and Grindstormer are the only must-haves, IMO. Undead Line for its awesome soundtrack, huge bosses and Elemental Master-like gameplay. Grind stormer for its huge sprites, firepower, and again, huge bosses. The rest are decent for sure, but these two certainly hold up the best these days.

I hqven't had much experience with import MD shmups though asides from UL, so I wouldn't doubt if there were a few more Jap-only releases that are must-haves.

Right now I'm struggling with stage 4 in Gaiares, I can get to what I think is right before the level boss, but its taken a bit of practice to get this far.
So this means you can get to the X-shaped zone with the snake that fires the five-way spread shot?

Not to derail the entire thread, but here are a few tips for the game in general:

1. E-smash is the most useless weapon in the game, period, I can't find any useful offensive use at all, so don't get it and if it's taken by mistake then dump it for any other weapon at the next available non-E-smash TOZable enemy.
2. Stage 2 snake midboss gives V-laser. TOZ it three times to get max V-laser. It shoots through walls. Get rid of it right before the boss battle by TOZing one of the G-beam enemies that fly in and fly out rapidly. It makes that boss battle take less than one minute.
3. On stage 3, only power up the T-missile to 2nd level firepower. It's less powerful than 3rd level but then again the second level firing rate more than compensates for that. Furthermore, the missiles emerging from both sides of the ship make the diagonal fired missiles of the 3rd level T-missle entirely unnecessary. Even the guillotines just before the 3rd level boss go down that much faster when fired upon with 2nd level T-missile.
4. Stage 4 is relatively straightforward, just don't accidentally TOZ a missile with level 2 T-missile because there's no way to power down in the game.
5. The X-shaped zone is best navigated using Low ship speed. Wait in the safe area of each firing pattern until the spread fires, then just use a small tap to dodge it. Return to the middle and repeat, going to the next safe area for the next pattern iteration until the pattern is done. When the screen starts scrolling again, switch to Max ship speed for the stage 4 boss battle.

I won't post spoilers for stage 5 or stage 6 except for on request. (Furthest I've reached is the stage 6 boss, but hope these help anyway.)

Let me correct myself, I did some minor research when I was looking for more games to DL. It is supposedly a split-off of the genre, but I guess you can also say its rather the same thing as well "taking place on foot". Personally I would note it as quite different because of the environment of the game which makes you think to yourself that its a distinguished 2D side scroller.

Yeah, it's hard to really classify the game. I'd say it's kinda a mix of genres. Just thought it was kinda funny the way you worded that...Probably kinda rude on my part :|

Well thanks to some members here I've got a storm of Genesis games waiting to be played and more on the way. Just had one go at the following:

Wings of Wor - pretty cool, not quite as good as I was as expecting, but had fun and made it pretty far, the level looked all biological and with veins and crap, very cool.
Phelios - Was surprisingly entertained by this despite how primitive it was. Maybe I'm just a sucker for mythology, found certain parts quite difficult and I was playing on easy.
Hellfire - OMG this game is f-ing great! Had to stop because I got a call, but I am very impressed with the first 5 minutes, can't wait to see how crazy it gets!

I'll keep posting opinions as I try out more games, again, thanks for all the recommendations guys!

Maybe you guys can help me out on this one. I've been contemplating picking up a few of the import only MD shmups recently and the one title I'm most interested in is Slap Fight. However, I noticed that the one lone copy up on ebay right now is a BIN for... $195.99! That sounds inflated but still, is this one of those pricey $100+ MD games? What's the average price for a complete copy?

Guess emulation might be the only way to go with this one.
