Aircraft shooters similar to Sky Target (ie, w/boss fights)?

Post by dave4shmups »

Man, I just love this game! OK, so it hasn't aged very well, but I love the fact that there are bosses at the end of each stage. IMO, we need more flight shooters like this, and less flight sims.

I think it's either Top Gun: Fire At Will, or Top Gun Combat Zones that has boss fights/stages. Anyone know of any others?

Gotcha, but I'm talking about Aircraft shooters, not space ones (just changed the thread title to reflect that)-although that is one awseome game!

How about Saturn Wing Arms, any bosses in that game?

The original Air Combat has some 1-target missions that could be taken as boss fights.

Try Omega Boost too. Mechas rule.

I know this hardly has "boss fights" but you should definitely consider the Ace Combat series. Oh, and one of the AirForce Delta games (possibly Airforce Delta Strike, and you can unlock the popular shmup planes too!) might have a boss fight or two, depending on whether you think of it as a boss or not.

Wing Arms was awesome. Emphasis on was. Time has not been kind to it at all.

If needed, I can produce videos showing just how poorly it has aged :(

But yes, it has boss fights....sort of.

What about the two Top Gun games I mentioned? I remember reading somewhere that Top Gun Fire At Will has boss stages, don't know about Combat Zones, though.

I don't recall Fire at Will having bosses, but it's been a good few years since I played it.

It was bland enough that I never played the second one

Did Captain Skyhawk for the NES have boss fights at the end of the levels? It's been a very long time since I have played...

After Burner on SMS has boss battles at the end of stages 6, 12 , and 18. Unfortunately once you reach stage 12, the game's difficulty shoots through the ceiling- missiles are VERY HARD to evade, and your continues are taken away, leaving you with maybe a 0.00023% of finishing the game. This is the only version of AB with boss battles AFAIR.

Night Striker has boss battles as well- it's more Space Harrier type, but you fly a futuristic aircraft that transforms into a car/bike/etc.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Top Gun on the NES had boss fights in it too (for example, at the end of level 2 you have to take out a carrier), although I rarely, if ever, made it any of them. Mostly because I sucked at the landing and refueling parts.

Deadly skies man on the dreamcast aka air force delta absolutely brilliant game. just change the handling to advanced and the plane is brilliant.

as for bosses yes/no

You have to take out some bad ass general dude, massive b2 bomber prototypes, armed train transports, forts, fly inside a moutain base, locate submarines in the arctic.

32 planes to pick from, graphics are good nice music highly recommended game. iits long aswell and hard.

Starlancer yeah its space flight style but you should get it. 10/10

Thanks for that info on SMS After Burner-I had no idea about the boss battles!

Well as far as difficulty goes, I'm having quite a bit of trouble with Saturn Sega Ages After Burner II-the problem is control. If you use the analog stick on the 3D controller, you can move the F-14 around a lot easier, but it's hard as heck to get a missle lock on anything. If you use the regular Saturn controller, it's much easier to get missle locks, but you some of the control that you get with the analog stick.

Diabollokus, thanks for that info on DC Air Force Delta! Most sites rate the game as average, but I'll have to give it a look now! Is AirForce Delta Storm on the XBOX similar, in terms of gameplay?

Would PS1 Warhawk count?

Yeah, I've seen the reviews of air force delta, I think its the control system people hate. Theres 2 types basic and advanced.

one of the complaints is the handling of the aircraft once you change the controls and start to get better planes the game really takes off. graphically and musically its good and theirs a bit of a plot your a merc fighting ''their war''.

not sure about the xbox version.

I hear aero wings 2 is a bit of a flight sim thats very realistic and includes combat but its supposedly very difficult to play.

Sadly, the DC AFD was the closest they came to getting it right. Air Force Delta Strike (PS2) and Air Force Delta Storm (XBX) are both very weak entries and not worth even the low low prices they're sporting now.

Why the hell did Sega never port Sega Strike Fighter to the Dreamcast >:( Now that was good arcade combat flying!

Cool! Are there any boss battles in it?

And how about PS1 Warhawk?

I'm not exactly sure about PS1 Warhark, but regarding AFDS:
There aren't exactly boss battles, but there are missions that you'll have to destroy either really large targets, or planes that actually fly REALLY good that you'll have a hard time shooting down.

Air Diver on the MD/Genesis had massive boss battles (one per continent). It was quite an exciting game for its time, that I enjoyed. Although it never had the smooth gameplay and scaling effects of the MD After Burner conversion, the first-person view really made stunt-loops during dogfights exciting (aim the nose up and double-tap thrust as I recall).
