tate mode life changed thx shmups forum

Post by Aguraki »

ja ja I just managed to change my setup to try tate mode on some games, mostly after lot of people here telling me or writing about playing in tate mode.
All I have to say is wow!
:D

I have a dual monitor setup so I rotated my right screen and it's just laying on a box(don't have any stand or good looking setup-/).
I've also installed a free programm to rotate monitors(I-rotate) but I don't really think I need it as rotation is built in MAME.

Noticed a few things:
-have to change the main monitor when playing PC games(like blue wish or raiden 3 that I reinstalled after reading a bit more about).
-can't make blue wish resurrection or eden's aegis works on tate;is it possible?can't see any option and if I use the rotate programm the game doesn't work.
-it seems I have a better view from slightly being left of the screen(technically top) than right(bottom).
Are LCD screen supposed to have a better contrast from top angle?

Anyway I'm quite thrilled right now and wanted to let u know eheh, esp that I wouldn't have touched my setup if some of you hasn't insisted-)

I think I'm gonna shut down the tate screen when not playing cause mouse going on the screen is annoying.

Next step, dedicated PC and CRT? :D

For the hardcore old-school shmupper, he or she'd have access to an low-res 15kHz RGB monitor, a CRT-based SVGA monitor, an XRGB upscan device, some PCBs, a candy cab and/or supergun and plenty of old school gaming consoles -- there are many import (and some USA based domestic shmup releases) console shmup titles that do have obligatory tate accessed from the main menu. Of course, the real challenge is finding proper Japanese RGB cables for them gaming consoles if going the the RGB route though (or just find some Euro Scart cables instead and use an Scart to JPN RGB adapter will work wonders).

It's quite a pleasure to have such a candy cab with the ability to play both dedicated arcade PCBs and gaming consoles on it -- of course, by using one of viletim's ace Scart to Jamma device or one of those Ultracade UVC devices is necessary. There's something cool about being able to play 360 shmups on a tate setup, especially on an arcade monitor setup indeed. Running the XBox 360 indie game of Prismatic Solid on an arcade monitor is doable (although it's running in 480i @ 60fps framerate -- looks stunning nevertheless).

The problem is that many LCD monitors on the market are TN film, which, besides their inferior color reproduction, can only be made to optimize their viewing angle in one direction (horizontal or vertical). When you rotate a TN LCD, the horizontal viewing angle becomes the vertical viewing angle, leading to issues that can be bad enough to where you simply can't see the entire screen at full brightness at the same time. This, along with cost, is the main reason such monitors don't come with pivoting stands.

If you really want an LCD monitor that can pivot without loss of viewing angle, you'll need something more expensive that does not use TN film. I personally have a Dell U2311H, though I honestly don't pivot it very often since my consoles are attached to an HDTV at the moment.

(slightly moving off topic) what i waiting for is a shump that makes full use of a widescreen, eather a hori like darius or even better a vert in tate, im quite suprised it hasnt caught on yet. If its about retaining compatability with std monitors then why dont devs just make a option that moves the score and all the other info stuff into the widescreen unused space. Imagine DDP without the chain count taking up so much screen realstate

Isn't Deathsmiles 2X full 16:9 widescreen? I play on an 4:3 CRT tv and I get the top/bottom letterbox.

Congrats on being reborn in anew life filled with Tate, it makes all the difference!

For now I'll do with my cheap monitors, already a big step for me eheh.

thx starcreator for the answer,as said I'll do with what I have, even if it's not optimal,it's clearler better than before.

is aero fighters 3 close?
I did a funny thing once to see how it looked,I ran darius in windowed mode and extended to both screens;that looked awesome and I can understand how original cab must have been.
Unfortunately my screens aren't the same so I couldn't fit the pic well ahaha.
Congrats on being reborn in anew life filled with Tate, it makes all the difference!
thx and absolutely,it's like rediscovering all my games!
tbh I wouldn't have bothered if I had only 1 monitor cause I don't really feel like moving my setup too much.
Best would be a second machine but it's good for now.

After a few tries I managed to have a steady setup today.
Tried DDPDOJ and in screen options there is "TATE" and "TATE HOSE1";anywone know the difference?

Feels like a child at xmas :D

My understanding is, the tate mode in the Arika PS2 ports is a pixel to pixel output the way the PCB would output it, which unfortunately means that on a regular TV, many onscreen elements would be invisible due to overscan, and the aspect ratio would likely be incorrect in the absence of hardware image size controls. Tate hosei processes the image to make it friendlier to regular TVs (overscan compensation and aspect ratio correction). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

This old post seems to concur.
