How about WiiWare

Post by TWITCHDOCTOR »

How about a WiiWare topic.

I know,I know...I'm late as usual. I recently have internet access with my Wii.
Personally I think its great! But there is a downside, which I'll mention later.

Virtual console games kick ass! Keep em coming!
Original titles are also great(at least good to have something to try out new).

Do you have any favorites? Recomendations? Heres some of mine...
World of Goo
And Yet It Moves
Art of Balance
Alien Crush
Drift Mania
Carnival King

Downsides...? It seems in this day of age, we all store/collect things in small pieces of media. I mean cell phones,I-pods,etc,etc. I guess having a nice collection of games on the shelf can no longer compete with the simplicity of hard drive storage. I still believe having a collection is superior, but you can download ANYTHING nowadyas. Even music!!!
Cds are so much obsolete as 8-Track tapes...yes Tapes.

Should one feel guilty/cheap for downloading media, rather than owning the original format?
I guess, in this day, it no longer matters...
Comments? Opinions?
Please, my intentions are only simple...not to open a can of worms.

There's no shame - is there? I've also just got my Wii online and I've been trying the Bit.Trip games. I was a bit disappointed in Fate, it's so slow... Runner is really good though, so is the first one, Beat. Lighttrax is supposed to be good, in a tron like way, but I haven't played it.

I've mainly been playing Mario Kart online, I can't seem to stop.

I felt like Star Soldier R was a waste of my money. It was fun for the first two plays, but then you realizes there's little originality in this one...
On a different note, I've noticed SEGA CD's Virtual Console now has Pulseman. Mmmmmmm... Pulseman. ^_^

I'd recommend the Bit.Trip games, Konami's Rebirth games. Art Style Orbient is pretty good too.

I download as little as I can on Wii, only exclusives. I find it poor business practice that WiiWare downloads are tied to the console and not to your account. Yeah, they may be willing to transfer it over but there's no guarantee. And then there's the region lock that makes accessing the JP store to get Pole no Daibouken a real hassle. I just have Cave Story and the ReBirth stuff; nothing else on the horizon that I'm looking for unless Salamander ReBirth is ever released.

On the sub-topic of digital download, this is something that I personally can get behind. I understand that many people do not like this, but there are many benefits for me. Space, stuff adds up really quick *glances at a crammed shelf of a lifetime of cds, then at the dvd shelf (half of which are even in cd books)*. Sure for things like games having a hard copy is good, many you can resale for a decent amount sometimes. Plus you get booklets with them, but many publishers are saying that they are planning to no longer include instruction manuals. I would say that around 95% of the gamers I know don't even look through the manuals, which is stoopid.. For things like XBLA (I don't have a Wii, so..) I really enjoy that on wednesdays I can sit on the couch in my pajamas and demo new games, or even start in on a new one, for a reasonable cost. Sure, it's a very smart ideal to make back up copies on flash drives for the future.
Now, the biggest argument for digital distribution of media for me is books. This year I am finally gonna get a Kindle for myself! I have been reading my entire life, and absolutely devour books. These add up in the amount of space quicker than anything else, I'll sell, give away, and was recently yelled at by the girl I was seeing for admitting to recycling some books because I thought they were not worth donating and deserved a chance at becoming new, better books. Sure, I'll probably keep a few books around, but being able to get rid of a few book shelves in my house, and have my entire library in one "book" is awesome! There is also a massive amount of public domain books available for free download through the Kindle. There are quite a few I would love to read, and many that I'm sure I'll find. Being able to purchase hard to find books, and new releases for a reduced cost is such an amazing thing, books are expensive! There are still many more books that are now only available through the Kindle store. Bleaching paper is one of the most toxic things that we do to our environment.
So, yeah, I'm all for this push to go digital. I have too many cds that could easily fit on a mp3 player or two. I don't reall need all the books I have (I really do reread things several times though), and can't wait untill I can start thining down my dvds. There's just way too much plastic in the world, I'm willing to do my part in slowing my dependancy on it.
Oh, have fun with your new Wii games!
edit: I'll have to admit that comic books in a digital format kinda suck though. I really don't buy many, just a couple collected volumes a year. I have been reading manga on line, only 'cause it hasn't been translated and published yet, and I'm kinda poor.

Nintendo needs to revamp their WiiWare store to emphasize titles titles other than those recently released. There's a lot of great stuff (as people here have listed previously), but things get buried far too quickly. I'm sure my random forum rant will get things fixed. :?

I've yet to DL anything for the Wii. I hate that it's tied to the console for one. For two...I have most of the stuff off the virtual console. There are a few exclusives, true, but I also hate the damn controller :) Would much rather use my PS3 or 360....most all my DLC is for PS3 and Steam.

Blaster Master: Overdrive is a pretty decent pick as well. Sadly it only supports the Wiimote for controller, meaning hand cramps are inevitable.

Luckily the best stuff (read: Konami's Rebirth titles) work with the Gamecube controller, which means they work with a PS2-GC adapter, which means they work with the PS2's Saturn-style controller. Playing Contra Rebirth using one of those is pretty sweet. And the Classic Controller isn't too bad either.

Much like XBLA I think Wiiware is a good idea, but when a downloadable title is available for multiple consoles I pick the XBLA one. Not in small part due to Nintendo once again screwing Europe. We still don't even have Cave Story on our Wiiware...
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I really, really like the classic controller - much more than the 360/PS3 controllers - but it is an extra expense and it's just more junk lying around (plus it's wired, ugh). VC is great (though there are a ton of obvious absentees), but there aren't many Wiiware titles I couldn't do without.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Phoenix Wright is a must if you haven't played the DS version.

I rarely download games on XBL/PSN/Wiiware.Just to give you an idea, I have 2 for the 360, 1 for the PSN and 1 for the Wii.

I don't know, call me oldschool, but owning a box and the actual CD is worth something to me. I understand people that buy exclusives, specifically designed softwares for an online only release. But paying to play SMB3 on my Wii? If I want to play SMB3, I'll buy the damn cart for 5$ and boot it in my NES. Yeah, it's more practical to own a single console with all your crap in it. But paying to play games I can play on other platforms, which I own, makes no sense at all to me. I'd understand someone who would download Alien Soldier, for example, without wanting to shell out 100$ for it. Perfectly reasonable.

But paying 50$ + the 10 or so gig of bandwidth to download Agarest War? Are people out of their mind? If you don't like it you can't even pass it on to someone else... That being said, I will buy Guwange when it comes out next week on XBL. Excellent game, and I'd rather play it on my TV with my stick than with a crappy pad on my small computer screen.

My Wii is pretty new and I'm addicted to MH so I haven't picked anything from Wiiware or VC yet but there are a few things that appeal to me.

Anyone have a list of the good shmups available on both services in EU? Can't seem to find the right combination of words to even come close on the search bar...
