Only marginally shmup-related, but I don't think anyone else has posted this (if I'm wrong feel free to let me know, so I an get going on a rare self-lock): I don't keep up much with the Golden Joystick Awards, but apparently at this year's ceremony they opened with a short CG sequence featuring the R-Type ship:
