Hmm, I'll probably have to edit this in once RB posts the current version. Thanks for the tip, though.Mero wrote:I know it's a bit late but OTZ Sonic Wings and Rabio Lepus both save high scores. You have to save manually on the options screen. Sonic Wings has auto load but Rabio Lepus doesn't, so every time you load up RL you have to remember to load up your scores too (I overwrote my scores a few times because of this).

It's up! Thanks again for the help, everyone: if you see anything else that needs fixing in there, let me know so I can forward it to RB. Hope you enjoy.
By the way, chances are he'll have another assignment for me soon, so I may be asking for your assistance once again before long...

That's a great read-- just as I've come to expect from you. I've been playing PS2 shmups for years and years, and now in just a few minutes someone can come to know most of what I came to know-- and then some more!

Wish I hadn't checked the forum... now I have to stay up later and read the article. haha

just skimming, (save a thorough read for tomorrow) can't help but love lines such as this:

Well, I love the soundtrack and I really liked the overall style from the little I've seen from it.ShmupSamurai wrote: btw, am I one of the only few people that enjoyed Chaos Field?
I intend to go for Chaos Field on the DC as soon as I beat Mars Matrix with Mosquito 2.
BTW, the article is amazing, BM.
I wonder what your next assignment will be...

Correction regarding SegaAges Space Harrier it does not support Flightstick, at least not officially. You got it mixed up with Galaxy Force which does officially support the hori Flightstick2.
And an honest (biased) complaint, i really don't like that you downplayed the value of the Oretachi releases. Beyond just my personal enjoyment of playing the games on PS2, the presentation and packaging is a lot of fun for the $20-25 they priginally cost to obtain. Call me old fashioned, but I love the small extras. They add a lot to the experience of playing a ROM. And it should be corrected that all the discs included at least one full length remix which is also featured with a musicvideo on the dvd. The remixes alone are worth a lot imo. Shit, I'd pay $20 just for the Shinji Hosoe (Supersweep) Haunted Castle remix! Heck, each of the Supersweep mixes are worthy of a purchase by themselves! Just imo, of course.
Like, you're getting an OST and exclusive remix(es) for each of the games.

Re: PS2 Racketboy Shmup Article is UP!
Fantastic! Another required reading list, and a must have resource for many people. I'll still refer to the Saturn list once in awhile, it was so very helpful when I was deciding what games I should look into for the system. The PS2 list turned out just as nice. Great job!
Maybe you should do yourself a solid and start keeping track of the games for the 360, the way things are turning out that's going to be a big one in a couple of years. Seriously good luck with the XNA side of it, maybe a couple of honorable mentions for it, then forsake all the random crap?

Re: PS2 Racketboy Shmup Article is UP!
Heh, sorry, but I can only call 'em as I see 'em personally...not like my opinion is anything resembling definitive, naturally. Case in point:Koa Zo wrote:can't help but love lines such as this...regarding what may be my favorite PS2 shmup!
I can definitely see the appeal in all the trimmings for dyed-in-the-wool fans of the featured titles, but considering that they're up against collections including dozens of (fuller-featured and better-implemented) games like them their appeal is very limited to pretty much anyone else: I did mention those soundtrack remixes and such, but giving them much higher billing simply due to the pack-ins didn't agree with me personally. Again, though, that's just coming from one schlump's perspective. And an honest (biased) complaint, i really don't like that you downplayed the value of the Oretachi releases.
D'oh...will submit to RB for correction.Correction regarding SegaAges Space Harrier it does not support Flightstick, at least not officially. You got it mixed up with Galaxy Force which does officially support the hori Flightstick2.
No way in heck I'm thinking anywhere near that far ahead, heh.Maybe you should do yourself a solid and start keeping track of the games for the 360, the way things are turning out that's going to be a big one in a couple of years.
These things are a good deal of work, yeah, but the help from you guys makes it easier.Man, it must've been one EXHAUSTING ride for you.
Thanks much for the kind comments; hopefully more to come on the next one soon.

That is one damn fine and useful article! Especially including the retro game collections, and to have all this info on one single page, which is easy to scroll and search instead of having to click through sub-pages or something. Good job Magnet of the Bullet!

Great job Mr. Magnet. Your PS, SS and DC writeups were a huge help when I was building up my collection for those consoles, and I still refer back to them when I need reminding what I've missed. Will be doing the same with this list too!

Thanks much for the compliments.
I unfortunately do not own a PCE and have very limited experience with the system and its games, so that task will have to fall onto another fan.Christoph wrote:If ever anyone is considering doing another - a PCE shmup overview would be amazing.
Glad you enjoyed, but the Dreamcast rundown on Racketboy isn't by me - I did, however, write an article about DC shmups on my blog a while back.Your PS, SS and DC writeups were a huge help when I was building up my collection for those consoles, and I still refer back to them when I need reminding what I've missed.

Yeah, I've wanted Rob to do one of his shmup countdowns for the PCE, but the task really is Herculean if you're going to be comprehensive. I believe it has the largest shmup library among consoles by a good margin. Perhaps it would be more manageable if one set aside the many arcade ports, most of which do not compare that favorably with the originals, and stuck to the exclusives.Christoph wrote: a PCE shmup overview would be amazing.

That sounds like a good idea. Or at least split the task among two or more people, between exclusives and ports.professor ganson wrote:Perhaps it would be more manageable if one set aside the many arcade ports, most of which do not compare that favorably with the originals, and stuck to the exclusives.
