The Walking Dead

Post by rancor »

Have to admit that I rarely get excited over TV shows, but did anyone else catch the first episode? I LOVE zombie movies, and this was simply amazing. I can't believe its going to be a regular broadcast.
I watched it last night expecting cheap production values and terrible acting, but neither was true. Great effects and a great cast as well. Thank god at least that its not on FOX - otherwise it would get cancelled 10 episodes in..

Any comments?

FOX cancels shows by the second episode or sooner.

I like how Douglas is all like "THESE PEOPLE DON'T NEED ME, THEY NEED YOU, A MURDEROUS GIMPY CRAZY PSYCHOPATH!" I'm going to miss ole Dougy when he's gone.

On topic: I didn't think this was airing so soon either. Shall give it a watch when I get home tomorrow. Very excited.

It's not airing till the 31st AFAIK, but it's already leaked out on the net....grabbed it last night. Version I got is a low res screener. I'm almost tempted to wait to watch it in hi-def....

Oh, the irony: down here in Latin America it is FOX who will broadcast The Walking Dead. They've been promoting it nonstop for the last two months, I think there are also street signs all over. But the "zombiemania" doesn't seem to grab much people here (or maybe I didn't notice it) compared to the US or other english speaking countries. Australians in particular seem ridiculously hyped about this. Or maybe it's just that the aussies I talk to are die-hard fans of zombie movies/RE and the likes...

It'll be on november 1st here and I'll be watching it. I get the feeling it'll be 28 days later (dude wakes up after X amount of days to find he's in the Apocalypse) and Dawn of the Dead with L4D2 in series format, perhaps (hopefully!) less CGI and more real people in costumes and such.

But, FOX isn't precisely a good supporter. I just started watching Better off Ted, only to find out it was cancelled very quickly...

This is about as terrible as I thought it'd be.

It's bizarre you never see mad hype for a Movie being made into a comic, board game, or breakfast cereal. I've accepted that budget is the driving force - spending hundreds of thousands on one episode makes you want to advertise, and the advertising makes people think they want something.

It's too bad for those "down graded" adoptions that are actually pretty good.

Give it a chance. The comic takes a few issues to really get going IMO, and I suspect the show will take a few eps.

I just watched it. Its kinda good with a lot of filler.

The problem with these types of things is they take a stereotypical view of it everytime. Also the main character has no brain trotting into an urban jungle like that.

Thanks for the tip, watched the first episode and was pleasantly surprised. Ok, all of the actors were boring as hell (then again, this helped with believability), the plot was bog-standard seen-100-times, until in the cool scenario at the end. Greg Nicotero's effects were amazingly gory for a tv-production, good to see there has been no compromising! I hear the comic book series is great, and the plot gets better and better later on.

Lately I've been thinking that there should be a ban on all things zombie for say, 10 years, so that the subject wouldn't be exploited and milked dry. I mean, shallow things like Zombieland make me sick, and 28 Weeks Later was pretty well made but totally unoriginal and forgettable. And in Japan things are even worse, they seem to be churning out lousy low-budget zombie stuff all the time, because they know that fanboys in the west will buy anything if it has zombies, japanese girls and swords in the cover. BUT: The Walking Dead felt like a nice return to the basics, without any stupid humor and postmodern trickery.

It's the aussies that you talk to. I've never heard of The Walking Dead and I live in arguably one of the most stereotypical places in Australia.

I presume this is on cable TV?

I think everyone has hijacked the show from torrents. I think it airs this coming week in parts of the world.

How many people commenting in here have actually read the comic? From some of the comments, I'm assuming not many.

It seems they are following the comic pretty faithfully, right down to the shots and angles they are using. If the series continues in this style, I will be very happy. The first episode basically followed the first issue of the comic, with a couple minor tweaks so it translates a bit better for TV(the end of the episode for instance).

Read the comic, then watch the show again. They pretty much nailed it dead on(heh heh).

This is not a zombie-gore-action driven series; the comic focuses more on the character development and the actual situation of trying to live in a world full of zombies. Encounters with the zombies are often few and far between, and its not focused on gore. The focus is on the characters; they want you to identify with them. They want you to feel it when somebody dies. This is not a mindless action comic!

I really hope this is given the chance to progress through the story line. The comic is still going strong and the writers have already said they are in it for the long haul.

Fingers crossed. I can't wait for the series to get going weekly(or whatever schedule its on)!

On topic: I think I'll probably wait for this one to get a few episodes in so I can watch a few in a straight run. Like someone mentioned the comics take some time before they pick up steam and I imagine the show will only take that much longer.

I though the first episode was okay, nothing to great. The zombies were pretty damn good actually, especially the one that was all wasted away, the first one he saw when he got the bicycle, and returned to. But, for something like this it needs a starting point, and it looks like it can only get better from here. The premiere got huge ratings, and has already been run on other networks, including commercial free on IFC. AMC has a ton of money for development right now from doing so well with their original series over the last couple of years, and it looks like they have been willing to go all in with this one. Considering how popular zombies are getting in the main stream (makes sense people seem to be terrified of each other in real life these days) this is going to be a solid run of a couple of seasons. I'm not familiar with the comic, but this may end up being a huge addition to zombie entertainment. I'm definitely excited to watch, and am grateful that it's on a network that will have something run a full course and not randomly cancel it. Fuck you Fox network.

The first episode only covered the first 50 or so pages of the comic. Can't wait see peoples reactions when the prison rolls around.

Originally, Zombieland was slated to be released as a TV movie but the creators decided that it'd be better off as a full-blown big-budgeted special EFX theatrical release & they were right. There's word that a Zombieland 2 film sequel is in the works. Sly ad promotion for them Hostess Twinkies & Sno Balls snacks in the ZL flick. For some odd reason, it ain't possible to buy such tasty Hostess snacks in Japan (outside of buying them in U.S. military PBX locations based in Japan though). Was glad to have brought along a box of Twinkies stashed in my suitcase during my two week stay in Japan -- quite tasty indeed.

I'm a cynic that loves parodies so I found Zombieland to be hilarious. Very Americanised of course, but then again if I were to make a movie I'd be secretly promoting Paul's Iced Coffee in it too.

episode 3 was great too! 8)

It's been a very long time since I have followed a current series...it sucks!

Having to wait a week to see what happens next is killing me.

Still really, really impressed so far and I would definitely say they have exceeded my expectations ten fold!

What is going to be really awesome is in a few years to be able to marathon through the whole thing at once, like some epic 3 day long zombie film.

ep3 didn't fare well for me. No danger, no zombies.. Hopefully ep4 won't be a fictional "survivor" show.

I find with almost all TV shows the budget goes down the pan after 3 or 4 episodes. They take you away from the main event and put you in side stories where the main event could in theory not even exist at all.
