What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

^ It's surprising how compelling the Shenmue games are to play once you get past the first couple of hours and it really starts to feel like an adventure. I still want to drive a fork lift for a job in real life. The second game is just as much fun, and bigger. Shenmue is awesome!
I'm going to go get Fallout New Vegas tonight! Then I will be officially dead to the world for quite awhile. Can't wait! Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time, so I am 100% absolutly stoked!

Shenmue is life. I actually do drive a forklift as part of my job, so I kinda had a fun experience. While I was obsessed and playing Shenmue for the first time I would drive a forklift for hours at work, then come home and drive it again in my Shenmue world job. It was kinda depressing, but awesome.

just started on Alan Wake. Mixed feelings right now. just completed chapter 2 of 6. Not scary at all :( And one of the most linear games in the history of videogames

but the story is pretty good and its what keeps me going 8)

Game Dev Story (Iphone)

Game "ends" (well, not really, but scoring does) after 20 years. After living through Segma, Intendo, Sonny etc's hand helds and console releases, i managed to shift 680m units of software, had 18 "Hall of Fame" series (each with a good number of sequels), 1 GoTY aware (Mef Zero GX 2) , and 48.8m top seller "Bush Nudger 4".

Persona 3 Portable (PSP)

Last boss - about half way through - it's quite a long boss it seems! Been a great ride.

I've been playing Fallout: New Vegas for the past few days. I had Tuesday and Wednesday off, so I kind of played too much... Love it, though.

Same here with New Vegas. After a year of sitting on my ass I'm finally starting a new job Monday, trying to cram as much game time in until then. About 10 hours in and loving the hell out of this one.

Ehh forget what all I've wasted time on. A lot of crappy 3D action game ports to the PC with poor combat. Lesse:

Last couple months or so (back to August):
Turok & Turok 2 - Turok 1 bugs on emulator, and didn't want to fool around with the PC version due to the strangeified music. No more swimming theme. :( Turok 2...god...obnoxious maps and enemies. Teh cheetz were used.
Donkey Kong 64 - Rare's formula is more than a bit stale (and hell, I've only played through the original Banjo-Kazooie). Via N64 emulator. Lots of savestate abuse, though probably not too necessary.

Darkened Skye - Bad combat. Some ugly stuff early on in the game. But it opens up significantly later on. Too bad I spent half the game trying to blast things with melee and the early Prismatic spell, which is really repetitive. Some awesome areas though - the Gargoyle Realm looks awesome above-ground ("Do you have any Celtic knotwork I can...borrow?")

Soul Reaver 2 - First of the Legacy of Kain games I could get working. The PC version of the first probably wasn't much loss - I'd rather look up Diablo or Baldur's Gate (a game I've barely started, in fact). The original Soul Reaver probably is also crap but I wanted to see how crazy the game looked - and I remember the demo (a little bit) on the disc that game with my PlayStation (back when it was still just PlayStation and Dual Shock). In any case: Soul Reaver 2 - some great art direction, after leaving the monastery at least. (lol @ the stained glass window over William The Just's tomb. SKULLZ) Good amount of variety in most everything. Hell, I even enjoyed one of the puzzle segments later on. (I didn't enjoy the Fire Forge which came immediately after - waste of time and a waste of a power - but at least it was over in a half hour or less, mercifully.) Combat is forgettable but I got through it fine (normal difficulty), without any hangups on bosses (because there aren't any). There are somewhat tough fights but I think I got sent back to a checkpoint just once or twice - the hero, Raziel, gets a free trip to the warped "spectral plane" if he loses combat in the normal world, and only a few powerful enemies can follow him there. Also, fuck you Elder God, just because. Did I mention it's silly to have the hero dramatically narrate what he just did? The sequel does this a bit also.
Blood Omen 2 - Ugly, especially in comparison to Soul Reaver 2, or most any other game. It's a bit disappointing that the futuristic theme glimpsed in Soul Reaver 2 turned into aping Thief, except without any fun (and sneaking's not really my thing either, at least not the way Thief does it). I got to play a little of BO2 on GameTap a couple years ago, and just wanted to finish it off. I like the crappy industrial areas theme through much of the game, and they do get you out of sewers and the like early enough. A fair amount of variety. Much longer than SR2. I rediscovered why I didn't finish it on GameTap years ago: Got stuck at the first form of the first boss as you're supposed to have blocking and dodging skills - when everything you've gone up against to the point is weak and can be mowed straight down. It's like hitting a brick wall. Unfortunately, combat and the "Dark Gifts" suck. Kain (the hero) got somewhat less grating as time went on, but the "let's go suck some blood" cutscene (which plays every time you suck blood - and you pretty much have to, unless you have cheats on, and I just kept wanting to see that life bar extend) did not. By the end of the game, I pretty much had the combat figured out, but it was still easy to get caught by an unblockable attack, and I didn't have the patience to figure out points to break an enemy's combo (which changes from enemy to enemy). No puzzles were terribly difficult through most of the game after I figured out what to do, though the last boss required referencing the walkthrough again. General tone of the game: Suck blood. Swing claws. Block attacks. Build rage. Be bored. Game started crashing around a few checkpoints late in the game, but I kept at it. Just finished it an hour ago actually, and installed it immediately after. Hooray!
So I guess I'll install Defiance and be done with it. I'm not expecting much, but hopefully something more like Soul Reaver 2 with maybe some of BO2's length, if that equals fun environments.

Dino D-Day - I just remembered this one after writing about Nightmare House 2 (below) and I'll just say that the team's moving it to a multiplayer game probably was for the best. The original single-player game demo is filled with Source holdovers, is buggy, and has some generally infuriating map design. There's also not much to it - it's maybe a half hour if you drag it out: All you do is go through a crashed train, get up on the track, then do something to get into another area, and try to navigate a minefield, before the end area. Basically, you can avoid it because it's crap. Hopefully multiplayer will be better, but I'm not likely to check back often.

On to better stuff:
Morrowind - For the first time, I got through the main quest in the correct fashion, hooray! Also completed the main quest for Tribunal, the ugly first expansion. There's also Bloodmoon, but I've already done all of that, I think. I did get the feeling that really, I can finally put this one to bed. I didn't really enjoy it as much as I have in the past, mainly because some of the flaws are becoming more evident with time. But that's okay. Still the longest-lasting game I've played yet.

Nightmare House 2 - This is an excellent Half-Life 2: Episode One mod, released August 23rd. Found it by accident. It's very much in the vein of Afraid of Monsters, but better - in part because of the newer technology and newer design ethic. Still, a lot of fairly ugly levels, but the "what the hell lol" moments made up for it. I think my favorite moment, aside from a powerful scene that reminded me of the nuke detonation from Call of Duty 4, and a couple other optional ones almost immediately after (like meeting the Hospital announcement system), was actually crawling through a vent. You can look out, and what you see is not what you should expect. So I turned around and crawled back to the opening to see if I couldn't get a "correct" view. Of course the vent had sealed itself up by this point! Not the first time the game does something like that - there's some VERY trippy things predicated on where you're looking at the time - but subtle. Had me anxious for a while. "How's being crazy treating you?"

Anticipated: Cry of Fear, upcoming hopefully awesome HL1 game made by people behind the aforementioned Afraid of Monsters and other good stuff. Likely the most technically accomplished and realistic HL1 mod yet - from what I've read, they are even improving on Paranoia's technical accomplishments.

Sonic Advance 3 [Damnit, is it just no$gba, or is it this glitchy? Ocean Base was a mess to get through, I kept glitch-dieing on the tops of crusher blocks if I hit the wall to the right of it for some reason, and those red octopus things make splats that NEVER DISAPPEAR, which I'm almost certain is a glitch].

F-Zero Climax [Great fun, but gah! The Platinum Cup is horrible to go through! Recognizing the courses is most of what's making me place so badly -- the machines handle totally differently, so say, Silence has gone from "annoying" in SNES F-Zero to "OH GOD WHY" in Climax. Also, needed to come out in the States, but the GBA is 5 years dead now...]

I picked up Mario + Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story recently on a whim, and thought I'd regret it since I haven't been a big fan of the more recent "Mario RPG" entries...I have to admit, though, I'm actually have a good deal of fun with this one.

Been playing the open beta of Vinductus, a medieval hack and slash action mmorpg that has me hooked. As a huge fan of PSO on DC, there are many aspects that grab me about this. The battle system is really fun and much more challenging than I'm used to.

Started up Shenmue again for the 2nd time, and still can't get over how great this game is.

Also, I'm playing the retranslated Phantasy Star for sms thanks to a flash cart. Never played this one and am enjoying the 3D caves and vibrant graphics.

Quake. Loads more fun than Doom, but still feels like it.
Unlike Doom, I suck at it though.

Monster Hunter Tri and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

Monster Hunter basically.

After hitting a serious wall in MHFU for about three weeks I finally took down my first Tigrex last night. He's a damn swine with an oversized hitbox and bad temper.

Tri is a lot more user friendly. I'm now onto 3* offline and cleared about half of the 1* online today. My first online experience of the game was very positive, with everyone chipping in and having a good time.

Finishing FFXIII after having it on hiatus for a while. The game may not be the best ever, but I really don't think it's bad by any stretch. The only thing that bugs me is that you really can't damage most of the late-game enemies for any decent amount until you stagger them, and it seems to take forever to do so, even when running 3 RAVs in my team.

Because two of my best buddies have Fallout: New Vegas and I can't afford it, I started playing Fallout 3 again, thanks to finally getting all of that DLC. Going to put wayyyyyy too much time into this game.

Trying to 100% Etrian Odyssey 1. Just got the fire scale off Wyrm. I think stacking all that Luc gear helps out a lot more than I imagined, or maybe I just got lucky.

I don't know what will take more time, just grinding out the remaining 2 dragons with my current party, or getting my rebirthed medic and alchemist to 70, so I can have 3 party members with max scavenge to increase the drop rates.

Like any other rpg, 100% this is a total grindfest but killing these guys is actually kind of fun.

Back on Warhammer 40k: Dark Crusade. Something about this time of year always makes me want to get into the tabletop game but I wouldn't know where to start nor where to find a game to join. That and I'm always broke anyway. Wish Winter Assault worked on Windows 7, hate leaving gaps in a series.

My brother just got a 3D TV a couple days ago for the house so I bought Super Stardust HD and MotorStorm 3D Rift for the PS3 yesterday. Playing games in 3D is awesome. I had been pretty skeptical of 3D just being a big ass gimmick but after finally experiencing it I can definitely say it's here to say. Now I'm not normally into first person shooters but after hearing that the new Call of Duty: Black Ops is gonna be available with 3D I'm super pumped.

@ Ed Oscuro while the Legacy of kain wont work, the PS1 vesion does if u emulate it. Although if memory serves i could only get it to run in 1 emulator (cant rember which one sorry) and even that had a graphical glitch with the health bar not displaying properlly (but u could still see how much health and magic u had), but other then that it worked fine. As for Soul Reaver 1 (the best out of the series) i hope that works in a new pc as i wouldnt mind getting my old PC copy a run though at some point. It sucks when old PC games dont work and nobody works on creating a patch.

As for me ive been playing Zelda: a link to the past. which is my first playthough and im having a blast. I cant believe Nintendo hasnt taken a leaf out of Capcom and Konami's book and released a 2D wiiware Zelda. This game is fucking brilliant and loved by gamers everywhere.

I did try it and it does look awesome in 3D. However, I never got into the Wipeout series so I'm pretty bad at it. I'll probably give the demo a few more tries to get decent at it but for now I'm pretty into Super Stardust HD. I just bought the additional single player dlc (adds a few new game modes) and co-op dlc (adds a few game modes and ship editor). Unfortunately the extra co-op game modes aren't in 3D (regular co-op is) but that didn't bother me too much since all the single player dlc was.
