Phoenix [iPhone] Bullet-Hell Heaven

Post by jaklar »

Came across a game called Phoenix on the iPhone; was released a few days ago. It's a top-notch bullet-hell shmup, randomly generated enemies, great graphics, very challenging...and right up the alley of the fine folks who orbit these parts. Best part? Only 99-cents, which is a freaking steal. Play now, thank me later. :D

I think the controls are pretty good. There are no smart bombs or secondary fire buttons, so the entire game is played by simply sliding your finger. Fortunately, the hit-box for your ship is very clear, placed at the nose of your ship (it's the blue canopy). Powerups, shields and health are all driven by the gameplay, which is pretty interesting, and adds an element of strategy as to the best time to grab a powerup.

Leaderboard is global, broken down by country, state, city...without using Open Feint. As a massive fan of DoDonPachi and Espgaluda, this happily sits beside them on my iPad as a worthy shmup. I'm a sucker for the random nature of Phoenix, as there are no patterns to memorize, every round feels fresh.

Cheers, the ship kinda looks like Cyvern in those screens.

Reminds me more of Chaos Field than anything else in terms of ship design.

Do these people have the rights to the Phoenix name, or are they just hoping they won't get sued? Or is Phoenix such a generic name that anyone can call their game Phoenix?

Only time will tell...

Anyways, what does it play like? :|

I'm rather curious as to the game mechanics. :)

Considering it's a well known mythological creature I think they're in the clear.
