Best, most accurate home port of Toki??...

Post by dave4shmups »

I really love this game, and BTW, Ben Shinobi has a Superplay up of the arcade rev.

But what is the best, most accurate home port of Toki? Lynx, NES, or Genesis?

The genny is like a remixed version, IIRC. The Nes port is surprisingly accurate, minus the graphics.

Thanks for that info! :D

Well, here's a page on the Amiga port from the Hall of Light:

http://hol.abime.net/1450

Looks exactly the same as the arcade, at least graphically.

EDIT-just played the NES rev. on an emulator; the first two stages at least are identical in setup to the arcade, just hope ALL of the stages from the arcade original are there! And yean, the Genesis remake definately seems like a remix edition of this game-no harm in owning both ports, though! 8)

I remember the Lynx version being very accurate, but I haven't played it in awhile. The NES version seems to be accurate, but, for some odd reason, the US version of it has an added life meter.

The arcade version has a life meter as well. With the Genesis port it's a "one hit and your dead" situation; making that port a lot harder, IMO.

Odd. The arcade version was a 1-hitter when I played it. I'm positive.

Same here, although you can withstand an extra hit with the football helmet on IIRC. Maybe there's a dip switch setting?

Amiga version was a nigh-on perfect port. And the coin-op was a one hitter when I played it last.

Well, I all I know is that Ben Shinobi has an arcade Toki superplay up on his site, and it has a lifebar, and he always plays games on default or harder. So maybe it is the helmet.

Could be a regional thing as well, I dunno.

no actually. There is a review of the arcade VS amiga rev at http://www.amigachapterone.com/ and there are noticeable differences. (songs, graphics and level design, and missing bosses). But the game is still 100 % enjoyable in the Amiga form IMO.

All of the arcade ones I have seen have no life meter. They do have that extra hit with the football helmet thing, though.
