I was all about this... Until I saw "Episode 1" in the title.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
That's the thing. This doesn't really feel like an incomplete game. There's a lot of content and it tales a fair bit of time to get through. I'm starting to suspect the Episode bit is just to make people feel better about buying a game with the level of content that old games had, not a big sprawl like NSMB Wii.

Oh, man. I just returned from one of the best gaming experiences that I had in my entire life !
Awesome game ! Not finished yet, but I'm at the last world (Mad Gear Zone) and thought the game simply amazing! Seriously, in my concept, is the second best Sonic launched, only behind to the first Sonic, surpassing the rest of the Sonic games released so far.
The gameplay is fantastic, super fun, I found the graphics gorgeous and wonderful in 1080P (I pick the PSN version), great songs, the level design is brilliant! I thought physics consistent because it respects the concept of inertia to start slow and then reach higher speeds and handle Sonic speeds fabulous.
The Homing Attack works great and is still optional, because if you don´t want to use it, there is the possibility of eliminating enemies of the old way. The bonus stage was great, better than the original. The difficulty was well balanced, really enjoyed. There are hidden paths as in previous games of the Genesis.
The acts are longer than I thought. The game is not so short as they say, okay more or less in the middle of the first Sonic in terms of duration. US$ 15 for this game is very cheap for what it is.
Guys, the game was far beyond what I expected. Sega you're to be congratulated because, for me, Sonic returned from a triumphant!
My Score: 10.0
P.S: Sorry about my bad english.

Best news of this thread. I'll have to get some US points later.ArmoredCore wrote:i saw this and alundra near each other in the store
Anyway, tried the demo and it really wasn't enough to go on. The music is awful, but the rest seemed fine. Given that it's episodic, it's no surprise as to why the demo was a single act.

No idea how anybody could compliment the absence of elemental shields. The Homing Attack works great and is still optional, because if you don´t want to use it, there is the possibility of eliminating enemies of the old way.
They should have made the fire shield homing and allow players an additional jump with any shield after bouncing off an enemy.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
I've tried the demo and I'm leaning towards buying it. I was initially surprised by how slow Sonic was to build up speed, but after playing through the demo a few times I think I understand what Sonic Team were thinking. Sonic 1 and 2 were about the instant gratification of sprinting through the levels. In Sonic 4, I imagine it's possible to maintain a high speed, but it's a goal you need to work towards by learning the different routes through the levels. It was the presence of a time counter in the main mode that made me think the emphasis here is on time trials.

I don't want to sound like a troll or something, but I really don't understand all the positive scores for this game. It's not very good on it's own, and compared to the first 3, it's very poor.
Kinda strange too, since I liked Dimps' work on Sonic Advance 3.
Anyway, check out this "Sonic Fan Remix". I kinda doubt it'll ever come out(it's how it seems to go anyways), but man it looks so "right".

Not only does it look and sound awesome, sonic also handles exactly the way he is supposed to.
Why the fuck can't sonic team figure this shit out?

To be fair, this is just a remake of Sonic 2. The first act is exactly the same as in the original.Gozer wrote:Christ almighty!!!

I would just like to see sonic team put this type of thought and effort in making a brand new sonic game with new zones and bosses.
EDIT:
I've seen from some trailers that Sonic 4 uses the Sonic 1 style bonus levels. Seems to be the best decision I've seen so far for that game. I love that style.

You're absolutely right. However it looks better than Sonic 4, and it controls properly. That's the biggest problem by far, is Sonic's physics in 4. They EASILY could have just copied his old physics. I don't know why they didn't. They certainly didn't improve on them in ANY way. In fact, they kind of suck.
EDIT: And the fact that this is made by 2 guys, make Sega's latest effort look even more pathetic.

Good god...I couldn't even get through the demo.
Sonic drops straight down when you let off the controls. When did this start happening?
The 3D doesn't help, either. Everything feels so sluggish, from turning to most any action.
Also, the camera seems way too close.

Actually, it is intended to have stages from the first three Sonic games; see the official thread here.Ruldra wrote:To be fair, this is just a remake of Sonic 2. The first act is exactly the same as in the original.
And here, a comparison of physics between Sonic 2 and Sonic 4. Watch and you WILL facepalm.
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
Woah, didn't know the physics were THAT different.
Although even before watching that, I've seen other videos and wasn't at all impressed. Can't put my finger on it but the game just looks plain boring. And the boss battles end way too quickly.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
If people were even half this nitpicky about all new games we'd be dealing with way fewer shit games. Over half of the examples form that guy had 0 effect on my playing the demo, just because it's different doesn't make it wrong. It's not the greatest game, but I don't see how it's even possibly as bad as some people make it out to be.Stormwatch wrote: And here, a comparison of physics between Sonic 2 and Sonic 4. MM9 at least had a good amount of content available with the initial download. It had the full normal mode plus the normal stages in time attack for 10 dollars. Sonic 4 on the other hand is four zones for 15 dollars.PsychoGun wrote:I was all about this... Until I saw "Episode 1" in the title.

I facepalmed, but not because of the comparison. It's yet another rant that puts people in a box for liking certain games, despite how many of those people are well aware of the differences. However, it is disappointing that a game that's meant to be a throwback didn't attempt to use the old physics (which are definitely better than the new ones).Stormwatch wrote: And here, a comparison of physics between Sonic 2 and Sonic 4. Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
Only played through the first 3 zones but I'm pleasantly surprised so far. I think the level design is spot on, and it's nice to see someones remembered that Sonic is about platforming as well as speed. It's also good that they attempted to make each act feel a little different to the last.
The game also looks good. Not breathtaking by any standards but bright and cheery just like I remember.
While I obviously haven't finished it, so far the lenght seems fine. Yes there are only four zones but the acts are comparable in size to sonic 3 / S&K acts, and there's 3 of them per zone so this is by no means half a Sonic game. That said, I would rather less acts per zone if that meant more different zones. Failing that, it'd have been nice to see something that wasn't just an update of a sonic 1 or 2 zone.
I'm not a fan of the new physics however, it feels like Sonic is running through a swamp or something. While I'm getting used to it, i definately prefer how he used to run and jump. Oh and is it just me or do you immediately go into a homing attack if you jump while teetering on the edge of a platform? Seemed to fall to my death too many times while navigating cards because of this. (just as well the game gives out lives like they're going out of fashion).
Also the music is just plain bland. I mean don't get me wrong, I prefer it to bad guitar riffs and cheesy jpop, it's just sonic used to have great music (and did again briefly in sonic rush)...
Still not quite as good as Megadrive versions but better than anything that came after (except the first Sonic Rush).
Meaningless rating: 7/10 (so far)

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
I bought this on the 360 yesterday and I've LOVED every minute of it, up until I tried going for the Untouchable achievement! I can't stand all the criticism I've seen for this game and I think it'll end up being a very underrated game. I think the level design is great and I think every Zone was unique and the gimmicks worked well. I won't give away anything but there's a great aspect/gimmick in the Casino Street Zone that I absolutely love! Playing this makes me want to play other Sonic games and makes me very hyped for Episode 2!
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
Alright, finally managed to play the demo, and I must say I liked the game quite a bit. Everyone should at least give it a try before criticizing it.
However, I'm in no rush to buy it. I'll wait until all episodes are released so I can get them all in a bundle.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
I picked this up since I wanted to reward Sega for making a Sonic game that didn't have severe camera issues.
The title screen music is bizarrely awful but I haven't felt the music is especially noteworthy in a good or bad sense otherwise. Sonic's start-moving-from-a-standstill animation looks weird and wooden but no other visual complaints.
Gameplay-wise I'm having a great time and I'm damn glad I bought it.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
I found that Chaos Emeralds are really easy to get. With act select, unlimited special stage restart, and a limited number of exit icons (mostly focusing on time instead). The only unfortunate part is that Super Sonic isn't super helpful in later stages. Homing is a nice way to add a mechanic but like everyone has said, losing momentum when not pressing forward is disappointing. I wouldn't mind an Episode 2 but it really ought to have more originality with the zones, enemies, and music.

With a little less MASSIVE CONTRAST LEVELS on the graphics (is the artists screen set up with extreme gamma levels or something?) I'd buy this. If it was on a console. Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4
The remix is a little cluttery for my liking but it's definitely well above that of Sonic 4. I especially like how Sonic himself looks.
