OK, so what are the good cop/crime movies from the 80's? The grittier and more amoral, the better. I seem to remember one with Yakuza in the US that ended with the villian chopping off his finger to show honor to a particular clan, but then gets killed by the good guys anyway. I want to say it had Snipes in it, but I looked at his list of films, and nothing looked right. Not saying that film (whatever it was) was good, I just remember it.

Are you thinking of Rising Sun? I don't remember the movie too well, but it's got Snipes and yakuza.

EDIT: I just found the movie. It's Black Rain.

Black Rain!!!! That's it! I want to see that movie again.

Edit: I must have been thinking Snipes coz Sipes was in so many cop films from this period.

Edit2: Jesus christ, directed by Ridley Scott?

Ditto, I'd like to watch Black Rain again.
Ridley Scott rarely gets things wrong. Black Hawk Down is pretty awesome but I really don't know why he bothered to remake Robin Hood :?

watched Childen of Men the other night. pretty good movie with a great and realistic theme. Not the usual the world is going to end plot which really surprised me, and it was a future thats plausible. The 'rescue scene' where he walks through the building all the way to Key in one take was amazing.

It reminded me a of Soylent Green, the vibe I got that is. Really solid movie 8)

I watched Ong Bak: The Beginning (Ong Bak 3 to be precise.)

You can always count on a bit of Ong Bak for a good fight man, and there were plenty of those. :)

That's all that mattered, so it actually wasn't a bad watch.

Seriously downbeat ending though.

Love that movie. Has he made any other good films? (I know, I should just google it...)

Watched 30 Days of Night few days ago. Horror movie from 2007, take on vampires hustling an Alaskan town when there is no sunshine for 30 days. It was decent, the "vampires" had a lot of presence on screen, movie went for a sort of realistic approach and succeeded for most part, the ending... I dunno, I can't complain. Not scary scary, but laughable scary, like "OH! You're dead!" 8)

It kind of felt like a resident evil movie... mind you I haven't seen any RE movies except for Regeneration and the first one.

just watched Black Dynamite. Michael Jai White is a BADASS!!!!!! this was one of the best movies i've seen in a while, maybe this entire year. the action scenes were some of the best and funniest i've ever seen. i somehow spit up into my nose laughing when a car drove off a cliff and exploded in mid-air...before hitting the ground

the movie is genius. it's one of those few movies that i would not mind watching over and over anytime.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. Rob Zombie is clearly not constrained with animation and has created one incredibly awesome fucked up move in the style of the Ren & Stimpy revival. Deserves a watch just for the music, including once piece played to a cat fight that goes:

It's alright to Jerk off to cartoons,
the Japanese do it ever-ry-day.
So rub one out for the USA

I'm glad they're making a second movie. The cartoon looks like it will be pretty interesting too.

Back in the early 1990s, there used to be the annual Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation that would make the rounds in San Francisco. That also included the crazy and anything goes in the world of animation with the Twisted Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation. The stuff that's shown in Rob Zombie's The Haunted World of El Superbeasto is up to par with the insane stuff shown at some of the past Twisted S&M-FoA shows. Even the International Tournee of Animation events were cool to attend & watch the latest in indie animation -- not your typical Disneyfied animation stuff, folks.

Considering that Film Roman (whom did the animation of Rob Zombie's animated flick) is based out of South Korea, it's not surprising that they're the same folks whom do the animation for The Simpsons.

Combat Shock is a grim piece of work indeed... I just saw it again recently, afraid that it wouldn't deliver like it used to, but boy was I wrong, it's still smart and tough as hell. The director told me that he himself did the baby's weird crying by recording his own voice and pitching it. I recommend to check out his new movie, "Life Is Hot In Cracktown". It's a super rough narcotics drama, if you liked say Menace II Society, you'll most probably love this.

Finally saw Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D, and guess what? It's the BEST GODDAMN VIDEO GAME MOVIE yet. Easily.
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

I dug out my old VHS of Tetsuo: The Iron Man today. It's the first time I've watched this film for several years. It's still as bizarre, atmospheric and creepy as I recall. No one makes movies like Shinya Tsukamoto.

As promised, I've just finished watching Black Rain.
Ridley Scott was a bit too obsessed with dark rooms with large rotating fans creating a strobe effect in the 70s and 80s. Other than that, the film was still pretty good and Kate Capshaw looked classy.

Black Rain is an awesome movie. I love the dialog in it. I bought it on DVD a couple years ago. Another great movie is "The Yakuza" from Sydney Pollack.

Watched Predators yesterday. An interesting watch and a pretty good action flick. I see what people mean when they say that its a lot like the first movie. They pull scenes and even exact lines from it. The scene with the geek near the end felt really stupid and annoyed me a bit, but other than that I enjoyed it.

Not as good as the first 2 predator movies but better than the AVP ones. Even though I enjoyed AVP2 quite a bit. It just felt like this was missing something and I think it was the build up?

I just watched Combat Shock for the first time. Quite the bleak movie. Also, probably the most serious Troma movie I've ever seen.

Phenomenal soundtrack though!! One of Pino Donaggio's finest for sure!

Oddly enough, I actually listened to this very soundtrack on my way to work this morning. I haven't seen the film in at least a decade; I keep meaning to pick it up so I can re-watch it. The soundtrack is so dynamic, but I forget most of the film other than the frothing water and blood.
