New to ShMUPS - Any suggestions for a starting off?

Post by Demetori »

Hello, I'm semi-new to the whole ShMUPS scene. I have played them on and off since I was a child but never really tried to get good at them. The 2D graphic-style and rain of bullets always intrigued me with no end in sight. Like most people I'm a massive fan of the Cave series of games.

The only game I really ever got decent at (which isn't decent by the skill level I've seen of players here) was DoDonPachi.
I think I eventually could get to the third stage with no deaths and no bomb usage, this was after a day or so of playing a lot.
Not a ShMUP but I was fairly good at Metal Slug and could do 1 life plays of Metal Slug X.

I was wondering if there was any games that I can really start up on to raise my skill level?

Welcome to the forum!

I'm a bit new here myself, but have been playing these games for years now as well.
As far as recommendations go, the best thing I can tell you is to play as many games as you can and find what you like. Which systems do you prefer?
If you like PC games then I suggest you go to my site (link in my sig) and browse some of the free software available for the PC. I and several other forum members highly recommend "Blue Wish: Resurrection" if you're a fan of CAVE - It's freeware, and it's fantastic. Another great game to try is Crimzon Clover.

Welcome to the site and enjoy your stay!

I'll never understand why people feel the urgent need to create a thread about their arrival.

Sorry? There was no new members section and I just find it rude not to introduce myself to people.

No platform preference, I've got a Japanese Playstation 2 and a bunch of Cave games for it. One day I might invest in a Cave PCB.
Going to try out that game you suggested and will get back to you on it with my thoughts.

Oh I also just now remembered I really enjoyed Giga Wing 2. I like the mechanics in that one.

EDIT: I just tried that game, really enjoying it! Went straight to Hell Mode and can get to the second level with no deaths or bombs so far.
Will keep trying!

Hi Demetori
I am pretty new here also. People are very helpful here and more than happy to give advice on what to play , strategy etc..
I also have a jap PS2 and recently started playing Ibara
Its a pretty fun game if you have not played it..
But to be honest the difficulty level is a bit too much for me at the moment!!!!! :(

Ah, this is more leaning towards what ShMUPS I should try out first to help my skill level. I fixed up my original post and title a bit, hopefully it's a bit more appropriate now.

@crackfox

Have you tried Mushihime-sama yet? It has some settings that make it painfully easy.

I have been playing mushi a bit this week...
I like to play arcade, original mode as I think the difficulty is firm but fair..
Stage 3 is a real pain though...
I really don't understand how the scoring works on maniac mode????
You any good at mushi?

Oddly enough, I am good at Mushi. The more bullets the more I concentrate.

Definitely start with Mushi. I fucking love mushi, but hated ESP II. The only cave game I don't ever play on my shelf.

Did you like ESP 1 because I wasn't suggesting ESP 2.

I enjoy it, but I certainly don't think it's a good game for beginners.

On Wii get soldier blade, r type, star parodier and gradius 2 from pc engine. Get Gradius rebirth too.

If you have a non J 360 get espgaluda 2 and Mushi Futari 1.5, soon you will have guwange and raiden fighter aces as well and deathsmiles. Ikaruga / rtype can be got on 360 too.

If you have a ps3 well................

If you have MAME up, go play Mars Matrix. Also, that Crimzon Clover game people are talking about? Fuckin' relentless; love it.

If you're talking about using one specific game to improve your skills, I... don't know. So many different systems that different shmups revolve around. If you want to learn dodging, though, definitely play DDP Daioujou. For milking, play ESPGaluda, Ibara or a Raizing game.
