Hello. I came here to talk about the shooting games. I like buying them and playing them, they are exciting. Like many I expect, my first was Ikaruga but don't hold that against me!!!!!!!! My fave at the moment is Mushi 1.5, I am also playing Psyvariar 2, Giga Wing 2 and Under Defeat. I'm going to commit to posting my scores here as an incentive to get better. You all seem lovely.

Hey, I've not been a particular fan of shmups prior to recently, but a friend of mine has introduced me to the culture of shmups. I consider myself to be somewhat intelligent, but please tell me if I act rude or insincere etc etc. I have been a player of video games in general since I could hold a controller. I enjoy rpgs and the occasional platformer. I regret to say I am near totally new, and I am thinking of getting a saturn or dreamcast if I can find some English shmups. For now I will be working on Dodonpachi on Shmup mame as soon as it is flash drived to me. Suggestions of MAME shmups would be appreciated. Anyway, I hope to see you at one of the meets, and I hope to one day see my name on the leaderboards.

Till next time,
Chaos Angel.

P.S. is there a guide to posting scores?

Hi there,

some years ago I used to buy shump games and play them on my candy cab. Unfortunately I move to another city without the candy and quit of playing shumps.

The good news are that I am going to meet my old candy again and have some free time to participate in the forum.

See you around.

I feel I should reintroduce myself since I've been away for so long.

Ohayoo! Watashi wa Hoshino Yumemi desu!~

Ahem. Note that I'm not Japanese and I know very little Japanese, I just wanted to shoot out an introduction to my screenname. As well as being a sort of born-again shmup devotee, I'm a visual novel fan, and my favorite novel was Planetarian. With the English patch, Yumemi Hoshino was renamed "Reverie Planetarian," so here I am.

I started young: the first shmup I really remember buying was R-Type DX for the Game Boy, and I have faint memories of playing something in the 1945 family and Raiden before then. Lately I've been revisiting shmups I missed because I didn't have the console for them, such as R-Type Delta. Let it be said I'm still an R-Type fanatic.

Howdy new comers! Hope you have a pleasant stay, and enjoy the wealth of info that can be obtained here. Be sure to swing through the glossary section, it can help sort a couple of things out , and the search function can answer questions quickly when they are already available. If you are looking for info on posting scores, be sure to check the opening post of the score thread for the game that you are interested in. Each one is pretty much under the control of the person running it, and will tell you how they would like you to post scores, modes available, and cut off points for how many people are tallied. Some are rather popular, and may take a decent amount of skill to place on, but what is the point without a little competition! So, look around and try to get a little familiar with the pacing, and things to avoid before you just jump in and look silly for making a simple mistake. We're happy to have you on board! Have fun, play some games and don't be surprised if you get sucked in and find a new game to fall in love with.

Oh, I guess there was an introduction thread. I shall use it to egotistically talk about myself then discard it like the vermin it is... What?...
Anyways, My real name is Kyle. 16 years old and live in a slightly pathetic town called Parsons, KS.
Major things to about me is I love anime, I make techno music, and I'm the only guy within 500 miles that seems to like shmups (yes, it's very lonely). I also have good mind for video game ideas.

I thought I might as well introduce myself.
I haven't been playing Shmups for particularly long, so I'm not very good, but I can reach stage 7 in Hellsinker!
I'm looking forward to having a bunch of (usually) shmup-related conversations here!

Ahoy mateys! Welcome aboard this fine vessel! If your are interested in the inner secrets of the shmup genre, you have come to the right place. Have a look around, be sure to check out all of the different index areas, there's quite allot of info here, so you might want to try the search function if you are looking for something specific. Have a looky at the hardware section also, there's allot of how to type stuff in there, and some really great pics of people's set ups. Take a moment to look at the posting rules, it's always a good ideal to know what not to do. Please try to keep the scuttlebutt to a minimum, if your posts are ignored at first, it's probably a good thing, at least you aren't pissing people off. There are so many finer points to shooting games that it can be very intimidating at first, with some patient reading, you too can know the ins and outs, and all the secrets of scoring big! Have fun, try out some new games! If you are looking for a new game to buy, you may want to keep an eye on the trading section, it moves quickly though. Always happy to have some new blood around here, hopefully you won't have to walk the plank!

Just noticed this thread, thought I'd introduce myself and some of the shmups I like. I just got into playing shmups a few months ago, so I am very new to the genre. Before shmups I mainly played rpgs. It is a little strange going from one of the slowest genre of games to one of the fastest, but I am addicted.

I mostly shmup it up on my ps2 and xbox360. I do have a modded Saturn that can play Jap games, but I have yet to obtain a single shmup for that beast.

My favorites at the moment: Gradius V, Deathsmiles, Raiden Fighters Aces, Castle Shikigami 2, and Ikaruga (Still deciding about this one, I half love it half hate it.)

I am also a video game collector, and have been focusing on shmups for the last few months. I don't play the atari too often, but I have been discovering a wealth of great shmups that I had never heard of for the nes, snes, and genesis. I can't wait to discuss some shmups with you all! And of course, if anyone wants to throw some suggestions my way for some games to hunt down, feel free. There are too many shmups for me to find out about them all, especially on all the different consoles

Hello folks.

I'm a long time fan of games. My favorite genre would be turn based strategy games, but lately I've been really getting into scrolling shooters.

I recently saw a video of someone defeating the final boss of Cave's game "Mushihimesama" and it rekindled my interest in them. I thought to myself: "Wow, there are still game developers out there that make really gorgeous, meticulously crafted 2D games? This looks hard as hell, not like the player-friendly games that are popular now. I want to know more about this company." I was also inspired by the excellent Hi-Score/1CC games recorded by some players on youtube.

And it snowballed from there. I've since come to love many of Cave's titles, as well as many of the classic scrolling shooters, even though I have only played a few of them personally.

I'm a big fan of music, so that part of scrolling shooters really appeals to me. A lot of them have -awesome- music. Lately, I've been rocking out to Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Black Label's soundtrack (really long title...).

I'm also an amateur game developer. I hope that, once my skills are sufficient, I will be able to develop excellent games in the future. I would like to make at least one of them a scrolling shooter.

My all time favorite shooter is Raiden. I played Raiden Trad a lot on the SNES when I was a kid, and I still love the music.

I'm not so good at introductions, so PM me if you want to know more.

Greeting everyone! I am 27 years old and I have been playing videogames since I was a little kid. Even thought I have been always playing shmups (my first videogame I remember to have seen was a space shmup at the early 80s but I don't remember its name since I was too young) buI became more fanatic 1-2 years ago. I even got to the point of buying Xbox 360 recently mainly because of the great variety of new shmups (like Death Smiles and Otomedius) as well as re-releases of classic hits like Ikaruga (which is my favourite shmup but unfortunately I never had my own Dreamcast in order to enjoy it more and my pc is not strong enough to play Dreamcast emulator). I can't say there are specific games that made me a shmup maniac but definitely Ikaruga, Touhou and Parodius are rensonsible for having a better view for this genre.

Hey, my name is Ellert. I've been lurking these forums for a while now and finally decided to join. I've been gaming all my life, since my parents, in their infinite wisdom, bought me an NES when I was about 3 or 4. My introduction to shmups was probably Air Fortress. I can actually remember the night my parents took me to Ames to buy it after never getting a turn to play it at a friend's house. Going to arcades as a kid I always loved playing shootemups, I guess at that age it never occurred to me to seek out similar games in the genre or even remember any of the titles I played. I just knew those games were always a quarter well spent.
Last year I really started getting into shmups after my friend showed me Radiant Silvergun. It was one of the most beautiful, stressful and rewarding games I've ever played and I dived into the genre head first.
My favourite console of all time is the Sega Saturn. I'm proud to say I still have the original one I've had since I was a kid. I've got a US Sega stick and the Hori SS Fighting stick that a friend of mine picked up for me at Super Potato. I prefer vertical shmups and I've even got a nice CRT television dedicated for TATE. I run MACMAME and TATE the MacBook(hence the avatar), and use a Wii Hori Stick through Wiiji (bluetooth). I've got roughly 175 vert roms.. Last week I got a JTAG 360 to play the region locked games and the new DDP is blowing my mind. I got a Hori EX2 real cheap so I've been using that for now but I plan on picking up an EX SE eventually.
I have lots of love for Compile, Cave, Hudson and Treasure. Also, I dream of one day owning a Candy Cab.

I have always considered 2D shooters to be my second favorite genre after FPS, but after lurking here for a couple days I realized how little I actually know about the genre. Sadly, shmups were already on the way out of the mainstream by the time I got heavy into gaming around the late '90s - just in time to play shmups with actual FMV and the production values of the big titles, and just in time to miss them once they were gone. My name D-3 comes from the pilot in Philosoma, just because it was my introduction to the genre and D-3 was a noob himself on his first mission (which explains why he explodes so much).

I hope one day shmups will enjoy a resurgence like 2D fighters have, a 2.5D shmup on modern hardware with top tier production values would make my decade.

Hey there, been an on and off casual shmuper for several years but really got into it early this year when i quit smoking ( I DID IT !! ). Instead of using patches and gums i used bullet hell shooters to relieve stress. I thought myself a descent shmupist but that was before i saw some of you folks 1 cc lists. I tried lots of shooters but never dug one to the point of beating it like that, although i came close with Soldier blade on the PCE.
Among my favorite shmups these days: DoDonPachi - beat it with about 4-5 credits, no true last boss though :( And Cho Ren Sha ( Cant get past crazy stage 7 , or stage 0 as its called ). I also have a long term love story with Tatsujin as Truxton is the very first video game i ever owned on the genesis, i was 7 years old! Ended up beating it but that took me years. Also Tatsujin 2 is my personal reference to define HARD game. I am not usually very active on forums, but been reading stuff here for some time, thought i should give it a go and present myself and maybe meet other shmupers. My RL buddies think i am crazy to play these games.

Hell no! I am not touching these things ever again! I tried that before and did not last a day after cheating. I know better now, it will soon be a year since my last one, craving is now completely gone :D

Long time lurker, now hopefully a more contributing member, from the Swedish tundra. Primarily interested in arcade games but space and finance currently have me at a ghetto-tate setup with a stick and a low morale.

Primarily hoping to strike up some friendships in order to keep an eye on the afk-scene. Would love to attend shmup-meets around europe to make new enemies and also make the necessary contacts in order to get a candy cab in the near future.

That's my two euro-cents!

Okay, after posting for two months now on these boards, it's about time for a proper introduction.

My name is Andi, I live near the city of Zürich in Switzerland, and I'm 34 years old. I've been playing video-games almost all my life, with some on and off phases. My last "on"-phase began 3 years ago with an Xbox 360... My first gaming experience was on a C16, way, way back in time. I don't even remember what I played on this turd of a machine.

I've been playing shmups ever since I started gaming in the 80ies, but eventually lost interest in them, turning to some more story oriented games like Street Fighter II, hehe (Just kidding). I wasn't playing the shmups seriously back then, i.e., I wasn't really playing for score or the 1cc - I just enjoyed the nice graphics back then and the shits and giggles games of like Thunderforce III and IV, R-Type 3 and some Gems on the TurboDuo, like Gates/Lords of thunder and many more.

Around 2000, I discovered the beauty that is MAME and also played some shmups on it. It was also the first time I got into contact with CAVEs games, but I didn't take them too seriously, as I was focusing more on beat em ups.

I even went so far and built my first MAME-Cab in 2008, but it was for playing Beat em ups mainly. Beat em ups also woke my interest in modding and building my own joysticks.

My interest in Shmups rekindled in September 2010. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Espgaluda II for the iPad... As I was looking for some strategy for the game, I stumbled upon this forum, by the means of the shmup-homepage, thanks to malc for this place. Now, playing Eps II on the iPad really sparked the desire in me to play these games "properly". I also started playing seriously on MAME, especially EspRa.De., and got used to using an arcade stick for shmups. I then ordered MushiFutari and Esp II for the Xbox and boy... am I in for a treat now. Since September 2010, I've been playing shmups exclusively, as my interest in any other kind of game has been stomped since I realised the beauty, adrenaline and mastery that is playing shmups properly.

Also, I'm a complete dick, but generelly, I belong to the "rather nice people (TM)". :-D

Looking forward to chatting and discussing about this fascinating genre, with the occasional sarcastic/humoristic intermezzo.

Edit: Typos. But I liked them so much, I left them in the post. hehe.

Hi there. Been Lurking here for some time now and I figured I should join sometime so yeah.

Might as well introduce myself. Been playing shmups for about a year and 8 months now. Started off with Touhou but I’ve found myself playing more and more other shmups these days. Mostly Cave and other doujin stuff though.

Guess I’ll submit some scores now~
