PC Engine Duo-RX power supply questions!

Post by maxlords »

Ok, I just took the plunge on a Duo-RX off eBay with a new lens and a SCART mod. Price was right and both my regular Duos died the sound death of Duos. The system I'm getting however, has a 3rd party power supply. The standard power supply has different specs, and I want to be SURE this one will be ok for the long haul before I use it.

Power supply coming with the unit: 9V 2000mA

Official power supply AFAIK: 9V 1000mA

Official power supply I have laying about that I THINK is for a Duo-R but I'm not sure: 10V 1000mA

What should I use with this Duo-RX? The one he's sending? Or get a legit one (around $50)?

Here's what he said when I asked about the 3rd party one....the english is a little rough (Jp seller):
As you know DUO-R(RX) is official DC9V 1000mA. But my "DUO-R S/H FREE" is non-official DC9V 2000mA. Simple reason, weight is very light than ever. And so switching regulator type can very stably supply for console. This influence is great for works of the CD-ROM unit. OK?
Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks guys!

I would prefer the switching power supply with 2A. The seller's right about the higher reliability of switching power supplies. Also the 2A can't hurt. The Duo will only drain whatever power it needs...

I take it you're buying from Doujindance? I bought one of his modded Duo-RX's earlier this year and it has worked great. I've got a video of mine running on my NAC with one of Viletim's converters, in case you're interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3ki071tGF8#t=3m10s

Yeah, bought off doujindance....was very friendly and helpful....and FREE EMS!

No one else had prices near that for the quality of what he's selling.

That SCART to JAMMA....can you play with the cab buttons? Or does that require a lot more fiddling? Pretty neat looking either way. I'm thinking I'll probably get a SCART to HDMI box.

You can use the cab buttons, but you have to open up a controller, solder wires to the contacts and one ground, then run the wires to the scart/converter board. To get the "kick buttons" you have to run the wires directly from the controller's pcb to the buttons. I don't have a spare PCE controller, unfortunately, so I don't want to take my only one apart just yet. :) Viletim is working on a newer version of the converter that should be showing up soon. His thread is right here: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=28069
