Any ideas on a quick fix for this? I want to watch subtitled movies on the PS3 but it doesn't read SRT's. I've got FFDshow on my Mac, but it take hours and hours to attach an SRT - it's like it wants to re-convert the whole film.
Not sure if there's an option to just apply the SRT nice and quick?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Many thanks.

MeGUI has a built in .mkv muxer that does this. You might need to extract the audio using the HD Stream Extractor first.

i went through this same thing a couple years ago. was too much trouble, I just use my PC hooked up for subtitled stuff with SRT files. or just download hard coded stuff. i got one of the programs to work converting it, but the subs looked like shit and some of them were off time.

Re: What's the fastest way to combine an SRT with a video file?
I haven't done much investigating into what the PS3 can natively handle, but I'm willing to bet the only form of soft subtitling the PS3 understands is MPEG Timed Text, the one format that has virtually nonexistent open-source support. Most easy methods to attach subtitle scripts to video involve re-encoding the video with the subtitles rendered on top; so yes, it IS re-converting the entire film.
Alternatively, you may want to try setting up PS3 Media Server on your PC - it basically tries to do all the subtitle processing on-the-fly on the PC end and serve it directly to the PS3 without the intermediate encoding step. Can't say I've tried it personally so pointing you toward it is about all I can do...

Re: What's the fastest way to combine an SRT with a video file?
The PS3 cant handle MKV files, so never mind that route. That being said I do happen to know the exact solution to this, I'll have to get home and look up the name of the program I used first though. The only way to do this for avi files is to use a program that muxes in srt subtitles into them and puts out a new divx avi file. It does not transcode so it does its thing in a minute or two.Skykid wrote:Any ideas on a quick fix for this? I want to watch subtitled movies on the PS3 but it doesn't read SRT's. That being said the PS3 is absolutely shit with video files. A few years back I did my damnest to watch everything on it, but I quickly learned that was a very, very bad idea. It is very touchy, and has terrible file format support and I never managed to get local streaming of video to work in a way where the video did not skip every freaking second.
The best solution is to use your mac. Get a minidsplay port + totslink to HDMI converter for it from monoprice.com if it is an older model, or if it is a new model, just use the HDMI out and watch videos on it directly. Either via perian, #ugh# VLC, or use Plex.
I'll get back to you on the program details one I get home in case you are still going to wrestle with that imponent so called media device. Stick to gaming, SONY, that is when the PlayStation brand was at its best.
EDIT:
Also, if I remember right, that program is a winblows exclusive.
Re: What's the fastest way to combine an SRT with a video file?
The PS3 plays everything I throw at it besides anime MKV files. Streaming also works great.
I think you're thinking of the 360 being shit, it won't play things the PS3 plays for me.
The only thing I wish either of them played was the 720p/1080p mp4 files my Kodak video pocket recorder takes, I always have to re-encode them for either to play them, kind of sucks.
The PS3 is the closet thing to a set-top box I've ever owned. Bluray, dvd, netflix, rips, mp3, photo. Just awesome.

Re: What's the fastest way to combine an SRT with a video file?
Thanks for all the info. The one thing that's definitely confirmed is that the process isn't quick or easy and I haven't just missed a trick. Sucks, cos I watch a lot of foreign movies through the PS3 - it's my main source of movie watching.
I'll try the Winblows though, sounds interesting.
Thanks for the help guys!
