Yea, the panty shot after the first boss violates me as well. But I wouldn't say it's a bad thing.

There's some strategy stuff here - http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=7667

The Stage 2 boss is a serious pain. I usually resort to bombing my way through it.

I recommend avoiding the strategy thread linked above. It's more fun trying to figure things out for yourself. Of course, the result in my own case is a lame score, but I don't care much about that.

Played ibara a bit more...
I'm a big fan of cave, obviously this plays a lot different than any of caves other games but I really like it.
The rank system is unusual but cool...
Also watched a superplay earlier, suiciding 3 lives on level 1!!
NOt the kind of shmup I am used to but should be fun I think!!

Hope you're playing arrange mode! It plays a bit more Cavey than arcade does. Personally I can't stand arcade but arrange is awesome.

It plays like raizing because its programmed by the raizing guy s.yagawa , its also a spiritual sequel to battle garegga so if you are really enjoying it it would be in your best interest to check out garegga , armed police batrider and battle bakraid on mame now

Stage 2 boss feels like the hardest part of the game, it pisses me off to no end.

I'd also recommend taking at least a look at the Raizing games (especially Garegga) as there's a lot more information available for them which should make it easier to wrap your mind around their gameplay mechanisms (see Icarus' ST guides for starters). Ibara isn't as well documented sadly, and that might make it a bit trickier to start with that one.

Will probably give it another go

True but the world record holders run is on youtube now and the ps2 practice mode shows you a rank bar so it only takes a l;ittle common sense and studying to figure most things out on your own.

Just don't go looking at a Garegga guide to learn about rank in Ibara because it works completely differently.

Boss 2 Form 2 is basically the third hardest thing in the entire game to dodge, and if you are just starting the game and don't know how to manage rank/lives/bombs/options correctly or how to pick apart the form, it quickly becomes undodgeable.

Form 4 can also look pretty intimidating with higher rank and that doesn't help things at all. Course the trick to that form is to just tap slowly to the left and shoot off a couple wheels.

Forms 1 and 3 are just gimmick dodges but they still look really damn hard until you realize how easy they are.

Which is why I prefaced that entire post with 'if you are just starting the game and don't know how to manage rank and blah blah blah' or don't have it in mind to camp behind the first form or not shoot certain parts of the second form and so on.

It's a giant difficulty hurdle for beginners, especially if they don't understand rank control.

Beginners can try and stock hadou, and wipe out the first form with ease. The vapor trail can protect you from the second form attacks, hadou the third form right in the middle of the main body, and just sit in the vapor trail again for the last form.

Aside from the first form, most of the pattern dodges are just small taps through gaps - patterns are generally aimed at you, and if you make the smallest of dodges, you can make big enough holes to fly through (see boss form 4).

But yeah, agreed, Midi is quite a wall for beginners. Nowhere near as hard as Kasumi though.
