Nerd-umentaries

Post by PsychoGun »

Gotta say I've been on a tear with these lately. Saw King of Kong, Chasing Ghosts, and Frag.

All three are interesting as hell.

Anyone seen these?

None of those, but I've seen Gamer Br, about the gaming scene in Brazil.

Now, when it comes to computer nerdities, I'll suggest Cringely's Triumph of the Nerds (eps 1/2/3), about the birth of the PC era, and its internet-centric sequel, Nerds 2.0.1 (eps 1/2/3). Also, if you're interested in the Free software movement, be sure to check Revolution OS as well.

I haven't seen Frag, but i've seen the other 2.

King Of Kong was my fave, but CG was pretty good. I always liked that one guy who was learning Spanish for his new wife. That was odd, was it not?

Both arcade game documentaries of "King of Kong," "Chasing Ghosts" along with "Tilt!: The Battle to Save Pinball" have been shown in their entirety at the previous California Extreme shows with rave reviews coming from the audience. The CG doc was shown in its entirety on the cable channel Showtime2 back in 2009 a few times & managed to save it to DVD-R for posterity. When T;TBtSP doc was shown at a CAX show, it was followed by a very informative Q&A session with the guy responsible for creating it. He was asked if he had any plans to do anymore other related pinball documentaries and his answer was that this baby pet project of his would the last one for now.

Actually, this cool pinball doc comes as a dedicated two DVD disc set and has a chock full of cool extras to digress over, especially if your a pinball wizard like me.

There really needs to be a street fighter documentary.

There's always Bang the Machine which gets played sometimes at big comps like EVO, but it's never been released nor will it ever get properly released due to 9/11.

High Score is still the best gaming documentary I've seen.

Wasn't there some French series discussing shooting game technique and super-play walkthroughs?

Yeah, I saw it at Evo this year. TBH, I don't know why they don't just go ahead and release it as it is now. It was amazing.

According to Steve Wozniak, they mixed up some events, but the personalities are very accurate. Check here.

I just saw "High Score" and it is indeed awesome.

Any others with classic gaming?

I own both Tilt! The Battle to Save Pinball and King of Kong. Greatly enjoyed them both.

I enjoy these sorts of movies and will check out some of the titles mentioned in this thread.

The competition it follows took place in 2000, I believe. I could be wrong though. It was one of the first times a group from the US went to compete in Japan. So pretty much all the footage is around 9-10 years old now.

I just watched Tilt, very intresting, I sort of see arcades in another 10 years as been where pinball is now.

Almost asmuch as ild love to have an arcade cab ild also love a pinball table (unfortunatly i dont have the cash or the space for either). I think all though my life ive only ever played on a pinball machine just once if ever. Theyre just something never seen in my neck of the woods, now and back when i was a kid in the 90s.
