You ever wonder if somewhere out there...

Post by JBC »

... a real life shmup is happening? Really - there's billions and billions of stars and planets and galaxies and such. What if something like R-Type or Gradius is actually happening to someone somewhere? That would make life so much more interesting.

I mean, to find out about something like that. Like, we see light from thousands of years ago with our telescopes and satellites. What if we just suddenly picked up an intergalactic war off somewhere out there that happened. I mean, all those explosions have to give off a detectable amount of light - even light years away, right?

What would you do if you turned on the news and saw that astronomers had discovered something of that sort? Just how would you react?

I think it would instill a new hope in me for real... :)

Well, just so you know, the physics in space are far different than those of earth's atmosphere, so things like Space Explosions and Laserfire are not likely. Due to the vacuum of space first of all, and the logic that lasers are made from light energy, and for any sort of ship to dodge light is nearly impossible unless you're talking about moving at light speed, which is also not likely.

Sorry for bursting your bubble, but if anything were to happen along those lines, it would be on a higher technological scale than we humans of the 21st century could fathom.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Well that's common knowledge, man.

You're right about the explosions if we are still talking about a place with similar physics to our territory - but maybe in the REAL vast expanses - the places where things could work in a completely different fashion.

Even as such maybe the space around this certain area is filled with a gaseous substance like oxygen that would allow for explosions and such? Hey - it could happen! :)

There could be something similar to lasers that isn't actually using just concentrated light. I think that's why alot of creators refer to laser weapons as 'plasma' beams and such. It just makes more sense givin the way action progresses in alot of stories.

No one can say for sure what is out there - that's not what this is about, though. This is about what you would do - how you would feel.

So how would you feel if you found that it was real?

I'd give a big hearty salute to those brave pilots defending the universe from threats like the Bydo and the Bacterion empire! I feel all warm and fuzzy inside already!

Hehehe... that's pretty reminscent of the episode of Family Guy ("Emission Impossible") where Stewie enters Peter's body in a shrunken ship in order to destroy his sperm and stop a potential newborn... There's a nice little shmuppy scene to be found in it too

And somewhere off in a distant corner of the universe are the ruins of a civilization so advanced they dissapeared entirely... into the mystic "second loop" of time-space.

I'm not so good at this crappy "real-life" game - I'll probably lose at around stage 80. I'll be damned if I could 1CC this stupid thing. And why in the world would anyone want to access the second loop? Everything would just be harder! :P

hmm, I prefer to think that real life game has a long hitpoint meter that differs for each ship instead of 80 stages. At most it probably has 8 stages

The stages are really long, and for most people including me the gameplay is like Cave's, where you got to deal with random spam at every turn. I've known people who got Raiden aimed shots gameplay for their lives though, I salute them.

I too don't want to access the second loop of this game for sure.

What if we are on the second loop already, which is lame, and have forgotten about the fantastic first loop?

We should go see if the Rynex/Vasteel Original is orbiting the Solar system beyond Pluto by now. We'll just make sure the Guardian doesn't go bananas.

Hey, why do you even need to think of space?

60+ years ago our grandpas were shmuppin' it out over Europe and the Pacific.

Capcom even made some games about it.

Dammitt, we're all stuck in one big long ending sequence. But what happens when it's over? Are we taken to a second loop or just a highscore board?

As pointed out, just the 'sperm to egg' level was no doubt supremely challenging, and like that last stage in RSG, you can't shoot or use a bomb. Holy crap!

I really like TGK's final credits. Yes, that's exactly what happens.

  Exactly, and who the heck would find out about it anyway? Certainly not our ever-incompetent Need Another Space Administration.

Yes, I know the shuttle launch this morning went off well, but IMO that's in spite of NASA's efforts, not because of them. They waved a major safety issue before the launch, the morons. :

Sure, this could possibly be happening somewhere in space, given the vast number of galaxies and planets that exist in the universe, but considering that the worlds largest space agency is content to play Russian Roulette with people's lives, IMO, we'll never even know.
