Bluth should have stopped with Secret of NIMH or actually followed it up the films with equal or greater worth. Sometimes animation feels like such an absurd false hope. You need every level of the thing to come together exactly the right way or it all becomes bullshit. So many horrible animated films out there that I like based on some particular animation, but can't stand the actual film. Too bad the only way to make art like that is to sell out...oh, the irony!drauch wrote:its like don bluth making land before time and an american tale and then saying PISS OFF and directing

Re: I'm drunk thread!
Wait, what?????? The same guy who did Happy Feet? How is he involved in this picture. This is the same man who did the MAD MAX trilogy, as well as produce the first Babe film, and direct the second (which is a hodge-podge of garbage and disturbing imagery for children). Mad Max is essentially life for me. Since I was like, 16, I have been saying I wanted to get fit and be like Goose in the first film. I don't want to admit how many years that has been now. Holy shit. I am absolutely smashed but yet I can type better than I did in the last post I made. George Miller is the blokes name, and he used to be God to me. So shit, the same bastard that directed a huge tripe of garbage is also affiliated with the same twat who ruined my cinematic experiences? Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome is the ultimate cash-in of life. It is The Road Warrior re-made, but with pop-celebrities (Tina Turner) and less violence. Still, the film is pretty good, yet nothing on the original two films.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN is one of my favorite films EVER. Oliver Stone can sod off for all I care, but the writing of the film is phenomenal to say the least. Arnold is the goddamn man, even though he doesn't carry the "stone cut mane" of the original Robert E. Howard stories. Still, even though the film is lacking purely in hair styles, it's one of the best goddamn films ever, and also helped create my childhood, and possibly even my tastes for everything in the present. The film is bloody well GOD TIER.
Sailor Moon rules, as well. (Just watched some). This is probably the most drunk I have been in the past couple of weeks, yet I type better than some of the other days. FUCKING DOGS WON'T SHUT UP NEXT DOOR. Fucking fleas on my goddamn cats are pissing me off. Gonna buy some shit tomorrow to get rid of those fucks. Fucking hell. Fuck Siphonaptera in the ass. I love Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and my favorite, Hemiptera, but those other wankers who bite my felines can PISS OFF. I need (personal).

I edited my other post. Apparently the connection between happy feet and this film is tentative. It looks like one of the executive directors is the same on both films. I hate that shit. The same way they convinced everyone Peter Jackson was somehow involved with District 9 (though D9 ended up being a good film.)
I'm agree the guy at the helm makes this film troubling, and I'm sure whatever might have been good in the childrens' books its based off of have been mangled. I was just considering how they lopped off the ending of Golden Compass that might...MIGHT have actually made the film good...or at least make a little more sense. So, yeah, going into this with no delusions.
Mad Max isn't my life, but Road Warrior is one of the greatest action films every made.

Why does 1982 have so many good films?
Blade Runner?
Road Warrior?
The Thing?
Plague Dogs?
Quest for Fire?
Conan the Barbarian?
Secret of NIMH?
Fitzcarraldo?
Tenebrae?
Others might list ET, Tron and Dark Crystal from this year. I might secretly mention the Last Unicorn.
1982, what's got into you?
Edit: Crap, road warrior might be 81, but still...it belongs to 82!!!

Holy shit, Cmoon! What have you done to my night? I fucking fell on the floor in my kitchen while I was trying to feed my cats and laid there for a good few minutes. Bloody hell, you have named some of my favorite films in that list, with Secret of Nimh the only film I need to rewatch, as it has been a long time. Werner Herzog, Dario Argento, Jean Jacques Annaud, JOHN CARPENTER'S THE FUCKING THING (my, er...someone in my life who was dear to me bought me a fantastic shirt for this film), and bloody Blade Runner (tears in the rain, eh?). Fucking PLAGUE DOGS was the movie I bought a region free DVD player for. Own TWO posters of this film. This movie is one of the most depressing movies ever made; yet at the same time, it is such a great animated art piece. SHIT CMOON, you have some damn fine film taste. 82 was the best year ever it seems! Oh piss on hell, I am going to go pass out. Thank you for making my night chock full of cinematic pleasures and cherished moments!CMoon wrote:Why does 1982 have so many good films?

Re: I'm drunk thread!
Have you seen the extended, original version of Plague Dogs? (the director's cut) that's like 12 minutes longer? Nobody cuts animation anyway, it's two expensive, but the idea they not only lopped off 10-12 minutes, and no one even bothered to try to preserve it. The director's cut is Martin Rosen's personal copy and of course looks very dingy compared to the cleaned up version. Someday, maybe, someone will restore it. Anyway, yeah, it's one of my favorite films.
Anyway, don't blame me, blame 1982.
Oh, interesting enough, all these dark films out of 82 in general met a lot of criticism not just from critics but from the studios themselves. Obviously Plauge Dogs was edited, Blade Runner had the forced happy ending and voice over, The Thing--from what I've heard--upset people both in and outside the studios and that Carpenter had to make some 'nice' movies afterwards.
Yeah, I think Plague Dogs and The Thing are my favorite from that last, but we haven't seen years like that for a long time. Where are the good movies?

Yeah, I had to buy a region free DVD player so I could get that Plague Dogs Region 4 DVD that was FINALLY uncut. It's insane they tried to turn such a depressing book/movie into a kid's film, essentially. Ya know, I've actually never watched the "happy" ending from Blade Runner. I've read about it and I know what happens, but I just never watched it. Pretty silly.
The Thing was a film I grew up with, and damn, not many films have created such fine sci-fi horror! What ever happened to John Carpenter? So many good films...Assault on Precinct 13, They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape From New York, The Fog, Halloween...and then he went to crap. I guess the same could be said about most of the directors of the time. I mean, look at Wes Craven, Dario Argento, Sam Raimi, etc. I mean, sure, everyone at one point loses their touch, but these folks just completely changed. David Cronenberg still makes decent flicks, at least.

Re: I'm drunk thread!
Tried to make a gin and tonic tonight, but it went to utter shit. I opened the tonic and it fucking blew up and scattered my kitchen with carbonated shit. I really couldn't believe it. It was practically surreal on how much tonic water sprayed throughout my kitchen. It pissed me off to some degree, yeah. Pretty sauced on some straight whiskey as of now. Played some Street Fighter II today and realized I have lost any skill I once had; or, I realized I never had any to begin with. Have to work in 8 hours. I am not looking forward to it. I am stuck in the past. Usually when I drunkenly type, I realize I do it with one eye closed. Interesting. I wonder why. Yes, I am drunk, but I wonder why I close one eye to type. I guess it is easier to focus on the screen than with both eyes. Thinking all night of playing Progear no Arashi, but I didn't. What a waste. I haven't read for a week or so. I forgot how long it has been. I am re-reading all of my favorite things ever. I am re-reading Nausicaa: of the Valley of the Wind, and then I suppose I will re-read Preacher, Berserk, Watership Down, and then Swamp Thing when they re-release all of the hardcore copies. Blooooooooody hell. Fred Ward was a cool dude. It is a shame he didn't do many things. Tremors was the shit. I still need to see Remo Williams. Drunkenly texted a friend last night and told him that if he told anyone we spoke that he would perish. haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. I need to get huge. I need to be like Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star. I want to invoke fear in others, without acting upon such a presence. I want to be like fuckin' Franco Nero, Fabio Testi, Guts, John Rambo, or Chow Yun Fat. I want some food. I have none. I didn't buy chips and salsa like a week ago at the store because I was lazy. SHIT. I wish memories could be erased. Relatively well. It sucked not being able to smoke (I should quit anyway) for a few days, but I did all the right things and had barely any pain after the third/fourth day. I felt pretty shitty and it wasn't comfortable for the first little while, but yeah. Didn't have any problems.

For some reason, last night was the first night I tried to play a shmup drunk. I typically don't game when I'm drinking, because I imagine I lose my edge, even though I already am terrible.
Anyway, it was DDP Daioujou on the PS2, and it was one of the most fun times I've ever had drinking. I would start laughing out loud when I managed to dodge a pretty decent barrage, and I think I fell in love with the third stage.

Your shmup playing might actually improve with one (or perhaps two if your really beefy) drinks. Takes the raw edge off and lowers tension. You relax a little more and slip into the natural rhythm of the game. Any more than that though and it becomes impossible to play well.
Anyway, I brewed today (despite being sick.) Made 10 gallons of a clone of Dogfish Head's Indian Brown Ale. I don't even remember if I like the beer, but I had the recipe kicking around. Brewing went really smooth, I feel like I've got my system mostly worked out, though cooling down the wort still takes too long (almost an hour!)
Drinking Dogfish Head's Palo Santo Marron which I'm really enjoying. 12% aged in wood barrels. Almost like a black soup. Not what many people would call beer, but it hits the spot before I call it an evening (yeah, being sick means going to bed before 9pm...)

Dude, making your own beer rocks...IF you like fancy craft beers. I mean, for everyone who likes bud/miller/coors...even heinekin which is like a million times better still than the unholy trinity of budmillercoors, those beers basically sell really damn cheap and you will never beat their production prices. On the other hand, if you like drinking fancy shit...if you rinse out your beer glasses with sam adams before putting a real beer in there (I actually like sam adams...), then brewing is for you!
I've made two 10% beers in a row, and I think I can push 12% without switching to champagne yeasts. It's really satisfying and you can make complex beers with a pretty simple set-up (though better equipment is alway helpful.) The real reward though is filling a glass after work from your own tap. Talk about self-medicating!!!!
