STGT 2010: Raiden Fighters 2 thoughts

Post by Skykid »

Put away your touhou, lock up those lolita dresses, a man shmup is in town. :)

I figured it would be nice to discuss this one as the week goes on rather than clutter up the high score thread. For anyone looking to unlock all the ships, Twiddle's guide here does the trick:

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 00#p261900

I know some people are having trouble with Mame emulation too, so any pointers here would be appreciated.

My ancient Mac will only run it in an old MAME build. Unfortunately, that build doesn't draw half of the graphics. ("Not 100% accurate" my ass.) It's actually rather comical to shoot enemies with invisible bullets. Anyway, the game is unplayable that way. Sorry, team.

Can we have only games that work in older (or non-Windows-based) MAME builds too in next year's STGT, please?

This. I was looking forward to this week too. I thought that Gunbird 2 was a sure thing :(

Good call, I was kind of thinking the same.

I'm looking forward to learning this game some more :)

I've really grown to love the Raiden Fighters series and this game is the one I've spent the least time with. It'll be nice to spend the week playing on my television in a nice comfy chair instead of at my computer.

Yeah I can see that. It's a preference thing though, personally I love the game's outright aggression. I like my shmups to have guts about them, and everything about RF2 ticks the boxes.

Man shmup: check
Bombastic soundtrack: check
Insane rank: check
Medal collecting: check
Massive explosions: check
One of the best chase-the-train stages ever: check
Hell diving: check

It's got it all, and I haven't even got off stage 3 yet! :)

It's a bit of a pisser that it won't emulate very easily though. One of our best players has already bowed out this week. :(

I'm just glad I don't have to bother with MAME this week. I can toss in my RFA disc on arcade difficulty and 54fps(true) and go that route. The hidden ships that I wasn't aware of are a neat trick. Nothing like bringing a fairy to a man shmup

Damn right, that train is one of the best reasons to play it.

Is there a way to play it with sound AND autofire? Or does mameui32 support autofire somehow?

It's better than MM and Xexex, but seems worse than Cyvern. Mainly thanks to the screen becoming a giant clusterfuck where you are trying(and failing) to tell apart medals, bullets and your own ship.

Okay, figured this part out. Bit of a pisser there is no way of properly changing the formation with Judge Spear - not collecting anymore slave icons is pretty impossible at times.

I made Shmupmame v2 work with the rdft2j2 rom. It didn't work with the regular rdft2j.

Depending on your sum of lives and bombs, you'll get different formations after picking up a 3rd slave powerup. If the sum changes while you have a formation out, it will change only after you grab another slave, and both slaves need to be alive. If your ship has a charged attack (non-secret ships), they'll take a formation after using a charged attack.

Is there an advantage to adding autofire, other than just not having to tap A all the time? I don't see an increase in firing speed comparing the two methods, and you don't have to tap A that rapidly anyway.

I find games without autofire, my fingers tire quicker and causes me to break more often from play sessions. A minor gripe, but its something that matters a lot to me so I enjoy having autofire when I can.

I bought Raiden Fighters Aces on 360 2 years ago and is still the most played game in my elite. RF2 is definitely my favorite RF game. My 3rd favorite shmup of all time!!!

I love this game. Though it is easier to score in, compared to RF1 and RFJ.
I adore the whole series though.
