Minecraft -- Free Weekend

Post by captpain »

This game is super-duper, and due to technical difficulties during a recent update, the full version is free to play for the weekend. There's a higher likelihood of encountering bugs and/or issues right now, but at least you can get a sample of what the game does.

It's another of those massively addictive time sink games. I bought it Thursday and I absolutely love it.

This game is a black hole from which time does not escape.

The game runs on java, so it requires no graphics hardware, any computer and any operating system will run it. No excuse not to try it!

It was much more enjoyable during indev when monsters were FUCKING EVERYWHERE. Ever since infdev came out the monster spawning has been lame even on hard :(

When did you last play? There are tons of monsters all around my stronghold every night, so many that it's really not even worth it to go outside. I'm on Normal, even.

Yeah, I have no trouble getting killed by skeletons.

I'm grumpy as can't play right now - for some reason my copy won't run off the .exe but works fine in-browser. I have the latest version of Java ... I'll try dling the latest nvidea drivers, see if that helps.

Gah! I wish I had good internet. This game is seems imperative to play once I get such a thing back.

The multiplayer isn't up right now (and it's still very much unfinished anyway) so get it and play some single player!

I haven't been this sucked in by a game in a long time....

Yup, Windows gives me:

'Could not create the Java virtual machine.'

Won't even start up.
Downloaded the latest nvidia drivers and nothing changed.
Neither of the .exes on the site work.

Been spending way too much time on this over the past couple of days. Took a few tries to get a reasonable layout where I could get established, but I think I've finally got one. Of course, there's the problem of finding your way back to the spawn point when you go off wandering.... I figure this should take care of that...

And it really looks cool at night...

Not terribly practical. The main trouble I'm still running into is that it's just a pain to find enough iron to do anything with.

Protip: the clouds always move north, and the sun always sets in the west/rises in the east. Until you've built a compass, you can navigate very effectively with this knowledge (made even better with a gigantic becaon, like Vexorg's).

Had absolute no idea what the game was about.

I've watched movies of the game, with people experimenting things.

I'm truly amazed.

Seriously, great, great stuff.

There's a Halloween update coming for this game. You can now visit Hell.

I decided to play the free version for the first time today, and wow this game is cool. I love how big the underground world is - it's HUGE! You can easily get lost.

I've heard so much of this game that I thought I'd try it. What's the point? You walk around destroying blocks and placing more blocks? I don't get it.

Well, you smash blocks, build tools, build structures.

This video really impressed me.

Pro tip: Build a large straightup waterfall and drive a boat into it with you inside. You defy the laws of physics, rotate 90 degrees and get flung up as high as possible into the sky.

I've done it myself, and I can host a SMP server if anyone's interested in trying for themselves.

I haven't done much multiplayer yet (I've been trying to play on a server some friends are running, but I keep getting disconnected every time I try to build something) but I might be interested in playing if someone wanted to do a Shmups server.

I can do that, depends heavily on timing however, so it wouldn't really be an official 24/7 server unless one of the admins here figures something out.

I guess I'll just post the IP here when it's ready and hope it stays mostly exclusive to my own and SHMUPS.system11 member control.

Finally figured out the solution to the network card issue I was having so I can build on MP servers now without constant disconnects. The private server I've been playing on has been around for only about a month, but the sheer amount of stuff people have built on it already is ridiculous. Still in the process of getting established over there, but I did manage to put together this lighthouse over the course of roughly an afternoon or so. Next task is to get rid of the mountain under it and have it floating in air...
