While I doubt it will be seriously considered for the logo, there are actually a couple of panels there I like. Cute!
I like this logo too, seriously.
same, I had already planned on saying this before I saw this post:

this is what needs to be used for the wiki

I'm not even sure if this thread is active, but I'm sick as hell and got bored this morning so here's a few simple and quick ideas:

As cool as the Salamander inspired one is, I'd like something less game specific. How about one that has a lot of ships different ships on it, so that none of them really stand out and there's better representation of the different kind of shmups.

I don't know how well the board software can handle it, but how about going all pouet.net with the logos and have a selection of the good ones from which a logo is randomly selected always when the page is refreshed?

That one on the bottom is great. I don't know if it's better than the current design, but I sure live those bullets

We'll put them right next to the penis ships--I mean R-type ships.

Here's a serious critique, and I hope it is helpful:

That design is so basic that there are really only two elements: The word "shmups" and an optional second element: Something that looks like a flying insect (being objective) or with knives poking out of it, or an insignia out of Star Trek (high contrast + pointy = distracting, suggests and represents "evil" and is visually arresting or jarring more than the round shapes and blur in the current logo), and a variation on a burst pattern of bullets (?) underneath (if you look at our current logo, we already have that).

Related general thought: I think that a logo that stays on the Forum page all the time does well to blend into the background like the relatively unoffensive orange medallion of the current logo.

The gradient-fill text really does have more than a passing resemblance to Microsoft Word Art c. 1997 (or Illustrator, I know, I've used that too; we you just put a gradient inside a boxed font) and there's not much to be said except that it's apparently a filler. If that is the central part of the logo, it will have a critical relationship to the other elements in the graphic and so a design for the word should be locked down. Maybe your idea is amazing but the blueprint doesn't suggest that.

Are you just making these for fun or are you trying to be seriously considered? There is a thread for creative stuff in OT if you just want critiques.

(p.s. I like your user avatar, though I would add some specks and things to it. It reminds me of the old Hammer films stamp logo.)

Sorry for being protective of the Forum and bursting your bubble.

No thanks. I'd rather the board's memory cache usage stayed at the minimum, but what's more important to me is not having a jarring theme change every time.

There is some question about the logo being a point of "pride." I think this one is both a good representative of the Forum, of a type and period of shooting games, and is a good balance between not being weak but not being so eye-catching that you can't focus on what you're writing (not that I have a problem with this, but it's worth considering that some people do).

I was just bored and thought I would throw a couple of ideas out with what I could do in 15-20 minutes. I dislike the current bubbly logo font, and thought something more solid/structured would be nice. Also I just threw out the idea of incorporating it into a ship design. This was just to generate ideas/concepts, not to showcase final designs.

What I would really like to do is recreate the current logo's background (sphere and bullets) in Solidworks (3d) to keep it familiar but give it a new look. Wouldn't take long. Something like this:

Image

Of course you could add colors and all of that business if you wanted. And no, there isn't any word art in this one.

I really like the last one.

I'd be interested in taking this project on but my vectoring skills are pretty lame. and I like to do everything by hand. Here's something I just finished recently:

I really like the idea of having a logo with famous shmup sprites though.

R-Type. It doesn't get any more memorable than that.

The other's are Xevious, Gradius, Life Force and Thunderforce, right?

Really nice stuff, keep it up!

I tried out the suggested program earlier in the thread (mtpaint). Bear in mind this is my first time using that program, doing pixel art, designing ships etc etc....
The font is a standard one in the program too, took me an hour up until that point so couldn't be bothered designing my own!

I know its no way near as good as some in the thread - but like I say, its my first time. The bottom ship was meant to be point left, but couldn't find how to flip the image? So just left it.

Dodonpachi. Maybe the kanji could be replaced by
S
H
M
U
P
S
in vertical style, and the "forum" could cross over horizontally.

As mentioned before, an logo in the R-Type font and style would be awesome. And btw, when will the winner be chosen? And why is this thread still a sticky?

So we can make annual jokes for the deadline coming closer:
8) Closing date for competition is the end of March.
Holy shit only 1 1/2 months to go!!

If I had my way, this forum got a complete design overhaul, a CSS sheet that took away some of the more awful PhpBB standards, replaced the terrible "Win3.1-screensaver" background, and got a logo with a stylized font that wasn't trying to look like a shooter title graphic, existing or not (though nimitz's submissions are actually quite awesome) - over the top gradients and outer glows were never pretty.
But I guess the "1998 Netscape Navigator" look is one of this site's charms.

For this reason alone, this "competition" deserves to run a few more years.

I can't believe this is my first post on this forum (been lurking for years)
Will probably be my last one, too. :)

Hey, I've been lurking around here for years. Every now and then I check this thread to see if some day we will have a winner. I'd like to try my hand at a design, but I'm not sure if anything will come of it. I was thinking of something similar to the design on my own site http://con-trast.com/. (Please ignore the characters surrounding the logo.) I think that sticking with the pixel art look of the logo is a great idea, but I'm thinking twice as big as the current logo. Maybe find a single theme (series) and stick with it.

If you guys really do want to change your logo, I'd be more than happy to throw something together in my free time.
