DS shmups
DS shmups
Can anyone recommend any good DS or DSi shmups?
I've played Metal Torrent and Cosmos X2 on DSiWare and also have Nanostray 2. Couldn't get into Metal Torrent. I really liked Cosmos, it was something different from your usual shmup. Nanostray was alright, never got around to finishing it tho.
Any other suggestions for good ones?

It's expensive nowadays but Ketsui Death Label is awesome.
Space Invaders Extreme is great too.

Big Bang Mini is sort-of shmup-ish and very inexpensive. Really easy, though.
Re: DS shmups
Yeah big bang mini is pretty special, enjoyed it for what it was. Shmups are kinda slim pickin's on the DS though. Like others have mentioned Ketsui Death label is cool as well as space invaders extreme. I thought Nanostray was ok but didn't really think it was worth a purchase. Other than that if you have access to an R4 or some other chip there's always NES shmups you can play and even a few from the neogeo that's been mentioned on here before. Anymore most of what I play on my DS is NES games on the go (Nothing like a little Recca on lunch break) so it's always an option for ya.Herr Schatten wrote:Big Bang Mini is sort-of shmup-ish and very inexpensive. Space Invaders Extreme 1 and 2 are by far the best shooters on the system.
Don't bother with Ketsui: Demo Label.

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Ketsui Death Label is head and shoulders above the rest of them. Geometry Wars Galaxies and XG Blast! work well on the DS too, and Big Bang Mini really is loadsa fun if you're handy with that stylus

Gradius on Konami Classics gets my vote
Re: DS shmups
Cosmos X2 is good? I saw the trailer and it looked bloody boring and generic, what's the game like?

XG Blast. Poke poke poke, this GW clone seems okay.
Re: DS shmups
If you're a shmup fan, Easy mode is going to be boring, but Hard's going to give you a good challenge. It's different from the usual stuff - you pick two weapons and get a life bar for each one. If you get hit, the weapon you're using takes damage. If you kill something, the other weapon heals. It works well to keep things interesting. You get different shields for each weapon, and each one has a trick to it. I had a lot of fun with it. I'm not complaining for $5.originalz wrote:Cosmos X2 is good? Re: DS shmups
I'm thinking of trying Geometry Wars or XG Blast. They seem similar in style, which one do people favor?
Re: DS shmups
XG Blast is quick fun but Geometry Wars Galaxies has got a lot more to it with a Galaxies mode that has lots and lots stuff to earn and unlock, and a Retro Evolved mode with online scoreboard and a really excellent two-player option. Also the inclusion of black holes in Geometry Wars makes the gameplay a bit deeper so if I had to choose I'd go for Galaxiescloud77 wrote:I'm thinking of trying Geometry Wars or XG Blast. Re: DS shmups

Also yeah ketsui Death label is the best DS game there is. Period. Well worth the higher price, Altho if u buy the flash cart for Neo DS.............................But i also think cave should be supported so ur call

Re: DS shmups
Nanostray 2 has a nice R-Type feel. It's the one I've enjoyed the most on the DS. Of course, the DS is not really about action games, though. The library is so much more interesting if you're into rpgs and srpgs.

Uh, Metal Slug 7? Castlevania? Contra 4? Kirby Super Star Ultra?professor ganson wrote:Of course, the DS is not really about action games, though.

Exactly, a very short list indeed, relative to the enormous DS library.MathU wrote:Uh, Metal Slug 7? Castlevania? Contra 4? Kirby Super Star Ultra?professor ganson wrote:Of course, the DS is not really about action games, though.

Re: DS shmups
Looks like I'm going to be the first one to recommend Bangaio Spirits. Huh.
Also, Meteos - not a shooter, but it has a lot of elements in common and it's a fantastic game.
EDIT: Oh, and Knights in the Nightmare. Odd hybrid of SRPG and shmup. One of the most arcane games I've ever played, but worth it if you can penetrate it.

IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Re: DS shmups
I think I remember Math U posting on forums from around the time of the Radio Allergy cancellation, and he's never been a fan of Cave games. Can't blame him for not liking a narrow stripped down Cave game.
I'll agree that both of the Space Invaders Extreme games are extremely good. Metal Torrent looked fun, but I've never had a chance to play it.
The Nanostray games are an interesting case. The first one had gorgeous graphics, but so many design flaws that i couldn't recommend it to anybody. The second one fixed a lot of the gameplay flaws but just seemed boring to me. As did Big Bang Mini. And Geo Wars? I think it might be playable with a thumb stylus (which I have yet to obtain) but otherwise I prefer playing it on a television.
Let's not forget about Ketsui Death Label. I have it, and it is well-implemented for what it is. Very smooth, lots of bullets to dodge. I haven't played it enough to grasp the scoring system, so I don't know how much replay value is present. I do know that I could not stop playing it when I've put it in on some short car rides, but my DS has been hosting RPGs 90% of the time, so I never got to play it very much yet.

Re: DS shmups
Ketsui is awesome on the DS, I fucked around on it during a recent trip overseas. Great time waster. Shame you can't plug in a stick to the DS though, haha, the tiny D pad just isn't as accurate, don't know how those fuckers play death mode on it and get 1CCs.
I'd say it's the best portable shooter ever, unless you count turbo stuff on an express.

Haha yeah it's great fun, but to hell with the DS's d-pad with Recca!

Re: DS shmups
The odd thing about the Shinen shumps is that each one fixed flaws from the previous game (counting Iridion II GBA as the game before Nanostray), but introduced new flaws. I think overall, I like Iridion II the best out of their shumps, but they all have issues keeping them from reaching the same level as games like Gradius Galaxies, Space Invaders Extreme 1 and 2, or Steel Empire.MR_Soren wrote: The Nanostray games are an interesting case. You have 20 lives and auto-bomb by the time you unlocked death label mode. How can you NOT be able to 1CC it?PsychoGun wrote:the tiny D pad just isn't as accurate, don't know how those fuckers play death mode on it and get 1CCs.
