Just curious to know as i doubt anything can keep up with the cave crew, but if there are some other good ones, please let me know. :D

Homura is good. Gigawing Generations is playable. Stay away from XII Stag.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself
<Despatche> you've been a thorn in the shmups community since the beginning, you're largely responsible for the horrible face of modern speedrunning

Psyvariar revision
+
Homura
= MUST HAVES .
Seriously cave are overated , mostly great aesthetics with the most god awful scoring systems ever bar ibara and espgaluda , Homura even made me regret importing a jap ps2 for the cave stuff ended up replacing it with a PAL ps2 after it died and a copy of homura for a tenner and psyvariar for 2 quid .Plenty of psikyo and gradius goodness to as previously stated .

If you can play Japanese PS2 games, you can as well play PSX ones on your PS2. As for verticals, in my book Cave has precious little on Sonic Wings Special (play it on Hard and avoid the PAL version) and Raiden DX. There's plenty of excellent horizontals as well: R-Types, Parodiuses...

The way out is cut off

ROBOTRON easily surpasses Gaijin Punch and even PC Engine Fan X these days. He's probably my favourite poster by now.

Best welcome posts to newbies I've ever seen on the web!

None of these have been mentioned yet.

Double Shienryu
Fantasy Zone Complete Collection
Gunbird 1 & 2
Shooting Love 2007
Radirgy
Triggerheart Exelica
Chaos Field
Shikigami no Shiro
Raiden III

Probably a few more of which I can't recall.

also worth mentioning are the arcade ports of Sonic Wings, Terra Cresta, Time Pilot, and Scramble playable in vertical screen format. Thunder Cross and Thunder Force VI are also a must haves for horizontal action.

Gradius V and Psyvariar Revision are the best imo. Gunbird collection is good. Also theres a great compilation of fantasy zone if your into that.

Psyvariar 2 Ultimate Final is where it's at (and that you don't have the dreamcast or xbox versions)

The Star Soldier remake is pretty good, but it won't work with digital controls, so most sticks won't work with it.

Triggerheart Exelica needs to just hurry up and release itself in a complete version.

Opening vid and story mode from the PS2 version (with the new character)
Arrange mode from the Dreamcast

all as one non-XBLA 360 release.

Buy the Taito Legends 2 collection. Like half of the disc is shmups.

Darius Gaiden
G-Darius
Raystorm
Metal Black

etc.

There's also the PS2 remake of Silpheed.

Of course, Castle Shikigami 2. And yes, you want the US version.

It's essential. Pass on Shikigami 1. 2 is the best.

Worth it for the original game (ported from ST-V/Saturn) which is heaps of fun.

The sequel sucks, IMHO.

I had a lot of fun with Shikigami 1 (Mobile Light Force 2) but Castle Shikigami II is better. Probably my favorite non-import shooter on PS2.

Gradius V is also pretty cool, but the pacing is a bit slow.

Also consider PS1 games like Strikers 1945 which is actually Strikers 1945 II and Mobile Light Force which is actually Gunbird. R-Types is also a good one.

Finally, on the imports, I have Homura and Twinkle Star Sprites (plus some Cave stuff) and they are both really fun. Psyvariar and Dragon Blaze get a lot of positive talk, but I have not had a chance to try them.

Back to non-imports, the Taito arcade compilations are really good.

I know people have already named most, or all, of these games. In those cases, consider these +1 votes.

Yes-Shienryu is really satisfying and also appeared on PSx as Gekioh Shooting King
and yes the sequel utterly sucks.
