Im looking for an old shmup...

Post by casaito »

Hi,

Sorry for the next english mistakes....
Im looking for an old shmup from my childhood.
It was an arcade game from the 80s till 1991. Others titles which I used to play at that time was Chelnov and Toki.
The shooter was an horizontal one. The game had several stages with a boss in each one. I believe it was from Japan.
The ship coud turn to a robot and vice versa with a button press. During the transformation, there was a shield around the ship/robot which could damage enemies.
As far I remember, one stage was on the space (third one :?: ). The boss was a bunch of "blocks". Each one flew following a semi-random pattern around the screen and had an specific weak spot, one at left side, other at the right side and so on.
The background of other stage (last one :?:) was a yellow sky with trees on the ground. There was some kind of vertical mechanical-barriers which appeared as the screen scrolling.

I dont remember nothing more though . Some of the info above could be innacurate as well .
If someone knows the title name please answer this humble request.

Thank you.

It sounds like HEAVY UNIT, but the transformation giving you a shield doesn't really fit.

Here's a clip of one of the home ports as it's near impossible to find any arcade version videos of it:

It's emulation in MAME is very poor so far.

Thank you for your replies guys,

I checked the games and the links you posted but they dont match my memories :( damaged by years of whisky consumption .
The game Im looking for had graphics more similar to a 16 bits than a 8 bits game.
Im still searching at MAME database but no match so far  .

I searched Yahoo on "horizontal shooter ship transform robot shield" (without the quotes). Two other possible candidates not already mentioned are:

Arrow Flash (Telenet/Renovation), although that's console only, not arcade
Finalizer - Super Transformation (Konami)

Arrow Flash?

If you use one of your stocks in robot form, it forms a temporary shield that makes you invincible. The game also has a regular shield to pick up.

I know some hints you posted don't really match up with the following game, but I still recommend to check out Hyper Duel, just because it's a great game.

There was some kind of vertical mechanical-barriers which appeared as the screen scrolling.
Horizontal too...hmm....many aspects you describe sound like its Rabio Lepus

If you believe, Rabio Lepus is both ship and robot, so whenever you press a button, you make the wish and it becomes more true one way than another.

This is the secret of OCHOTONIDAE.

OMG man  :!: :!: :!: THATS THE GAME I WAS LOOKING FOR :!: :!: :!: :D
Im watching Nicovideo right now and no doubt about it. I owe you one, Arcadia.
Searching the net, the english name is SKY ROBO, but it cannot be emulated by MAME so far  , but at least I know the name.
Thanks again everyone who read this post, specially those who replied and, of course, Arcadia.

Hey now that the thread maker found his reply maybe someone can have a crack at mine, though it is a lot more obscure.

This is a title I saw briefly in a local arcade somewhere around the early 90's.

It was running the demo loop and in it there was a level under level where the character, a space ship I believe, but might have been a platforming guy, was shooting at a giant blue fishlike boss. I remember thinking that the graphics looked amazing at the time, so I want to track it down to see how naive my early 90's eye really were.

It was a horizontal shooter. That is all I got.

Darius? The very first boss, King Fossil, is a big blue fish.

Thanks for the suggestion but looking at the video of the boss that is not it. The graphics for the game was much better, it was over all a very sleek looking game, and I was impressed by it in the early to mid 90's. Darius's graphics are too primitive to be it, I think the game was a later generation arcade title. Also the fish I am thinking of was of a different shape, I seem to remember it being more triangular than elongated. Also, this might be corrupted memory, but maybe there was no character on the screen at all during the demo loop. I do remember the big fish clearly though, and I think it turned backwards during its swimming cycle.
